Abstract: Medical image annotation aims to automatically describe the content of medical images. It helps doctors to understand the content of medical images and make better informed decisions like diagnoses. Existing methods mainly follow the approach for natural images and fail to emphasize the object abnormalities, which is the essence of medical images annotation. In light of this, we propose to transform the medical image annotation to a multi-label classification problem, where object abnormalities are focused directly. However, extant multi-label classification studies rely on arduous feature engineering, or do not solve label correlation issues well in medical images. To solve these problems, we propose a novel deep learning model where a frequent pattern mining component and an adversarial-based denoising autoencoder component are introduced. Extensive experiments are conducted on a real retinal image dataset to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. Results indicate that the proposed model significantly outperforms image captioning baselines and multi-label classification baselines. Collapse

Abstract: Innovation is widely acknowledged as a key driver of firm performance, with patents serving as unique indicators of a company's technological advancements. This study aims to investigate the impact of textual novelty within patents on firm performance, focusing specifically on biotechnology startups listed on the Nasdaq. Utilizing deep learning-based approaches, we construct measures for semantic originality in patent texts. Through panel vector autoregressive (VAR) analysis, our empirical findings demonstrate a positive correlation between textual novelty and abnormal stock returns. Further, impulse response function analysis indicates that the impact of textual novelty peaks approximately one week after patent issuance and gradually diminishes within a month. These insights offer valuable contributions to both the theoretical understanding and practical application of innovation management and strategic planning. Collapse

Abstract: The cyber security industry is rapidly adopting threat hunting as a proactive tool for early and faster detection of suspected malicious actors. In this paper, we propose a machine learning-based method, Unsupervised Hunting of Anomalous Commands (UHAC), to detect text-based anomalous commands in security information and event management (SIEM) logs that are good candidates for threat hunting. A unique feature of the proposed method is that it first creates a feature set based on the augmentation of document-term and document-character matrices. Then, an autoencoder-based detector is trained on this feature set using a custom loss function. UHAC consis­ tently outperforms other feature sets and algorithms such as one-class support vector machine, density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise, and word-embedding based models such as word2vec. The UHAC detector identifies 84–89% of anomalies in the top 10% of the data. Findings have implications for cybersecurity analysts who perform threat hunting in SIEM logs for process auditing on endpoint devices. Collapse

Abstract: Extracting useful knowledge from multimodal data is the core of many multimedia applications, such as recommendation systems, and cross-modal retrieval. In this paper, we propose a label-based multimodal topic (LB-MMT) model to jointly model text and image data tagged with multiple labels. Specifically, we use the labels as supervised information to generate the text and image data. In the LB-MMT model, we assume that the textual words and visual words related to each text and image are drawn from a mixture of latent topics, where each topic is represented as a group of textual words and visual words. Moreover, we introduce multiple topics for each label, to build the top-down relationship from label to text and image. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we conduct extensive experiments on a real-world multimodal dataset with labels. The re­ sults show the proposed approach obtains superior performances on topic coherence and label prediction compared with previous competitors. In addition, we show that our model yields interesting insights about multimodal topics. The proposed model provides important practical implications, e.g., designing more attrac­ tive multimodal contents for marketers. Collapse

