Abstract: We aim to understand why employees take information technology (IT)-mediated shortcuts, that is, skipping one or several steps for completing tasks quicker by bending the rules. This is a specific and often detrimental form of noncompliant behavior. Adopting an ego-depletion perspective, we posit that IT complexity drives IT-mediated shortcuts by increasing employees' ego-depletion. Extending this view, we use a modified Delphi study and build on self-regulatory and goal setting theories to point to key boundary conditions for these effects. First, in a preliminary study we found that taking IT-mediated shortcuts in our context is, on average, detrimental to employee performance. This highlighted the need to focus on IT-mediated shortcuts. Next, we tested our assertions with three experiments focusing on the use of dashboards with 584 data analysts. The results show that (1) dashboard complexity increases ego depletion, (2) ego depletion fully mediates the impact of dashboard complexity on taking IT-mediated shortcuts, (3) moral integrity moderates the influence of ego depletion on taking IT-mediated shortcuts, and (4) outcome compared to learning goals enhance the impact of ego depletion on IT-mediated shortcuts. In all studies, objectively measured IT-mediated shortcut-taking was negatively associated with objectively measured task performance. Ultimately, the integrated perspective explains whether, how, and under what conditions IT complexity drives IT-mediated shortcuts. Collapse

Abstract: Live-streaming has emerged as a popular direct selling channel to foster synchronous interaction between streamers and consumers, with the avatar streamer largely underexplored. Using the data from a fashion retailer, we adopt the Generalized Synthetic Control (GSC) method to examine the effect of gamified and human livestreaming on product sales and return rate. We find that (1) the gamified live-streaming reduces product sales and the return rate simultaneously; (2) human live-streaming boosts product sales but increases the return rate, and (3) the dual-type live-streaming can increase product sales and decrease return rates. Furthermore, we proposed that the reason for the differentiated effects between gamified and human live-streaming could be driven by the impulse-buying behavior of viewers only in human live-streaming. Our findings contribute to the growing literature on the business value of AI technology and gamification in live-streaming and shed light on practical decisions made by online retailers. Collapse

Abstract: Online reviews are aimed to help prospective buyers in their decision-making. While prior research has focused on the economic impact of ratings, review volume, helpfulness and sentiments, open research questions remain regarding the evolution of text attributes associated with online reviews. Using a large dataset, we extract sentiment intensity, along with novel attributes – product usage contexts and product features – present in each online review and analyze their pattern over the temporal order of the reviews. Results indicate that sentiment intensity as well as the number of product features and usage contexts diminish with respect to the increase in review order, suggesting that earlier reviews tend to have more information for prospective customers. However, the declining trend of sentiment intensity is less when reviews mention a higher number of product features and usage contexts. These findings contribute to the literature while having key practical implications for e-commerce websites, retailers, and customers. Collapse

Abstract: Customer misbehavior is a serious and pervasive problem in firm-sponsored social media, yet prior studies provide limited insight into how firms should detect and manage it. To address this gap, we first develop a data science approach to detect customer misbehavior on social media and then devise intervention strategies to deter it. Specifically, we build on natural language processing and deep learning techniques to automatically detect customer misbehavior by mining customers’ social media activities in collaboration with a leading apparel firm. The results show that our algorithmic solution achieves superior performance, improving detection by 7%–9% compared with traditional methods. We then implement two types of intervention policies based on the focus theory of normative conduct that advocates the use of injunctive norms (i.e., a punishment policy) and descriptive norms (i.e., a common identity policy) to restrain customer misbehavior. We conduct field experiments with the firm to validate these policies. The experimental results indicate that punishment considerably reduces customer misbehavior in the short term, but this effect decays over time, whereas common identity has a smaller but more persistent effect on misbehavior reduction. In addition, punishing dysfunctional customers decreases their purchase frequency, whereas imposing a common identity increases it. Interestingly, our results show that combining the two policies effectively alleviates the detrimental effect of punishment, especially in the long run. We examine the heterogeneous treatment effect on novice and experienced customers. Finally, a follow-up field experiment reveals that the disclosure of the use of an artificial intelligence detector improves the effectiveness of the intervention strategies, and this effect is more pronounced for the punishment and combination strategies. Abstract: This study focuses on examining client citizenship behaviors (CCBs) from a psychological contract perspective in enterprise systems (ES) vendor–client relationships. Using polynomial modeling to capture the discrepancy be­ tween expected obligations and delivered fulfillments, this stud unpacks psychological contract and investigates the impacts of psychological contract under-fulfillment, fulfillment, and over-fulfillment on CCBs. The results show that both under-fulfillment and over-fulfillment of psychological contract are negatively related to CCBs. CCBs are shown to be higher when expected obligation and delivered fulfillment are both high than when both are low. The theoretical contributions and practical implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: We build on the theoretical foundations of consumer engagement from the marketing literature to propose a novel way to measure consumer brand engagement (CBE) using machine learning and natural language processing of consumer-generated online content. We conceptualize customer-written product reviews as more than just eWOM influencing purchase decisions, but as indicators of CBE. Our method is operationalized through a general-purpose artifact that allows continuous, time-variant, and flexible measurement of CBE. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through a large dataset of product reviews of multiple brands of a Fortune 500 garment retailer. Our contribution has implications for research, in that, it creates an opportunity to investigate the antecedent and consequent relationships between CBE and other critical marketing constructs such as intention to purchase and customer loyalty. Further, the ability to measure the time-variant nature of CBE allows for testing leading and lagging relationships between CBE and other key business indicators. Collapse

