Abstract: We present a critical ethnographic study of data labelling conducted in a Bangalore-based AI start-up. Labelled datasets are primarily produced by human data workers. We explore how humans and machines are configured together in data labelling and what are the demands placed on human workers, including on their body and cognition, while being assigned in the service of machine intelligence. We also show how these human-machine configurations sustain and reproduce the seamless functioning of apparently "autonomous" AI as a normative vision. Though labelled datasets are an indispensable prerequisite to creating ML/AI-based systems, the human labour that produces these datasets cannot be acknowledged fully if the techno-entrepreneurial vision of "self-learning" machine intelligence is to be celebrated and sustained. In pursuit of a normative position of what AI should be, we are left with a denial of how AI is actually produced now. Collapse

Abstract: Doxing, a form of adversarial online behavior, is the aggregation and release of an individual's personal information with malicious intent. It is increasingly used to intimidate, punish, or silence individuals. Such weaponization of personal information can result in extreme and intertwined cyber harassment and physical threats, significantly affecting doxees' participation in both cyber and physical communities. While prior research has examined the underlying motives of the doxer, the doxee's perspective has remained largely unexplored. Drawing on data from 14 individuals who have experienced doxing, this study examines the consequences of doxing from the doxee's point of view. Employing the lens of approach and avoidance coping, we explore how doxees respond to doxing threats and adapt their behavior. Our research provides novel insight and themes related to doxing. Based on our analysis, we offer an agenda for information systems (IS) research and practice, paving the way for exploring doxing and potential remedies. Collapse

Abstract: What is the optimal size for online groups that use electronic communication and collaboration tools? Previous research typically suggested optimal group sizes of about 5 to 7 members, but this research predominantly examined in-person groups. Here we investigate online groups whose members communicate with each other using two electronic collaboration tools: text chat and shared editing. Unlike previous research that studied groups performing a single task, here we measure group performance using a test of collective intelligence (CI) that includes a combination of tasks specifically chosen to predict performance on a wide range of other tasks [72]. Our findings suggest that there is a curvilinear relationship between group size and performance and that the optimal group size in online groups is between 25 and 35. This, in turn, suggests that online groups may now allow more people to be productively involved in group decision-making than was possible with in-person groups in the past. Collapse

Abstract: Organisational employees increasingly rely on various social media to develop guanxi online, resulting in the potentially huge value of identifying how social media can contribute to guanxi development in the workplace. In this study of digital guanxi development within Chinese organisations, we examine the role of different types of social media on the development of guanxi and its various dimensions. Based on an exploratory case study, we propose a theoretical framework that illustrates two mechanisms by which social media influence the development of digital guanxi at work. Our preliminary findings suggest that enterprise social media and public social media provide and reinforce instrumental and affective values, respectively, thereby facilitating guanxi development in the workplace. Abstract: The emergence of Chatbots has attracted many firms to sell their merchandise via chats and bots. Although Chatbots have received tremendous interest, little is understood about how different usage contexts affect Chatbots’ effectiveness in mobile commerce. Due to differences in their nature, not all shopping contexts are suitable for Chatbots. To address this research gap, this study examines how contextual factors (i.e., intrinsic task complexity that embraces shopping task attributes and group shopping environment, and extrinsic task complexity that entails information intensity) affect user perceptions and adoption intentions of Chatbots as recommendation agents in mobile commerce. Applying the lenses of cognitive load theory (CLT) and common ground theory (CGT), we perform an experiment and apply quantitative analytical approaches. The results show that Chatbots are more suitable in the context of one-attribute, information-light, and group-buying tasks, whereas traditional Apps are suitable for multi-attribute, information-intensive, and single-buying scenarios. These findings make important theoretical contributions to the IT adoption literature as well as to CLT and CGT theory by contextualizing the evolving state of Chatbot commerce and providing guidelines for designing better Chatbot user experiences, thereby enhancing user perceptions and adoption intentions. Abstract: Despite their astounding growth in recent years, online gig platforms face key challenges to increase gig workers' working commitment. This study aims to examine the impact of a fundamental organizational design element payout frequency, which refers to the intervals at which workers access the funds they have earned. Drawing on expectancy theory, we argue that a higher payout frequency enhances both the quantity and quality of gig work. To investigate this, we analyze proprietary data from a quasi-natural experiment that involved an unexpected reduction in the payout cycle for gig workers in a specific geographic region. By employing propensity score matching and a difference-in-differences approach, we demonstrate that a shorter payout cycle led to an increase in the effort among the impacted gig workers and also resulted in improved work quality. These findings contribute to our understanding of effectively motivating and managing gig workers, ultimately influencing customer engagement on platforms. Collapse

Abstract: Enterprise social media (ESM) has blurred employees’ work–life distinction; however, limited research has investigated the impact of social-related ESM use during work time and the management measures. We propose such use consumes employees’ work resources. Our survey of a research and development company in China confirms that such use decreases individuals’ collaboration and increases information overload, harming work performance. To mitigate the negative influence, we focus on ESM functionalities, conceptualize the action possibilities permitted by functionalities as attention regulation affordance, and investigate the moderating role of the affordance actualization. The results revealed that affordance actualization reduces negative ESM use effects. Collapse

Abstract: Blockchain-based non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have heralded a new age of digital ownership, enabling business models across various applications. Representing noninterchangeable, physical or digital objects, particularly the subcategory of profile picture (PFP) projects gained considerable attention in 2021. However, a comprehensive analysis providing insights into the design of PFP business models is still missing. Therefore, we analyzed the business models of successful PFP projects in an iterative study. We combined a literature review with the empirical analysis of 60 projects, resulting in two outcomes: (1) A taxonomy that uncovers crucial dimensions and characteristics, and (2) five business model archetypes representing common combinations of these attributes. Our research provides insights into key patterns of PFP projects and their business models. We also enable practitioners to better understand and manage the opportunities and challenges associated. Abstract: Software lab courses are in a paradoxical situation: teaching and experiencing software engineering processes requires large and complex projects as well as various tools but target students with extremely diverse prior knowledge, thus regularly overwhelming the more inexperienced ones. In this paper, we present a software lab course design: we expose teams of students to the full complexity of software development projects while simultaneously employing various systems that identify issues in teamwork or project progress and allow lecturers to provide on-demand support throughout all stages.
