Abstract: Despite the dynamic nature of knowledge-related activities and the availability of a variety of communication technologies, many global teams habitually use technology in the same way across activities. However, as teams move through cycles of accumulating, integrating, and implementing knowledge, the purposes for communication technologies change. Current theorizing and empirical work on team knowledge management has yet to develop a dynamic theory that incorporates these changes. By conducting a multiwave, mixed method analysis of 48 global teams, we develop a theory of how global teams sustain effectiveness through technology affordance processes. We found that effective teams are those that recognize cues indicating change is necessary and coevolve a symbiosis between new activities, new purposes for interaction, and new uses of communication technologies. This coevolution of purpose with technology use forms new affordances, which enable the team to move on to new knowledge management activities and sustain effectiveness. Our theory more realistically models the dynamics of staying connected while sharing, combining, and implementing knowledge across the globe. Collapse

Abstract: Organization-sponsored sharing platforms represent the sharing economy ideal because they facilitate the peer-to-peer exchange of goods and services among members of an established community. By embedding sharing within an organization, this platform configuration infuses collaborative consumption with the moral dimension of shared values and concerns. However, the conflicting institutional logics inherent in community-based sharing create paradoxical tensions that are likely to destabilize this new organizational form. Therefore, to understand when an organization-sponsored sharing platform is viable, we conducted an empirical investigation of the Zimride by Enterprise® ridesharing platform for universities and corporations. Using qualitative and quantitative data from 25 organizations that sponsored Zimride's ridesharing service, we found that this new organizational form is characterized by contradictions due to the market, hierarchy, and community logics of its multilevel B2B2P2P service delivery model. However, the mere presence of such paradoxical tensions did not render this sharing economy ideal infeasible. We therefore discuss when the Zimride platform was viable and how site coordinators at sponsoring organizations managed, in particular, the tension between their organizational members' need for a heterogeneous supply of transportation options and a strong collective identity to motivate their collaborative consumption. Abstract: As the highest level of cloud computing delivery model, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) has gained considerable popularity in the industry as a new way of deploying IT solutions, due to its low cost and high elasticity. However, the new business model associated with SaaS highlights the importance for SaaS vendors to understand how to retain customers in a hyper-competitive market. In particular, increasing customer retention and preventing customers from replacing the adopted SaaS applications has become a crucial task for all SaaS vendors. In this study, using a mixed-methods approach, and drawing on the cognitive–affective–conative– action (CACA) framework, we investigate the IS replacement phenomenon in the context of SaaS-delivered applications. Our qualitative study allows us to develop an IS-centric view of customer commitment by differentiating between organizations’ commitment to the SaaS application and to the cloud computing technology in general, while the subsequent quantitative study validates the difference between the two types of commitment and helps understand how they together influence organizations’ intentions to replace a SaaS application. Our results generate important theoretical implications for research on IS replacement and clarifies the concept of customer commitment. We also offer practical guidelines to SaaS vendors on how to retain customers so as to survive/thrive in this competitive market. Collapse

Abstract: Opportunities to collect real-time social media data during a crisis remain limited to location and keyword filtering despite the sparsity of geographic metadata and the tendency of keyword-based methods to capture information posted by remote rather than local users. Here we introduce a third, network filtering method that uses social network ties to infer the location of social media users in a geographic community and collect data from networks of these users during a crisis. In this paper we compare all three methods by analysing the distribution of situational reports of infrastructure damage and service disruption across location, keyword, and network-filtered social media data during a weather emergency. We find that network filtering doubles the number of situational reports collected in real-time compared to location and keyword filtering alone, but that all three methods collect unique reports that can support situational awareness of incidents occurring across a community. Abstract: We examine factors leading to intention-behaviour misalignment during the current website visit for two groups of website visitors: (1) “directed buyers” who visit with an a priori intention to purchase on the current visit but end up not doing so, and (2) “search/deliberators” who visit with an a priori intention to only gather information for a specific future purchase but end up making a purchase during the current visit. A qualitative study analysed responses by 2660 visitors to the websites of a large hotel management company, 749 of whom acted against their a priori purchase intentions. Based on the results, we propose a theoretical model of factors influencing the intention-behaviour relationship, emphasising those factors that have received little attention in extant research and that have noticeably different impacts for each group, in either facilitating or inhibiting purchasing behaviour. We further explore the interrelationships between various types of uncertainty, anticipated action and inaction regret, and disconfirmed expectations in distorting the intention-behaviour relationship. Abstract: This paper addresses the question of employees’ information protection behaviour from a sociotechnical perspective. While prior information systems (IS) security research thoroughly examines the determinants of employees’ security motivation, this work investigates if information protection motivation translates into actual behaviour and how security policy-enforcing technological agents influence behaviour. For researchers this is important as measurements of actual security behaviour are scarce in the literature, the underlying cognitive process of information protection behaviour lacks detailed examination, and the design of information technology (IT) artefacts requires an understanding of what makes them effective in changing an employee’s information protection behaviour. In a scenario-based field experiment with 82 participants we test for direct and moderation effects of policy-enforcing technological agents on employees’ information protection behaviour. Captured screen recordings of the simulated work environment are analysed with principles of inductive reasoning to suggest a cognitive process model of users’ information protection behaviour. Shedding light into the black box of the post-motivational phase helps us to investigate when employees are specifically challenged to protect confidential information and how a policy-enforcing technological agent might help to prevent information leakage incidents. Abstract: The present article is a multi-method work in progress about the post-adoption phase of information systems, and more specifically, it investigates the usage continuance of Social Networking Sites (SNS). We use the theoretical framework of Gift Theory applied within the context of SNS. We define the concept of computer-mediated social tie (CMST). In our work we use both qualitative and quantitative data and methods. From our qualitative data we found that CMST explains SNS usage continuance. Using these qualitative data we developed scales for this new construct. We are currently collecting quantitative data in order to verify our qualitative findings. We expect results to confirm the linkage between CMST and usage continuance. Collapse

Abstract: Attribution theory, advanced by Bernard Weiner and his colleagues is an important, though sometimes controversial, theory that has demonstrated vitality and longevity. The cross-disciplinary application of attribution theory to, for example, organizational behavior, marketing, and education, has stimulated the interests of researchers and contributed to its theoretical validity and reliability. Compared to other disciplines, the application and theoretical testing of attribution theory are in the "spring" of their existence in the field of Information Systems (IS). This paper proposes that conceptualization and measurement of the causal attributions individuals make for their computer performance and performance histories, positive and negative, are critical to understanding computer adoption and post-adoption behaviors. We first identify the causal attributions that enterprise resource planning (ERP) users make for their computer performance histories. We then describe the conceptualization and development of multi-item scales to capture these causal attributions. This work contributes to theory and practice through (1) the development and psychometric testing of several attributional scales for advancing our understanding of the multi-theoretical stream of research investigating technology adoption at the individual level, and (2) by providing a description of a theoretical multi-method approach for the rigorous scale development of causal attributions. Our work suggests that researchers must consider several fundamental principles of attribution theory when investigating IS artifacts during various adoption phases. Collapse
