Abstract: Patients lie to their doctors for a variety of reasons such as judgement, embarrassment, and financial concerns. These reasons are different from consumer contexts where information disclosure risks include the loss of data to unknown third parties. Yet, the same theories are commonly used to frame both settings. This overextension of theory leads to important differences in the results of these studies. We propose that additional theorizing is needed to reconceptualize privacy calculus to more accurately explain healthcare patient disclosure. Using a hybrid methodology based on both a grounded theory approach and construal level theory, this study explores the perceived risks and benefits of health data and consumer data disclosure. The results reveal significant differences in psychological distance and construal levels between the two contexts which can improve future theorizing. This deeper understanding could help improve the accuracy of patient disclosure and reduce harm in clinical systems. Collapse

Abstract: Online reviews are a crucial aspect of businesses' success. Thus, businesses encourage reviewers to write reviews offering concrete helpful information but such reviews are scarce. This study attempts to move beyond the traditional approaches to understanding reviewers' behavior and uses a novel lens of 'human construal'. By drawing on Construal Level Theory (CLT) we tend to understand reviewers' and readers' perceptions and utilize that for the maximization of review concreteness. Review concreteness is a semantic characteristic of a review and is considered an important aspect of reviews' perceived quality. We examine if reviewers' and readers' construal can be utilized to manipulate some factors of website design in a way that it drives reviewers to write and readers to perceive more concrete reviews and consequently enhance the overall concreteness of reviews. The study amalgamates literature from psychology, marketing, and information systems and has significant potential to benefit both businesses and consumers. Collapse

Abstract: Free sample strategy has attracted considerable interest among practitioners and academics, it has been widely adopted in digital content industries (e.g., e-books, music, and videos). There are two issues that have been the continuous concerning and constantly optimized focus. How many free samples should be taken? How to design a personalized free samples strategy considering the contexts? To better understand these issues, we collaborated with an online reading platform in China to design and conduct a field experiment based on Construal Level Theory (CLT). The results showed an inverted U-shaped relationship between free sample quantity and consumer purchase decisions and also suggested when free chapters were offered, book popularity and quality were also found to positively moderate consumers' purchase decisions. Moreover, by combining the causal forest (CF) technique and the double/debiased machine learning model (DML), we develop a personalized free sample strategy and provide managerial implications. Abstract: Organisations implement a variety of knowledge mechanisms such as information security education, training and awareness (SETA) programs and information security policies, to influence employees' secure behaviour. Despite increased efforts to provide information systems (IS) security knowledge to employees, data breaches and other security incidents resulting from insider behaviour continue. Recent IS security research, primarily grounded on assumptions of employees' rational assessment of numerous factors, has yielded inconsistent results. Challenging this paradigm, we model secure behaviour on security knowledge mechanisms, which focuses on the multidimensional nature of security knowledge breadth, depth and finesse to represent the full array of managerial levers. We further draw on construal level theory to conceptualise users' perceptual judgements of security messages. Two studies support our model, with the second building on the first. Study 1, an experiment with 312 participants, focused on validating the treatments. Study 2, a survey with 219 participants, validated the entire model. Results showed that our model has significantly more explanatory and predictive power than the orthodox paradigm. Our results have practical implications for optimising the organisation of knowledge mechanisms by emphasising the personal relevance of threats and defining the factors that lead to secure behaviour. We also contribute to the discourse on information security research and provide a template for integrating theories, thus opening new avenues for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Mobile devices have become increasingly prevalent in the context of consumers’ offline search and shopping behavior by acting as personal decision support tools. This paper investigates the relationship between con sumers’ real-time location and their search behavior when shopping offline. We develop two location-specific measures based on mobile device usage to analyze the association between a consumer’s real-time location and their search behavior: Present store distance and present store density. We apply these measures to a unique dataset from a leading mobile product information app that includes >13 million search sessions from 2.5 million consumers searching for 1.8 million different products. Our findings show that store distance and store density significantly influence consumers’ mobile search behavior: detailed searches for product-specific attributes (search depth) increase as store distance decreases and store density increases, while the number of jointly searched products within the same category (search breadth) increases as store distance and density increase. We also find that durable products weaken the main effects of store distance and density on search depth but strengthen it for search breadth. These results provide insights for offline retailers to better understand locationspecific consumer demands and improve their mobile in-app targeting and product assortment decisions. Collapse