Abstract: Modern artificial intelligence (AI) is heavily reliant on deep learning (DL), an emerging class of algorithms that can automatically detect non-trivial patterns from petabytes of rapidly evolving "Big Data." Although the information systems (IS) discipline has embraced DL, questions remain about DL's interface with a domain and theory and DL contribution types. In this paper, we present a DL information systems research (DL-ISR) schematic that reviews DL while considering the role of the application environment and knowledge base, summarizes extant DL research in IS, a knowledge contribution framework (KCF) to position DL contributions, and ten guidelines to help IS scholars design, execute, and present DL for computational, behavioral, or economic IS research. We illustrate a research contribution to DL for cybersecurity. This article's contribution to theory resides in the conceptual DL-ISR schematic and KCF, while its contributions to practice are based on its practical guidelines for executing DL-based projects. Abstract: Employing customer information from one of the world’s largest airline companies, we develop a price elasticity model (PREM) using machine learning to identify customers likely to purchase an upgrade offer from economy to premium class and predict a customer’s acceptable price range. A simulation of 64.3 million flight bookings and 14.1 million email offers over three years mirroring actual data indicates that PREM implementation results in approximately 1.12 million (7.94%) fewer non-relevant customer email messages, a predicted increase of 72,200 (37.2%) offers accepted, and an estimated $72.2 million (37.2%) of increased revenue. Our results illustrate the potential of automated pricing information and targeting marketing messages for upselling acceptance. We also identified three customer segments: (1) Never Upgrades are those who never take the upgrade offer, (2) Upgrade Lovers are those who generally upgrade, and (3) Upgrade Lover Lookalikes have no historical record but fit the profile of those that tend to upgrade. We discuss the implications for airline companies and related travel and tourism industries. Collapse

Abstract: Although building a 360-degree comprehensive view of a customer has been a long-standing goal in marketing, this challenge has not been successfully addressed in many marketing applications because fractured customer data stored across different “silos” are hard to integrate under “one roof” for several reasons. Instead of integrating customer data, in this article we propose to integrate several domain-specific partial customer views into one consolidated or composite customer profile using a Deep Learning-based method that is theoretically grounded in Kolmogorov’s Mapping Neural Network Existence Theorem. Furthermore, our method needs to securely access domain-specific or siloed customer data only once for building the initial customer embeddings. We conduct extensive studies on two industrial applications to demonstrate that our method effectively reconstructs stable composite customer embeddings that constitute strong approximations of the ground-truth composite embeddings obtained from integrating the siloed raw customer data. Moreover, we show that these data-security preserving reconstructed composite embeddings not only perform as well as the original ground-truth embeddings but significantly outperform partial embeddings and state-of-the-art baselines in recommendation and consumer preference prediction tasks. Abstract: Forecasting online product sales is essential for retailers and e-commerce platforms, but it can be challenging owing to the complex dynamics and mixed trends in sales data. Popular end-to-end approaches tend to capture spurious correlations in historical data, whereas two-stage approaches that decompose time series and make separate predictions often result in error accumulation. To address these issues, we propose PoissonGP, a novel Bayesian model that employs a non-homogeneous Poisson process with a Gaussian process prior for sales pre­ diction. PoissonGP can capture complex patterns in data with multiple trends and manage distribution shifts caused by changes in long-run sales. Additionally, it incorporates forecast uncertainty and provides interpret­ ability for building efficient and visual decision support systems. Experimental results on several synthetic and empirical datasets suggest that PoissonGP outperforms existing approaches, making it a promising tool for ecommerce platforms. Collapse

Abstract: Popular online business directory (OBD) platforms, such as Yelp and TripAdvisor, depend on voluntarily user-submitted data about various businesses to assist consumers in finding appropriate options for transactions. Yet the crowdsourced nature of such data restricts the availability of attribute values for many businesses on the platform. Crowdsourced data often suffer serious completeness and timeliness constraints, with negative implications for key stakeholders such as users, businesses, and the platform. We thus develop a novel, deep learning–based imputation method, premised in institutional theory, to estimate missing attribute values of individual businesses on an OBD platform. The proposed method leverages a deep model architecture and considers both inter-business and inter-attribute relationships for imputations. An application to a Yelp data set reveals our method's greater imputation effectiveness relative to prevalent methods. To illustrate the method's practical utilities and values, we further examine the efficacy of business recommendations empowered by its imputed business attribute values, in comparison with those enabled by data imputed by benchmark methods. The results affirm that the proposed method substantially outperforms benchmarks for imputing missing attribute values and empowers more effective business recommendations. This study addresses crucial, prominent completeness and timeliness constraints in crowdsourced data on OBD platforms and offers insights for downstream applications that can improve user experiences, firm performance, and platform services.
