Abstract: Countries worldwide have employed various digital solutions to contain and cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. In this explorative case research, we examine national-level digital responses to the pandemic in four specific areastracking and tracing, health data reporting, teleconsultation, and vaccination mobilization-across five countries: China, Denmark, Germany, South Korea, and the US. Drawing on the notion of agility and digital infrastructures, our cross-case analysis unveils how the countries' digital responses to the pandemic have been shaped by their national health system characteristics. In addition, we highlight how existing digital health infrastructures, regulatory adaptations, and industry collaborations fostered the alacrity with which nations responded to the pandemic. We define national-level digital agility as the ability of a nation to leverage digital infrastructure capabilities to address urgent societal challenges in a contextually appropriate way. Our key contribution is a model of this complex, but urgently needed concept containing five building blocks, that jointly explain and contribute to building such agility. Despite focusing on addressing the existing challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we believe that researchers and policymakers can also take away from our framework ideas to tackle other socio-environmental challenges. Abstract: News recommender systems (NRSs) are an essential component of online news portals. To avoid the emergence of "filter bubbles" where users display an overly selective perception of the news situation, NRSs must not only display a diverse range of news, but also motivate users to engage with the diversified content. Many existing approaches attempt to achieve this by modifying the recommendation strategy or by applying selection control techniques such as digital nudging. Based on insights from self-determination theory, we present an alternative approach that relies on user control mechanisms to promote selfdetermined motivation for exploratory use and thus diverse news consumption behavior. We also outline a methodological design to empirically confirm the viability of our approach. As such, we not only contribute to the theoretical understanding of the role of user control in diverse news consumption behavior, but also provide guidance on validating the practical feasibility of our approach. Abstract: This paper uses activity theoretic analyses to investigate the role of governments in developing rural e‐commerce ecosystems and the effects of such ecosystems on poverty alleviation. On the basis of a case study of Longnan, one of the poorest regions in China, this paper reports and analyses the various actions taken by local governments in nurturing, supporting, and regulating the development of a local rural e‐commerce ecosystem and using this ecosystem to transform poverty alleviation. Our study articulates a model of poverty alleviation through e‐commerce. By documenting and theorizing the mechanisms underlying rural e‐commerce development and poverty alleviation through e‐commerce as well as governments' role in developing and sustaining them, this paper contributes to establishing a “theory of the solution” to the grand challenge of poverty alleviation both in China and globally. Abstract: The ‘digital divide’ is one of the key concepts related to IT’s role in social inclusion. However, and despite its prominence, the IS literature related to the concept currently provides a rather diverse set of definitions. This results in a fragmented nomological network, which leads to conceptual ambiguity and complicates the integration of respective research results. In this paper, we share our exploration of the digital divide concept in the context of research on age-related digital inclusion. While we find that the concept can inform important research in this domain – from age-related health and care to the employability of silver workers – its conceptual ambiguity leads to a set of research challenges. Problematizing these challenges, we outline a research agenda to rethink the digital divide concept and integrate and expand its conceptualization. This will help to inform research on IT-related social inclusion and exclusion in a digitally transformed society. Collapse