Abstract: Design thinking (DT) as an innovation method has gained increasing importance in recent years, both for traditional and digital products. However, the rapid acceleration of digitalization across all domains of the modern working world has changed the way innovation management and DT are conducted. As a result, highly interactive offline workshops have been replaced by remote online workshops, which are supported by digital tools. This radical shift warrants a reconsideration of the potentially sociopsychological dynamics within DT workshops. To address this, we conducted 16 qualitative in-depth interviews with DT experts from different backgrounds and contextualized our interview findings with construal level theory and embodied cognition. Thus, we show how the DT process is affected by the changing socio-psychological dynamics created by the shift to digital environments. In sum, we identify both chances and challenges of DT in digital environments and derive implications for future research and practice in this area. Collapse

Abstract: Drawing on construal level theory, prior literature has found a positivity bias in online ratings when consumers evaluate an experience from a psychological distance, whether spatial or temporal. Selfdistancing theory posits that psychological distance enables individuals to reflect on psychologically distant negative experiences more genuinely, in a less biased way. This raises the question of whether the positivity bias in ratings due to psychological distance persists for negative experiences. To address this question, we collected data from a large review platform that enables the identification of reviewers' spatial and temporal distance. The negativity of an experience was operationalized via review text sentiment. We introduced spatial and temporal distance as moderators between sentiment negativity and ratings and found a negative moderation by spatial distance and a positive moderation by temporal distance. Our findings indicate that the relationship between sentiment negativity and rating grows stronger under spatial distance and gets weaker under temporal distance. Text mining confirmed selfdistancing as the driver behind the spatial moderation and construal levels as the driver behind the temporal moderation. We attribute the asymmetric moderations to differences in the tangibility of spatial distance (more tangible) and temporal distance (less tangible). These results improve our understanding of reviewing behavior and can help platforms de-bias ratings. Collapse

Abstract: When a problem leaves decision makers uncertain as to how to approach it, observing others’ decisions can improve one’s own decisions by promoting more accurate judgments and a better insight into the problem. However, observing others’ decisions may also activate motives that prevent this potential from being realized, for instance, ego concerns that prompt excessive risk taking. Our experimental study investigates how two features of the social environment influence the effect of observing others’ decisions on individual risk taking and performance. We manipulated (1) the psychological distance to others whose decisions could be observed (and thereby the tendency to seek self-enhancing social comparison) and (2) the opportunity for interaction (and thereby for a cumulative effect of any such tendency on decisions over time and for an effect on social information itself). Because the two features covary in real-world settings, we designed two treatments corresponding to the two natural combinations. Both treatments provided participants with two other participants’ period decisions in a multiperiod problem under uncertainty. No new objective information about the problem could be inferred from these decisions. We predicted that participants who observed the decisions of distant others (who had solved the same problem earlier) would perform better than participants in a control sample without any information about others’ decisions and that participants who observed the decisions of proximal others (with whom interaction could arise) would take more risk and perform worse than those who observed distant others’ decisions. The data corroborate our predictions. Abstract: As accountability becomes increasingly important for developers of artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems, governance mechanisms such as AI principles or audits are often criticized for not sufficiently influencing AI developers. Therefore, we examine how visualized arguments in user interfaces (UIs) of integrated development environments (IDEs) can increase AI developers' perceived accountability. Combining construal level theory and Toulmin's model of argumentation, four UI design artifacts were developed, each containing a claim of process or outcome accountability with or without monitoring and evaluation tools that act as claim-supporting data. Results of an online experiment with 164 AI developers show that claiming process accountability increases AI developers' perceived accountability more than claiming outcome accountability, both without supporting data. However, when supporting data are available, both claims increase AI developers' perceived accountability comparably effectively. The study's results highlight the theoretical and practical usefulness of visualized arguments in UIs of IDEs to promote AI developers' accountability. Collapse
