Abstract: The role of artificial intelligence in daily life is constantly advancing and has become an important topic of discussion. With music and its lyrics being a vehicle to express topics of society, this paper investigates how artificial intelligence is perceived by musicians and reflected in their songs. By analyzing the lyrics of over 1,200 songs over three decades, this work applies sentiment analysis to extract polarities and emotions. The results provide insights into how musicians view and reflect the impact of artificial intelligence on society and how this is reflected in their song texts. The findings show an increase in songs mentioning artificial intelligence-related terms, with a trend of more songs implying negativity, such as anger. However, minor increases in positive emotions indicate musicians' ambivalent views on hopes and fear of artificial intelligence. Collapse

Abstract: Much has been written about how social media platforms enable the rise of networked activism. However, few studies have examined how these platforms’ low-information environments shape how social movement activists, their opponents, and social media platforms interact. Hate speech reporting is one understudied area where such interactions occur. This article fills this gap by examining to what extent and how the gender and popularity of counterspeech in comment sections influence social media users’ willingness to report hate speech on the #MeToo movement. Based on a survey experiment (n = 1250) conducted in South Korea, we find that YouTube users are more willing to report such sexist hate speech when the counterspeech is delivered by a female rather than a male user. However, when the female user’s counterspeech received many upvotes, this was perceived to signal her enhanced status and decreased the intention to report hate speech, particularly among male users. No parallel patterns were found regarding other attitudes toward hate speech, counterspeech, YouTube, the #MeToo movement, and gender discrimination and hate speech legislation. These findings inform that users report hate speech based on potentially harmful content as well as their complex social interactions with other users and the platform. Collapse

Abstract: We examine the impact of firm social media engagement on sales performance, answering "whether," "what," and "how" questions. The study uses a quasi-experimental design in a social e-commerce setting, for which propensity score matching and difference-in-differences methods quantify a mean 20.67% sales increase after firm social media adoption. We also find that firms that sell low-involvement products benefit more from social media adoption, compared to those that sell high-involvement products. Further, in terms of how to manage social media engagement, we find that informative content, in general, is effective for sales of high-involvement products, whereas promotional content, a new type of content discovered in this study, is more beneficial for sales of low-involvement products. Meanwhile, more social media followers generate better firm sales performance. We used instrumental variables and the control function method to address endogeneity issues and conducted robustness checks to support our conclusions. This study sheds light on the value of firm social media, particularly regarding industry differences and firm know-how. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations have been increasingly exploring storytelling as a valuable strategy to engage customers to increase their attention and retention. Social media platforms like Instagram have become essential tools for many brands to use storytelling through influencers. In this study, we explore the narratives constructed by digital influencers, as they play a crucial role in shaping their brand image and engagement with their audience. By analysing the narrative strategies used by digital influencers, we contribute to a deeper understanding of the role and impact of digital storytelling. We identify, illustrate, and discuss four narrative strategies: educating, evaluating, advising, and entertaining. Abstract: Current customer service chatbots often struggle to meet customer expectations. One reason is that despite advances in artificial intelligence (AI), the natural language understanding (NLU) capabilities of chatbots are often far from perfect. In order to improve them, chatbot managers need to make informed decisions and continuously adapt the chatbot's NLU model to the specific topics and expressions used by customers. Customer-chatbot interaction data is an excellent source of information for these adjustments because customer messages contain specific topics and linguistic expressions representing the domain of the customer service chatbot. However, extracting insights from such data to improve the chatbot's NLU, its architecture, and ultimately the conversational experience requires appropriate systems and methods, which are currently lacking. Therefore, we conduct a design science research project to develop a novel artifact based on chatbot interaction data that supports NLU improvement. Collapse

