Abstract: Current competitive environments necessitate that firms pursue electronic integration in parallel to agility. However, most research to date has examined integration and agility relatively independently and has overlooked the relationship between them. Using coordination theory, this paper suggests that integration enables the two capabilities of agility (i.e., sensing and responding). Results from a study of 303 business unit operations of manufacturing organizations show that integration within business units and with outside partners is positively associated with process coupling of the value chain, both internally and externally. Further, both types of integration are positively associated with knowledge flow within and outside the business unit. In turn, both lead to higher capability to sense change in the business environment and respond to it with agility. This research helps us understand the integration-agility relation better by investigating the role of the knowledge and process capabilities. Collapse

Abstract: This paper examines the impact of the integration of IT systems with other organizations (IT integration) on the knowledge absorption and desorption of the focal firm. We ran an empirical study in Spain and found that IT integration enables the firm to absorb and desorb knowledge with other organizations, which in turn improves firm performance. This research provides two key contributions to the IS discipline: 1) We introduce the concept of desorptive capacity in the IS research and provide a scale for its measure, 2) we provide a theory of IT in­ tegration impact on the firm’s knowledge absorption and desorption. Abstract: Permissioned blockchain utilized by any organization is commonly known as Enterprise Blockchain (EBC). EBC represents a popular investment option as enterprise system in the service industry. This paper aims at analyzing the perception of EBC among practitioners in service industry. As significant hype prevails about EBC usefulness in service industry, we examine if the perception of the usefulness of EBC among practitioners is borne out of knowledge of theoretical benefits of EBC, or is it borne out of the hype. A scale for measuring EBC benefits is developed. In order to test the hypothesized relationships, structural equation modelling (SEM) is used. We extend the concept of perceived usefulness from technology acceptance model for service supply chain management (SCM) and measure the perceived usefulness of EBC for six supply chain dimensions in the service industry. We examine if the service industry managers perceive EBC to be profitable based on the practical usefulness of EBC in various dimensions of service SCM. Moderating effects of 5 factors are analysed on relationships of our research model. This paper provides insights about the dimensions of service SCM, in which service industry practitioners perceive EBC to be useful and may contribute to increment in organization’s profitability. Abstract: Since 2010, US police departments have widely adopted Body-worn cameras (BWC), most research on BWCs has focused on the impacts of BWCs on stakeholders’ perceptions and behavioral changes. Less explored, however, is the impact of BWCs upon policing routines which affect performances of police departments. To address this research gap, we identify BWCs’ affordances as its technological capabilities and examine how the affordances reconfigure routines in police organizations and how the reconfigured routines affect performances of US police departments. In practice, our study contributes to the IS academy by providing general insight on the affordances of wearable technology on organizations with the cases of BWC implementation in U.S. police departments. In theory, our study quantitatively confirms the validity of qualitative research on affordance theory, which claims that technological affordance is important in reconfiguring organizational routines that affect organizational performance. Abstract: Electronic Health Record (EHR) has the potential to transform the work required to create and deliver healthcare services. This has triggered large-scale adoption across hospitals. However, whether all hospitals obtain a similar effect from their EHR implementations remains an important question because there are significant differences differences in characteristics of hospitals adopting these systems. To examine differences in effects across hos­ pitals, we examine whether the impacts of EHR applications are contingent on work domains, by assessing performance effects across hospitals with varying administrative scale and clinical complexity. Because EHRs constitute a suite of applications with different functionalities, examining the effects of different sets of appli­ cations is challenging due to nonlinear interdependencies between applications. Therefore, we use an archetype approach, identifying synergistic EHR (EHRSYN) archetype as an ideal portfolio—a conceptual anchor for a hospital’s EHR portfolio. We test contingencies by combining this technology archetype with the work domains—administrative scale and clinical complexity. We test our hypotheses using empirical data from 137 hospitals in California, hypothesizing the differences in effects of EHRs on financial, operational, and clinical performances across hospitals with different administrative scales (size) and clinical complexities (case-mix) of work. While hospitals gain the most by implementing a portfolio close to the EHRSYN archetype, our nuanced models reveal that the benefits of such portfolios increase for large hospitals and are greater for hospitals treating less complex cases. These findings underscore how variations in applications used and work domains demarcate boundaries related to the performance effects of EHRs. Abstract: This study contributes to the extant literature on information management by investigating the interrelationships between information systems (IS)-related capabilities and their effects on firm performance. Using the resource-based view (RBV), a set of hypotheses is formulated to examine these links, considering the role that may be played by decision-making performance and business-process performance as mediating variables. Structural equation modeling (SEM) has been applied to a sample of 204 firms in Turkey. The test results obtained confirm the proposed serially mediating model according to which decision-making performance and business-process performance play a critical mediating role in the human resource and administrative-related IS capabilities, and firm-performance relationships. No support, however, has been found concerning the serial mediation effect between infrastructure-related IS capabilities and firm performance. Collapse

