Abstract: Algorithmic control (AC) refers to organizations’ use of increasingly intelligent algorithms and related digital technology to steer worker behavior. While previous studies have identified and conceptualized various forms of AC in both platform and traditional work contexts, the presented conceptualizations lack measurability. This key shortcoming hampers further empirical research on the current use of AC and its manifold consequences. In this study, we report on the item development process for a scale for measuring perceived AC from a workers’ perspective. Following well-established approaches, an initial item pool was developed. The items were discussed and refined with the support of five academic experts and three AC workers. A subsequent rating study with 98 workers was conducted to ensure the content validity of all items. On this basis, the study at hand presents a comprehensive set of items for both AC in general and its seven sub-dimensions. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations today leverage big data analytics combined with modern information and communication technology (ICT) to control workers in a largely automated manner. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as algorithmic control (AC). Research has shown that worker perceptions of AC applications can impact critical outcomes such as worker resistance, continuance intention, and well-being. Despite recent efforts to better understand these worker-level effects of AC, no systematic measures of workers' perceptions of AC exist to date. In this study, we develop and present a scale to empirically measure AC at the worker level. In particular, following established scale development guidelines, we conceptualize AC in terms of seven distinct forms, and derive, evaluate, and validate a final set of 33 measurement items. In doing so, our study paves the way for a much-needed, more systematic investigation of AC and its worker-level implications. Collapse

Abstract: In order to ensure energy affordability, we propose a design-oriented behavioral research study with the aim of helping low-income tenants to develop an efficient energy behavior by increasing their energy self-efficacy. We propose to compare different digital interventions in field tests to understand, in an unfiltered way, what helps low-income tenants to be able to reduce their energy costs. We thereby contribute towards understanding how the vulnerable group of low-income tenants with their limitations and needs regarding their energy consumption behavior can be effectively supported digitally. Abstract: Adversities are inherent in the information system development (ISD) process and often put projects to a halt. However, it is unclear what capabilities the team needs to resist and bounce back from adverse events. The purpose of this study is to propose that team resilience capability (TRC), containing affective, cognitive, and behavioral factors is vital for effective project performance. Further, by adopting the conservation of resource perspective, we theorize that intellectual capital, including human capital, technology capital, and political capital fosters TRC. Survey data collected from 149 ISD project teams confirmed our ideas that TRC is strongly tied with project performance and is more affected by human capital, followed by political capital and tech­ nology capital. Abstract: This study examines how an individual cognitively generates creative ideas using mobile collaboration platforms (MCPs). Applying the cognitive creativity perspective and the knowledge of the idiosyncratic capabilities of MCPs, the study proposes a research model that explains MCP-driven creative idea generation mechanisms. The model is validated using a field study where individuals were involved in a group collaboration setting for a cognitively challenging task. The results indicate that the use of an MCP positively supports an individual’s creative idea generation process through cognitive warming-up processes (spontaneity effect) and behavioral autonomy (freedom effect). Abstract: When unexpected events occur, IT project teams need to react appropriately in order to limit the potentially negative, and sometimes disastrous consequences of such events. Yet, while past research has identified unexpected events as being an important aspect to consider when managing projects, the existing literature does not provide a clear conceptualization of this concept which limits the development of new theories and thus the ability to guide practitioners. Based on a literature review and to advance our understanding of unexpected events in IT projects and their effective management, and facilitate future theoretical developments on IT project management, the present paper develops a conceptualization that clearly distinguishes this concept from other closely related ones, as well as proposing a research framework that links it to IT project team responses and their consequences. Abstract: We propose a research agenda on digital innovation units (DIUs) that refines the current -mainly descriptive-body of knowledge. Receiving great attention in practice, DIUs are dedicated organizational units that support and partly drive digital transformation in incumbent firms by leveraging new structures and practices that differ from those existing in the organization, aiming to promote various aspects of digital innovation. Utilizing DIU knowledge from a theoretical literature review, the resulting research agenda assists in structuring the field by synthesizing and connecting the partly isolated knowledge chunks. We illustrate a coherent picture of theorizing DIUs using Whetten's building blocks of theory. Researchers can draw on our findings to understand the emerging phenomenon of DIUs and use them as a stencil for future DIU research. It simultaneously may guide practitioners to understand the nature of DIUs and their role in a firm's digital transformation journey. Collapse

Abstract: To improve organisational safety and enhance security efficiency, organisations seek to establish a culture of security that provides a foundation for how employees should approach security. There are several frameworks and models that provide a set of requirements for forming security cultures; however, for many organisations, the requirements of the frameworks are difficult to meet, if not impossible. In this research, we take a different perspective and focus on the core underlying competencies that high-reliability organisations (HROs) have shown to be effective in achieving levels of risk tolerance consistent with the goals of a security culture. In doing so we draw on high-reliability theory to develop a Security Culture Model that explains how a firm's supportive and practical competencies form its organisational security culture. To refine and test the model, we conducted a developmental mixed-method study using interviews and survey data with professional managers involved in the information security (InfoSec) programs within their respective HROs. Our findings emphasise the importance of an organisation's supportive and practical competencies for developing a culture of security. Our results suggest that organisations' security cultures are a product of their InfoSec practices and that organisational mindfulness, top management involvement and organisational structure are key to the development of those practices. Abstract: This work proposed an integrated model incorporating review quality and quantity to explore the extent to which consumers adopt electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM) information. A linear structural equation model was employed to analyze 435 valid responses and test it against the hypotheses. The empirical results suggest that in terms of e-WOM the influence of review quantity outweighs that of the review quality. Review consistency negatively correlates with informational influence. Consumers are alert to highly consistent reviews and may easily doubt ones that contain similar content. Furthermore, the relationship between perceived persuasiveness and social influence will not be inhibited by confirmation bias. Collapse

Abstract: In the data economy, data has become an essential strategic resource for gaining a competitive advantage. Data spaces represent a relatively new phenomenon aimed at encouraging businesses to fully leverage the potential of data. Despite various approaches for definitions there remains a lack of clarity surrounding the conceptualization of data space, its perceived value, and the factors that drive its adoption. The conceptual ambiguity and synonymous usage of the term in academic and business literature present significant obstacles to targeted conceptualization and use. This paper addresses these issues by proposing primary properties of data space and contributes to the field by applying a semantic decomposition. Through this approach, we identified data space as having the following conceptual aspects Nature, Element, Function, Utility and Governance. These primitives highlight the growing need for security and privacy when sharing interorganizational data. In addition, we offer an initial definition of data spaces. Collapse