Abstract: Unstructured multimedia data (text and audio) provides unprecedented opportunities to derive actionable decision-making in the financial industry, in areas such as portfolio and risk management. However, due to formidable methodological challenges, the promise of business value from unstructured multimedia data has not materialized. In this study, we use a design science approach to develop DeepVoice, a novel nonverbal predictive analysis system for financial risk prediction, in the setting of quarterly earnings conference calls. DeepVoice forecasts financial risk by leveraging not only what managers say (verbal linguistic cues) but also how managers say it (vocal cues) during the earnings conference calls. The design of DeepVoice addresses several challenges associated with the analysis of nonverbal communication. We also propose a two-stage deep learning model to effectively integrate managers' sequential vocal and verbal cues. Using a unique dataset of 6,047 earnings call samples (audio recordings and textual transcripts) of S&P 500 firms across four years, we show that DeepVoice yields remarkably lower risk forecast errors than that achieved by previous efforts. The improvement can also translate into nontrivial economic gains in options trading. The theoretical and practical implications of analyzing vocal cues are discussed.Challenge 1: Time variation. Managers' vocal features can vary substantially during conference calls. For example, during the presentation section, when the manager is reading a forward-looking statement, the voice pitch may be quite stable. However, individuals' vocal cues may change as a result of being nervous, uncertain, or excited (Scherer et al., 1991). As such, in the question-answer section, when the manager is being scrutinized by analysts, the voice pitch may change. Mayew et al. (2020) found that the voice pitch of managers during dialogues with analysts is lower by about 4 Hz, on average, compared to their voice pitch during presentation sessions. Therefore, the time-varying patterns of managers' vocal cues may contain useful information. However, prior studies have ignored the time-varying pattern of managers' vocal cues in earnings conference calls (Mayew et al., 2020;, and it is unclear how a predictive model could effectively summarize time-varying vocal sequences.Challenge 2: Vocal-verbal integration. According to nonverbal communication theory (Mehrabian, 1972), vocal cues play a key role in nonverbal communication, as they can either affirm or discredit a message. For example, if a manager claims the company has strong future growth but uses a pessimistic tone of voice, market participants listening to the conference call may spot the irregularity and interpret the verbal message differently. This implies that to accurately gauge the information contained in managers' communication, one should integrate verbal language with the accompanying vocal cues. However, existing computational models (Poria et al., 2017) are limited in terms of integrating these two different communication channels (i.e., vocal and verbal).Challenge 3: Vocal complexity. Identifying the specific acoustic constructs from voice is a complex process, and the literature is still evolving without any consensus on an appropriate model for measuring affective states, emotions, and trust (Mayew & Venkatachalam, 2013). There is also little agreement about how a speaker's vocal cues should be combined to identify emotional states (Schuller, 2010)-e.g., which vocal cues to investigate and measure and how much weight to place on each vocal cue. As a result, attempts to develop constructs from vocal cues may suffer from high measurement errors. Collapse

Abstract: Several studies have highlighted the importance of leadership communication in establishing stakeholder alignment, implementing strategy, and achieving superior organizational performance. In this way, this study investigates the impact of CEO's communication styles on organizational performance using textmining approach on CEOs tweets from social media. This study aims to examine the relationship between CEO communication styles and organizational performance. The contribution of our study is three-folded: 1) From a methodological standpoint, we present a model to establish a relationship between CEO communication styles on social media and firm performance. Additionally, we apply text mining to identify communication styles of CEOs. 2) From a performance management, we evaluate organizational performance in three types: Operational, Financial, and Reputational. 3) From a management practice and policy perspective, our study results will help organizations evaluate the CEO candidates from a communication style standpoint. IntroductionThe importance of CEOs has been well recognized in strategic management literature. CEOs represent the company as the highest-ranking corporate spokesman responsible for communicating the company's goals (Chen and Chung 2016). A successful CEO not only strengthens public identification with the business and generates a strong corporate reputation, but also builds beneficial relationships with key stakeholders to achieve financial benefits (Tsai and Men 2017). According to upper echelons theory, a CEOs observable and psychological characteristics influence his or her decisions, and thus company performance. CEO communication is one of the major observable and psychological characteristic that can help understand CEO behavior. With the growing need for effective corporate governance and authenticity fueled by social media, the public has tended to recognize greater access to the views and vision of corporate executives through more open interactions. CEOs' public personas have shifted to one that is more personable, sociable, and open to the public than ever before. As a leader of the organization, CEOs have greater responsibility to engage both internal and external stakeholders. Social media is a powerful communication medium, with widespread influence all over the world. CEOs' can leverage social media platforms such as Twitter, to interact and engage with various stakeholders. As a key psychological characteristic, CEO communication has been considered as one of the key managerial cognitive abilities that achieve superior business performance (Bakker-Pieper and de Vries 2013). Thus, it is essential to understand the impact of CEO communication styles on organizational performance.Previous studies on CEO behavior majority looked at the emotionality (Rajah et al. 2011) and personality (Andersen 2006) aspect of CEOs. As per as per (Bakker-Pieper and de Vries 2013) the communication styles are more relevant and were strongly linked to the leader outcomes than emotionality and personality traits. From a comprehensive view, communication comprises multiple dimensions and all dimensions take effect simultaneously when a CEO makes decisions. So, we adopt (Schulz von Thun 1983) communication theory, which is the widely accepted framework for measuring communication types, to capture every aspect of CEO communication styles. Research in this area requires studies to investigate relationship between CEO communication styles and organizational performance. This problem represents a pertinent gap in Upper Echelons literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to present a model to establish a relationship between CEO communication styles on social media and firm performance. Additionally, we apply text mining, which is not commonly used in to identify communication styles of CEO in the literature. The communication styles being the variables of interest in the study are primarily drawn from (Stajner et al. 2021) include Self-Revealing, Action-Seeking, Fact-Oriented, and Information-Seeking. They may also be referred to as psycholinguistic cues representing the style or state respectively (Stajner et al. 2021). Action-seeking or task-oriented leadership communication has been acknowledged as particularly useful in emergency situations, or at times, when the company must be going through a crisis. In such cases, action seeking communication is synonymous with providing a definitive direction, and thus is likely to improve specific efficiency and productivity outcomes, falling mainly within an operational domain (Groves 2007). Hence, Hypothesis 3: There is a significant impact of a CEO's action-seeking style on organizational performance variables.Information-seeking (I-S) communication style is one, wherein direct or indirect questions are sought from others (Stajner et al. 2021). In social-media communication terms, the information-seeking communication style involves engaging others by posing questions or asking for advice (Symanto, 2022). Within the CEO communication sphere, information-seeking communication largely connotes advice-seeking communication (Ma et al. 2020). Such communication behavior has been found to have important effects on business and operational performance aspects like strategic decision making, management effectiveness, entrepreneurial orientation, innovation, and financial performance. Such CEO communication also likely affects relative competitive firm performance (Heyden et al. 2013). Hence, Hypothesis 4: There is a significant impact of a CEO's information-seeking style on organizational performance variables. Conclusion and LimitationsThis study aimed to find the relationship between CEO communication styles and organizational performance. This research answers a critical question in terms of organizational strategy literature, what dimensions of CEO communication styles affect organizational performance and in which direction. The study contributes in multiple ways: (1). We present a model to establish a relationship between CEO communication styles on social media and firm performance. Additionally, we apply text mining, which is not commonly used in to identify communication styles of CEO in the literature. AI-based text mining strategy based on social media data to quantify the CEO's communication styles (2). Theoretically, we contribute to strategic management and upper echelon theory. By far, we are the first to examine CEO communication styles across three types of organizational performance: operational, financial, and reputational (3). In practice, our findings provide a foundation for organizations to assess executive candidates from a communication standpoint.Our results do have some limitations: 1) We are restricted to a small dataset since only a few CEOs were active on social media, in our case, Twitter. 2) We only used a single social media platform, "Twitter", to crawl the CEO's textual data. Crawling from multiple social media sites such as Facebook, personal blogs will provide holistic data, thus providing rich insights. 3) Our results provide an overall effect of CEO communication styles on organizational performance. Future studies may identify the potential mediating and moderating paths to provide better organization performance. Collapse