Abstract: While IT integration is recognised as an important capability, the mechanisms through which it creates value and the contingencies that delimit its effectiveness are unclear – particularly, in the case of firms that deliver solutions embodying both products and services. We focus on IT vendors to investigate the effectiveness of IT integration capability with respect to three aspects of IT solution offerings: breadth, modularity and customisation. We find a complementarity effect between IT integration capability and management of the IT offer strategy: IT integration is fundamental regardless of whether the firm relies on customisation or a broad set of heterogeneous knowledge bases. However, when IT vendors adopt a modular design strategy, IT integration is made redundant and can be counterproductive. Collapse

Abstract: The use of information technologies (IT) in a supply chain has been recognized as essential for both organizational exploration and exploitation activities. Drawing upon organizational theories, we submit that a punctuated equilibrium approach is most viable in the context of supplier IT use for generating buyer benefits in a supply chain network. Through the analysis of matched-pair data collected from a major North American electronic components distributor and its key suppliers, we find that the supplier’s IT exploitation has direct influence on IT exploration, which in turn directly contributes to the buyer’s operational and strategic benefits (and fully mediates the effect of IT exploitation). This study enriches both the IS and supply chain management literature by providing empirical findings that uncover the mechanisms through which collaborative supply chain IT use would influence value creation for trading partners. Abstract: Although mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are a common strategy to reduce costs and pursue growth, the variance in returns from M&A is very high. This research examines how information technology (IT) infrastructure flexibility affects M&A. We use a combination of secondary as well as matched-pair survey data from 100 mid-size firms in Spain to investigate this relationship. The empirical analysis suggests that IT infrastructure flexibility affects M&A through two key pathways: (1) a flexible IT infrastructure facilitates the development of business flexibility that provides the responsiveness to seize M&A opportunities and make acquisitions, and (2) a flexible IT infrastructure facilitates the development of post-M&A IT integration capability that provides the control to integrate the IT and business resources of the acquired firm and realize the economic benefits from M&A. Abstract: Drawing on the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework and prior IT assimilation literature, we develop and test an integrated model of ERP assimilation and value in Chinese firms. We also contrast the strength of the antecedents of ERP assimilation and value across different ownership types. Our empirical results using a survey data showed that relative advantage, complexity, compatibility, top management support, organization fit, financial commitment and competitive pressure are significant predictors for ERP assimilation. We also found that the linkage from ERP assimilation to ERP value is very significant. In addition, the strength of the antecedents of ERP assimilation and value varies dramatically across different firm ownership types. Our study confirms that traditional diffusion of innovation attributes, top management support and competitive pressure are significant during the whole ERP life cycle. Our findings also emphasize and validate the importance of ERP assimilation in improving firm performance, and provide evidence for the continued debate on ERP payoff and information technology productivity paradox. In sum, these findings provide insights into how ERP assimilation and ERP value are influenced by contextual elements, and how the impacts may vary across different ownership types. Collapse
