Abstract: Significant investments in information systems (IS) over the past decades have led to increasingly complex IS architectures in organisations, which are difficult to understand, operate, and maintain. We investigate this development and associated challenges through a conceptual model that distinguishes four constituent elements of IS architecture complexity by differentiating technological from organisational aspects and structural from dynamic aspects. Building on this conceptualisation, we hypothesise relations between these four IS architecture complexity constructs and investigate their impact on architectural outcomes (i.e., efficiency, flexibility, transparency, and predictability). Using survey data from 249 IS managers, we test our model through a partial least squares (PLS) approach to structural equation modelling (SEM). We find that organisational complexity drives technological complexity and that structural complexity drives dynamic complexity. We also demonstrate that increasing IS architecture complexity has a significant negative impact on efficiency, flexibility, transparency, and predictability. Finally, we show that enterprise architecture management (EAM) helps to offset these negative effects by acting as a moderator in the relation between organisational and technological IS architecture complexity. Thus, organisations without adequate EAM are likely to face large increases in technological complexity due to increasing organisational complexity, whereas organisations with adequate EAM exhibit no such relation. Abstract: Innovation through outsourcing' describes a firm's strategy to receive innovation by outsourcing IT or IT-intensive processes to more competent and innovative service providers who, in turn, do not only operate those activities but also improve and innovate for or on behalf of their clients. This strategy has gathered some attention from recent research, though it has mainly examined the client perspective, yet. We contribute to this sub-field of outsourcing research by analyzing vendors' strategies to improve their innovation capability and thus to be more innovative for their clients. Based on a longitudinal dataset of 136 outsourcing vendors, we analyze which innovationenabling initiatives are related to superior firm performance (in terms of revenue growth). We find that particularly employee-involving initiatives are promising: outsourcing vendors that have implemented, e.g., idea/innovation platforms that support employee-driven innovation, receive above-average revenue growth. Abstract: We draw on the attention-based view of the firm to examine whether and when the presence of a CIO in the TMT has a positive effect on both firms' ideated digital innovation (IDI) (i.e., the intensity of firms' digital patenting activity) and commercialized digital innovation (CDI) (i.e., the digital sophistication of firms' new products). Building on the idea that attention processes are context dependent, we also explore the moderating roles of CEO characteristics (IT background and role tenure) as well as environmental characteristics (the industry's IT attention). We analyze data from a cross-industry panel of U.S. S&P 500 firms over eight years that includes up to 2,852 firm-year observations. The results indicate that CIO presence in the TMT is positively related to a firm's IDI and CDI. Furthermore, they show that the organizational context related to CEO characteristics moderates the CIO-CDI relationship and that the environmental context related to the industry's IT attention moderates the CIO-IDI relationship. Our research contributes to the information systems literature by providing robust evidence that CIO presence in the TMT positively influences a firm's digital innovation outcomes, showing how internal and external boundary conditions affect the work of CIOs, and elaborating the role of managerial attention as an underlying mechanism explaining digital innovation. Abstract: This paper examines how firms have transformed and executed IT-enabled remote work initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic. After examining archival data on a sample of 100 firms in Spain, we discover three types of IT-enabled remote work firm’s strategies: leader, agile, and survival. Leader companies have a competitive advantage over agile companies, which in turn have a competitive advantage over survival organizations. We find that firm size was crucial to executing remote work firm’s initiatives as a leader or survival. The industry significantly affected the implementation of remote work firm’s initiatives during the three pivotal periods in the telecommunications industry. Collapse

Abstract: With the emergence of the Industrial Internet of Things, a growing number of manufacturing firms has started to adopt non-ownership business models (NOBMs). NOBM providers maintain ownership of offered machinery and sell only the machine use and/or performance as a service to their clients. While the adoption of NOBMs is found to be associated with novel business opportunities related to client-side uncertainties, it is also found to result in a considerable increase in provider-side uncertainties. Drawing on a multiple-case study with three leading manufacturers, we find notable differences in terms of NOBM designs, ranging from a primary focus on exploiting client-side uncertainties to a primary focus on mitigating provider-side uncertainties. Moreover, our study uncovers four context factors that help explain key differences in NOBM designs. In particular, we identify two machine attributes (human dependency and energy efficiency) and two market attributes (average client size and antitrust regulations) that “push” providers toward either uncertainty-exploiting or uncertainty-mitigating NOBM designs. Abstract: Organizations tout the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship. Yet, when