Abstract: With the rise of socio-political movements seeking to improve women's circumstances in society, research on gender has been continuously growing in Information Systems (IS) research. Despite this growth, critical-ethical perspectives on gender power dynamics are lacking. Therefore, we critically investigate the perceptions of male and female IS developers on gender inequalities using feminist ethics of power. We find that interviewees coincide in the belief that inequalities are improving and that gender is not a limiting factor of competencies. However, men and women deviate regarding perceptions of respect and validation, equality, and the drivers that (re-)produce disparities. Additionally, women exhibit fragmented conceptualizations of inclusion. Through a critical analysis of these findings, we expose ethical dilemmas that arise from these contradictory perceptions of gender inequalities and propose pathways for transforming the prevailing order. Our study contributes by advancing a broader perspective on inequalities through the lens of feminist ethics of power. Collapse

Abstract: Digital trace data, along with computational techniques to analyze them, provide novel means to study how organizational phenomena change over time. Yet, as digital traces typically lack context, it is challenging to explain why and how such changes take place. In this paper, we discuss temporal bracketing as an approach to integrate context into digital trace data-based research. We conceptualize a framework to apply temporal bracketing in the analysis of digital trace data. We showcase our framework on the grounds of data from an onboarding process of a financial institution in Central Europe. We point to several implications for computationally intensive theory development around change with digital trace data. Collapse

Abstract: This paper investigates determinants of recommendation systems’ performance in an online experiment in a large European Internet footwear store. By combining transactional data and archival customer records, a unique database was compiled from which proxy variables were extracted to represent dimensions of consumer loyalty and shopping involvement. These variables were combined in regression analysis with technical characteristics of two types of algorithms employed for generating recommendations: the EMDE algorithm, relying on the LSH method, and the industry-standard CF-RS. Statistical analysis reveals that recommendations are more successful when visual data modality is combined with behavioural data. Better recommendation performance was found to be associated with lower levels of consumer involvement in shopping, as well as higher levels of trust and engagement with the vendor. Experience with the vendor showed a negative correlation with recommendation performance through both its main effect and by its interactions with other consumer-related variables. Collapse

Abstract: The creation of data-driven services generates new value streams, leading to the emergence of new actors and ultimately to new market configurations. In the automotive industry, the data generated by vehicles during use paves the way for new types of data-driven services. Based on interviews with eleven prominent experts of the Central European automotive industry, we identify key actors in establishing vehicle data-driven services and their data sharing relationships. We illustrate both in a conceptual multi-actor model for value creation in vehicle data-driven services and evaluate it in the context of six real-life cases. Our study adopts an ecosystem perspective and marks an important step towards the systematic design of a conceptual multi-actor model for vehicle data-driven value creation that can help to guide next research endeavours in data-driven service development. Abstract: Successful IT business transformations require a departure from silo thinking in individual projects to a broader perspective in holistic, process-oriented programs. Such programs face latent paradoxical tensions that can become salient throughout their (re-)design and execution. Prior research suggests ambidextrous leadership by the program management team to resolve such salient paradoxical tensions. However, little is known about whether such unilateral and top-down approaches can restore sustainable equilibria or even trigger follow-up tensions between program-level objectives and projectlevel needs. Therefore, this study explores whether and how ambidextrous leadership to resolve strategic tensions can trigger follow-up tensions and how such follow-up tensions can be addressed to restore sustainable equilibria. To this end, we conducted an ethnographic study in an IT transformation program at a large Central European telecommunications company. We find that ambidextrous leadership is likely to create ripple effects by increasing belonging tensions between projects and programs, thus preventing sustainable equilibria. Moreover, we identify three ways programs and projects can address such follow-up tension. Our findings have significant implications for program management theory, paradox theory, and practice. Abstract: Although several theories could be applied to stimulate mobile health (mHealth) use and change people's health behaviors, theory-driven mHealth designs are scarce. Instead, developers and researchers often implement behavior change techniques and mix multiple techniques without explicitly considering their underlying theoretical mechanisms. We call this practice into question and propose that combining behavior change techniques doesnot necessarily result in synergistic effects. Drawing on theories of protection motivation and social upward comparison, we engage in explanatory design theorizing to understand interactions of behavior change techniques and their implications for mHealth design. We design, theorize about, and evaluate four mHealth prototypes for stress alleviation. In a five-week field experiment with n = 138 participants and a subsequent qualitative substantiation, we show that there is a negative interaction effect of protection motivation and social upward comparison, rendering their combined application less effective. Our findings elicit mutual boundary conditions for theories of protection motivation and social upward comparison. If mechanisms of one theory are present, they restrict the effectiveness of mechanisms of the other theory. Thus, mHealth developers need to use caution when combining different behavior change techniques within one mHealth artifact. Collapse

Abstract: As unforeseen situations, emergencies threaten the environment, property, and people’s lives. Large emergencies are characterized by the demand for coordination of a variety of actors, such as civil defense or disaster relief. Communication and information exchange are crucial for coordination. Therefore, a solid, stable communication infrastructure is among the crucial factors for emergency response. New technologies that seem to ensure trustworthy communication must be evaluated constantly. Blockchain technology is widely applied in a broad variety of contexts and is commonly known for its decentralized and distributed governance. This is the motivation for the design and evaluation of a framework for the adoption of blockchain technology in the case of emergency response following a design science approach. Evaluation of the artifact using a specific evaluation framework clearly indicates the suitability of the case for application of blockchain technology. Collapse

Abstract: Digital transformation and the resulting volatile and unpredictable business environments challenge traditional enterprises to continuously fulfill and surpass customers’ expectations. They need to become agile in its organization by proactively sensing the unpredictable change and responding accordingly with speed and dexterity. While many organizations are quite advanced in realizing adaptivity at the operational level, strategic agility in general and in portfolio management in particular as linking operations and strategy for satisfying the customer needs is in its nascence. To identify the baseline for portfolio management for achieving agility, we derive four design goals for an effective agile portfolio management system, six design principles on how to achieve these goals and show an exemplary setup with design features. Our results are based on a research study with empirical insights from six companies and theoretical input from thirteen existing case studies and eight frameworks for scaling agility to the portfolio level. By deriving design principles for an agile portfolio management system, our work closes a gap in existing research, which focuses on principles for adaptive IT portfolio management processes instead of proactive enterprise systems, insights on individual portfolio practices or non-generalizable blueprints for an agile organizational setup without showing alternative approaches. Abstract: Immersive virtual reality technology (VR) receives more and more attention, especially since the release of the Oculus Rift (development kit 2) in 2016. This technology is not only used in the gaming industry but also in serious contexts such as product design or education. The creation of high immersion is commonly said to be the special characteristic of VR. We consider two perspectives on immersion: firstly, immersion in the task and, secondly, immersion in the technology. Our work focuses on immersion as part of the learning related theory of cognitive absorption to examine the theoretical difference between task and technology immersion in the case of individual learning with immersive VR technology. We conducted an explorative Grounded Theory approach with 10 in-depth interviews based on first-hand experience with a self-developed immersive VR application. We propose theoretical and design implications for how VR can potentially enhance individual learning. Collapse
