Abstract: Distributed ledger technology (DLT) has been salient in research and practice for over a decade, with substantial investments in numerous areas. Still, the absence of a rapid, industry-wide success fuels skepticism and numerous decision frameworks emerged focusing on how to scaffold DLT utilization. However, a consideration of needs, added value, and integrative design of DLT-based systems remains overlooked. By analyzing existing frameworks and DLT Proof-of-Concepts, we provide a research-inprogress decision framework for making evidence-based decisions on whether to use DLT and how to design a technology bundle for specific cases. Our main contribution centers on the focus on rapid collaborative prototyping. For applicability and validation, we implement the framework in an online questionnaire-like tool that generates a detailed report as a basis for an informed decision. While beneficial for academia and practice, our framework draws clear directions for future research on complementary tools, enhanced recommendations and the design of feasible DLT solutions for real world challenges. Abstract: Information systems (IS) service organizations are increasingly more concerned with their ability to co-create digital services with customers in service ecosystems. Practitioners and researchers, however, lack understanding of which organization mechanisms effectively contribute to IS organizations’ innovation practices. Grounded in service-dominant logic, we hypothesized that process reference frameworks (PRFs), such as the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL), act as institutional arrangements through their norms, rules, and practices, enhancing IS organizations’ ability to innovate digital services. Data collected from 159 IS organizations confirmed our hypotheses, showing that effects on digital service innovation are mediated by an organization’s digital service climate and co-creation practices. This study makes four major contributions. First, our results contribute to the literature on service-dominant logic and the role of institutional arrangements in facilitating service innovation in service ecosystems. Second, our study offers a novel understanding of PRFs’ role in value cocreation and digital service innovation. Third, by introducing the digital service climate from existing theoretical frameworks that might assist in conceptualizing the role of culture and shared meaning, our study contributes to further theorizing on the social factors that influence service ecosystem practices. Finally, our findings can motivate IT managers to consider using PRFs to develop capabilities for creating business value together with customers. Collapse

Abstract: Although Business Process Management (BPM) scholars frequently refer to the importance of aligning employee appraisals and rewards with processes, little is known about how the BPM discipline relates to these human resource aspects. We therefore conducted an exploratory case study in an internationally oriented organization with high BPM maturity to acquire a deeper understanding with the first-hand practices. We first elaborate on how the case organization includes behavioural and results-related components into its appraisals and performance management approach to improve employee alignment and process performance. Afterwards, we explain how and for which processrelated elements employees get rewarded and recognized. As academic implications, we build two preliminary frameworks that lay the foundation for further research. We also provide managers with best practices and lessons learned, serving as a practical guidance. Collapse

Abstract: Digital technologies are critical to virtually any fast-growing entrepreneurial organizations in a variety of ways. A common theme in entrepreneurial growth literature involves conceiving of growth as a liminal period of transition when certain start-uprelated structures and behaviors persist, while other, more professional practices emerge. In this study, we report on an exploratory study of 20 fast-growing entrepreneurial organizations to understand how digitalization influences management practices in entrepreneurial growth. We extend the “digital technology perspective of entrepreneurship” by showing how digital technologies and the development of associated digital capabilities can provide a buffer through which entrepreneurial organizations can professionalize their organizations. Digital capabilities for entrepreneurial growth stand in sharp contrast to those of established organizations. Key enablers of growth call for a layered modular view of digital technologies, stepwise implementation, partial integration, and reuse on the content and service layers. Collapse