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown bore a devastating impact on organizations across the globe. In this crisis, organizations belonged to the victim cluster, with a low crisis responsibility. Nevertheless, organizations needed to strategize their crisis responses and communicate with stakeholders to reduce the threat to reputa tional capital and manage stakeholder reactions in the pandemic. In this paper, we studied organizational Twitter communication during the COVID-19 crisis through the lens of the situational crisis communication theory (SCCT). We analyzed 325,627 tweets collected from the Twitter pages of 464 organizations belonging to the Fortune 500 list. The Twitter data reflected organizational COVID-19 crisis response strategies and demonstrated organizational use of Twitter for crisis communication. We applied lexicon-based emotion mining to identify and measure emotions, and topic mining to measure crisis response topic scores from this large multi-organization dataset. We performed path analysis to test our research model derived from the SCCT. The analysis showed that instructing and adjusting information can minimize threats to organizational reputation in a victim crisis and manage stakeholder reactions. Positive emotions showed a stronger association with behavioral outcomes. Emotion neutral tweets generated more favorable stakeholder reactions. The paper contributes to the literature on situational crisis communication for a victim crisis. The multi-organization data addresses the sensitive interorganization dependencies and improves the understanding of crisis communication. It provides practitioners an insight into the effect of the COVID-19 crisis response strategies on stakeholder emotions and behavior. Collapse

Abstract: Firms of all sizes are “joining the conversation” on social media platforms and increasingly trademarking hashtags related to their products and brands. This added effort to protect intellectual property and its impact on social media engagement have not been investigated in the literature. In this study, we attempt to bridge this important gap in the literature by first examining the impact of trademarking a hashtag on a firm’s social media audience engagement. By adopting multiple causal identification strategies to address the issues of self-selected trademarking, we find that trademarking hashtags plays a pivotal role in increasing social media audience engagement and information dissemination. More importantly, this positive effect is stronger for firms with fewer Twitter followers. Digging deeper into the underlying mechanisms, we find that trademarking hashtags makes composing tweets with certain linguistic styles more critical: It can amplify the positive effects of trademarking hashtags on social media audience engagement. Our findings highlight important managerial implications of trademarking hashtags. First of all, we examine whether trademarking a hashtag helps or hurts a firm in terms of its social media audience engagement. Further, we show, to maximize the effectiveness of trademarking hashtags, how firms should develop the right social media engagement strategies by taking specific communication and linguistic styles into account. Our results provide useful insights to firms in understanding the key benefits of signaling through trademarking hashtags on social media engagement.