hiring it remains unclear how they evaluate entrepreneurial human capital—namely, job candidates with founder experience. How hiring firms evaluate this experience—and especially how this evaluation varies by entrepreneurial success and failure—reveals insights into the structures and processes within organizations. Organizations research points to two perspectives related to the evaluation of founder experience: Former founders may be advantaged, due to founder experience signaling high-quality capabilities and human capital, or disadvantaged, due to concerns related to fit and commitment. To identify the dominant class of mechanisms driving the evaluation of founder experience, it is important to consider how these evaluations differ, depending on whether the founder’s venture failed or succeeded. To isolate demand-side mechanisms and hold supply-side factors constant, we conducted a field experiment. We sent applications varying the candidate’s founder experience to 2,400 software engineering positions in the United States at random. We find that former founders received 43% fewer callbacks than nonfounders and that this difference is driven by older hiring firms. Further, this founder penalty is greatest for former successful founders, who received 33% fewer callbacks than former failed founders. Our results highlight that mechanisms related to concerns about fit and commitment, rather than information asymmetry about quality, are most influential when hiring firms evaluate former founders in our context. Abstract: There has been a shift in the business world where many companies now consider their responsibilities to diverse stakeholders (such as employees, customers, suppliers, communities, and the environment) on par with that of shareholders. This trend bolsters expectations for companies to report on their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), i.e., on their environmentally and socially oriented claims and commitments. The IT industry (software and hardware) faces conflicting motivations to engage in CSR, and it is not clear how it fares compared to other industries. In this research project, we plan to leverage stakeholder theory to better understand how companies from this industry balance pressures from a dominant stakeholder (i.e., the employees, who have legitimacy and power) versus a dependent stakeholder (i.e., the environment, who has legitimacy and urgency). Abstract: Although achieving strategic distinctiveness is critical for firms in dynamic industries, where the competitive landscape and market conditions frequently change, there is a paucity of research on the impact of information technology (IT) on a firm's strategic conformity (or distinctiveness). Motivated by the importance of strategic conformity and emergence of novel technologies, we draw on institutional theory and hypothesize that IT Novelty positively impacts strategic conformity. Second, drawing on resource-based view, we hypothesize that market dynamism and competitive dynamism negatively moderate the effect of IT Novelty on strategic conformity. Third, we hypothesize that the moderating impact is stronger for market dynamism than competitive dynamism. We find support for our hypotheses using a fifteen-year dataset from over 300 U.S. manufacturing firms. Our study contributes to theory and managerial practice by combining institutional and resource-based view perspectives to examine how IT Novelty shapes a firm's strategic conformity, particularly in dynamic industry conditions. Abstract: Despite the merits of business model (BM) digitalization to sustain organizational competitive advantages, many firms are cautious to digitalize their BMs due to the efforts needed and the high risks accompanying them. To date, the existing understanding of the antecedents of BM digitalization is still underdeveloped. We draw on the behavioral theory of the firm to develop a comprehensive understanding of what motivates firms to promote BM digitalization. In so doing, this study explores how (in)consistency between historical and social performance feedback affects BM digitalization. Moreover, we theorize that board experience with BM digitalization from interlock firms is an important contingency that influences these relationships. Based on panel data from 2,373 Chinese-listed firms from 2008 to 2019, the results provide general support for our arguments. This study contributes to the BM digitalization literature by disentangling the critical roles of (in)consistent performance feedback and board experience. Collapse

Abstract: Strategic conversations involve one party with an informational advantage and the other with an interest in the information. This paper proposes machinelearning based measures to quantify the degrees of evasiveness and incoherence of the informed party during real-time strategic conversations. The specific empirical context is the questions and answers (Q&A) part of earnings conference calls during which managers endure high pressure as they face analysts' scrutinizing questions. Being reluctant to disclose adverse information, managers may resort to evasive answers and sometimes respond less coherently due to increased cognitive load. Using data from the earnings calls of the S&P 500 companies from 2006 to 2018, we show that the proposed measures predict worse nextquarter earnings. Moreover, the stock market perceives incoherence as a negative signal. This paper contributes methodologically by developing two novel machinepowered measures to automatically evaluate behavioral cues during real-time strategic conversations. The proposed analytical tools are particularly beneficial to resource-constrained and informationally disadvantaged parties such as retail investors who may not be able to effectively trade on signals buried deep in unstructured conversational data.