Abstract: Scientific cumulation is regarded as the goal of the information systems field but is challenged by complex and unaligned incentives operating differently at both institutional and individual level. Few studies have explored how incentives create barriers to scientific cumulation and how these can be addressed to achieve improved scientific progress. To address this, we introduce a process model of scientific cumulation and combine this with the perspective of business process management to describe the scientific process that must be managed and to show how active process ownership can contribute to stewardship of the scientific process. We argue that unaligned incentives that influence the IS field can best be managed with the goal of scientific progress and cumulation in mind, where process owners at many levels actively address barriers to cumulation. Abstract: Many organizations aim to standardize their processes to increase performance. Organizational governance is an important driver for successful business process standardization. A central role within this governance structure is performed by the process owner who is responsible for the definition of processes. In this paper, the effect of different possible configurations of assigning process ownership in an existing organizational multi-level hierarchical structure is analyzed by conducting an embedded case study. The most important finding was that in most cases process ownership was assigned to a person who was already line manager for a single business unit which was responsible for executing a part of or the whole process. Thus, responsibility for the process itself and for the required resources (e.g., personnel) was combined. Based on these findings, we plan to conduct a study to analyze the impact of the different process ownership assignments on the success of process standardization. Collapse

Abstract: Employees' knowledge as the guarantor of companies' success is an important asset of the enterprises' value. However, this knowledge is often not optimally used or even visible and available for employees and management within companies. This intangible knowledge leads to continuously reinvented wheels within organisations and employees misspend time learning processes in a cumbersome way on their own. To overcome this problem, we present a new approach aimed at connecting employees socially. The main novelty is the use of the organisation's business processes as basis for connecting employees by indicating their process-related areas of expertise. The goal is to enable enduring sharing and distribution of knowledge within an organisation to support decision making in process execution. Our evaluation results from two financial services companies show that employees perceive such a network as very helpful. Our approach leads to easier access, better search results and more opportunities to connect knowledge with other employees. Collapse

Abstract: Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a popular framework for IT governance, but little academic research on ITIL exists. The authors investigate the overlap between ITIL and IT governance practices to illustrate ITIL's potential to stimulate IT governance. A field study shows that IT implementation success is particularly influenced by group efficacy and organizational resources, and, to a lesser extent, senior-management involvement. Findings show that ITIL, as expected, is a framework that contributes to IT governance by stimulating process management practices. Collapse

Abstract: The emergence of information-intensive business process outsourcing (BPO) relationships calls for the study of exchange performance beyond traditional considerations of the contractual structure that facilitates cooperative intent to include the information structure that facilitates the mutual exchange of information to enact cooperative intent and coordinate actions between the user firm and the service provider. Yet, there has been little analysis of the drivers and performance effects of the information structure of BPO relationships, including its linkages to the underlying contractual structure. This study integrates perspectives in neo-institutional economics and information processing to develop and test the theoretical argument that the extent of use and performance effects of the information structure of the BPO relationship are greater in time and materials BPO contracts than in fixed-price BPO contracts. Survey data on 134 BPO relationships provide empirical support for our hypotheses. The synergistic impact of incentives and information on BPO performance emphasizes that their joint assessment is necessary to enhance the explanatory power of extant theories of organization. This result also has implications for achieving maximum benefits from complex BPO arrangements that are more likely to be characterized by time and material contracts. Collapse

Abstract: The increased reliance of companies on IT outsourcing has turned management attention to a set of skills of managing relationships with service providers. While some recent studies have shown that the contracting ability to effectively manage relational exchanges can improve various dimensions of organizational performance, there has been relatively little analysis of how firms strategically use contracts to successfully manage their interfirm relationships. As an extension of past studies emphasizing the importance of the contract and service level agreements (SLA), the study develop an inclusive and conceptually sound framework for structuring SLA in IT outsourcing arrangements drawing upon control theory. Along with a careful description of measurement development as well as rigorous statistical validations, it contributed to instrument development for a set of 11 first-order SLA contractual factors and their relationships with three second-order substantive factors. The results of the study are framed as a tool for benchmarking SLA structuring efforts as well as a foundation for the future study of managing IT outsourcing relationships. The study suggests empirically testing of (1) the complementarity or substitutability between formal contract and relational governance, (2) institution based trust as an initial trust building mechanism, and (3) IT outsourcing success from a contractual perspective as potential areas of future research using the results of the study.