Abstract: In enterprise system (ES) project, knowledge sharing between client and ES vendor is a pivotal practice to ensure its success. However, it is a tradeoff for managers to balance two forms of knowledge sharing – exploitative and exploratory knowledge sharing. This study provides a preliminary insight by investigating the effects of congruence and incongruence of knowledge sharing on the success of ES project. Using data collected from 112 clients of an ES vendor, we apply polynomial modeling and response surface methodology for an in depth analysis. Our findings point out the importance of congruence between the two forms of knowledge sharing and we also find that exploratory knowledge sharing between client and ES vendor is a prerequisite to the success of ES project. In future research, we aim to examine how to balance the two forms of knowledge sharing and find out which kind of knowledge should be necessarily shared. Collapse

Abstract: There has been widespread use of auto-ID technologies. With the increasing diffusion of smartphones, the potential to serve content to shoppers using auto-ID technologies is starting to receive interest. Using a design science approach, we design and build, theorize about, and compare six shopping assistance artifacts by manipulating the hardware design-barcode scanner versus radio frequency identification (RFID) reader-and content design-product information versus product review versus both. We theorize about how these artifact conditions will compare to a control condition (no shopping assistance artifact available) across three sets of outcomes: technology adoption, security beliefs, and shopping. We tested our propositions in two experiments-wherein the task was varied: general browsing and shopping (n = 227) versus goal-directed shopping (n = 221)-conducted in a retail store laboratory. The RFID reader was most favorably received in terms of technology adoption outcomes and shopping outcomes, although it was most negatively viewed in terms of security beliefs. We also found that the content design conditions (i.e., product information, product reviews, and both) were perceived favorably. In a post hoc analysis, we found a two-way interaction of hardware and content designs such that content fueled by RFID was perceived most favorably in terms of technology adoption and shopping outcomes, whereas it was most negatively viewed in terms of security beliefs. Interestingly, the two-way interaction was most pronounced in the goal-directed shopping condition such that the most positive effects were observed for RFID in combination with both product information and reviews. Abstract: Online sellers in the e-marketplace cooperate with each other to increase resources and reduce transaction costs, both of which are crucial to the success of small businesses. A commonly used IT-enabled strategy is to ally with other online sellers by exchanging hyperlinks. This paper provides theoretical guidance to sellers on how to choose partners to improve reciprocity rates in hyperlink formation. Using the resource-based view and transaction-cost rationale, we examine the effects of market conditions and seller reputation on reciprocity link formation, using real transaction data from the largest online marketplace in China. The findings indicate that partners are less likely to exchange hyperlinks if the two sellers sharing a link are in highly overlapping markets and are geographically distant from one another, but the two factors weaken each other's negative effects. The study also explores the moderating effect of seller reputation, and finds that the negative effect of market commonality is weakened by seller reputation. The results of this study can be extended to other types of small business cooperation and are also useful to platform operators for designing mechanisms to encourage cooperation among online sellers. Abstract: The number of product returns represents a considerable cost factor in e-commerce, especially in the apparel sector. The application of advanced information technologies and predictive analytics, enabling to capture and analyze massive amounts of user data, pave the way for a more efficient management of product returns and reverse logistics. However, we identify a lack of data-driven approaches in this area, especially regarding product returns prediction. In this paper, we present an ensemble selection approach for predicting product returns in the apparel sector. Computational experiments indicate that our approach produces satisfying results in terms of prediction quality. We further explore the correlation between sample sizes and computational times. Thereby, we demonstrate that the run-time increases exponentially when using more data records. To address heavy run-time overheads resulting from high processing and memory requirements of classifiers, we present a framework to embed ensemble selection processes into a highly scalable cloud environment. The framework explains the provisioning of cloud resources and parallelization of tasks according to ensemble selection processes. It further builds a basis for considering data streams, data splitting, and a dynamic adoption of changing customer behavior over time, which has not been considered in related work so far. The envisioned forecasting support system aids retailers in reducing product returns and increasing profit margins. Collapse
