Abstract: Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) have the power to influence lecturers’ practices in the classroom and to improve students’ learning. Many ITS provide standardized analytical methods to evaluate classroom performance or the results of the exercises. But they lack more sophisticated, flexible and individual analyses. This paper presents an e-learning Analytics Tool (EAT) for an ITS that provides a dashboard with key figures and a flexible analytics board (FAB). This enables lecturers to analyze students’ performance in detail and identify misconceptions. For instance, the FAB allows us to classify student solutions, reveal conceptual errors in exercises, and analyze each part of an exercise. By this, common mistakes can be identified, and tailored feedback can be given to the students. Following the design science approach, the platform is designed in a general way so that it can be used for different types of exercises (e.g., Math, Excel, SQL). To assess the artifact, we conducted group interviews with German University lecturers from various courses. The results show that lecturers require a good overview of the submitted student solutions to provide timely feedback. They also appreciate the flexible analytics tool for detailed analyses of student solutions to understand student mistakes better. The employed architecture allows general analyses of exercises and the content of students’ solutions. In addition, the EAT is not bound to a specific kind of exercise, but can cope with different kinds like SQL and Excel. Collapse

Abstract: IT architecture forms the digital core of contemporary organisations; thus, architecture work directly concerns the transformation of these organisations. The literature on architecture work and architecting has identified the principles, styles and characteristics that define the policy ideals of architecture work and has demonstrated how these drivers play out in real-world projects. With an in-depth case study, we add to this literature by investigating the multilevel challenges that architects address in transforming large-scale infrastructures and how major challenges come to the surface during the architecting process. Our empirical evidence comes from our longitudinal investigation in a large health region in Norway. We offer two contributions. First, identification and a rich description of three modes of architecting framed as functional, spatial and temporal dualities. Second, we integrate the empirical data into a process model and theorise how contextual and professional drivers are transformed through the architecting modes and form the actual results. Collapse

Abstract: Cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, are digital currencies operating on a peer-to-peer network. Cryptocurrencies rely on consensus algorithms for transaction validation and network security. Ethereum recently replaced its proof-of-work (PoW) consensus algorithm with a proof-of-stake (PoS) algorithm on September 15, 2022. This research aims to study the following research question: Does changing from PoW to PoS consensus increase price and transaction volume? To answer this question, we implemented synthetic control methods to compare the pre-and post-treatment trends of the price and volume of Ethereum against a synthetic counterfactual. The result of our analysis suggests that Ethereum shifting from PoW to PoS had a positive effect on its price and a non-significant negative effect on transaction volume. Price increasing relative to the synthetic counterfactual is promising for convincing other PoW blockchains that a switch to PoS may lead to increased investment opportunities while decreasing the environmental impact. Abstract: Multi-sided platforms must make decisions on both pricing and engineering investment and must continually adjust them as the platform scales over its lifecycle. Engineering investments can be allocated to features that improve a platform's standalone value, social features to take advantage of same-side network effects, or integration tools and boundary resources to facilitate third-party content creation. Guidance in the academic or practitioner literature is not granular. Moreover, relevant normative economic models that consider externalities are rarely dynamic. Hence, there is a gap in knowledge about how to best balance tradeoffs between different strategic decisions throughout the entire platform lifecycle. To begin to address this gap, we explore normative strategies for coordinating pricing and engineering investment decisions on a continuous basis under different ecosystem conditions. We build a simulation model informed by economics and marketing theory and perform extensive sensitivity analyses on key parameters in different ecosystem scenarios over a multi-period lifecycle. We find that pricing and investment strategies must continuously change to perform optimally. In particular, strategies that are most effective at launch often differ from those that are most effective during scaling as well as those most effective at maturity. We also find that the optimal strategy depends strongly on the monetization model and market aversion to price changes. Lastly, we specifically examine four different industry segments: mobile platforms, social media, the sharing economy, and business-to-business. The results provide evidence that the trajectory of platform pricing and investment strategies should greatly differ depending on industrial context. Collapse

Abstract: Businesses that follow the trend of flexible work arrangements with home offices and hybrid work models are increasingly utilizing desk sharing to allocate available desks in the office efficiently. In this work, we investigate the utilization of flexible work arrangements, specifically the implementation of desk sharing in hybrid work models. To optimize the occupancy rate of shared desks and simultaneously meet demand and save costs, it is crucial to have real-time knowledge of their availability which can be obtained by recording occupancy over time. We utilize the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology to develop a prototype solution for real-time monitoring of shared desks occupancy in hybrid work models. The proposed prototype is a low-cost solution utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technology consisting of a motion sensor and accelerometer that collect occupancy data and transmit it via Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN). Signal processing utilizing cloud computing is employed to enhance the quality and accuracy of the data, which is subsequently made available through a web dashboard. The prototype’s effectiveness is evaluated through a small-scale pilot deployment in a real-world environment over a two-week period, with reference values obtained during periods of non-use serving as a benchmark for the evaluation. Abstract: An online social network is a key platform through which innovation diffuses. To learn about innovativeness, we simultaneously investigate two Twitter networks, the relationships network, following-follower relationships, and the activity network, the flow of tweets. Specifically, the innovativeness relations to the networks' indegree and outdegree, the volume of platform use, and the profile's age. The more active and central the user, the earlier the adoption. Innovativeness increases with the number of followers only when at least several of them adopt the innovation. Surprisingly, having more followees is linked to later engagement with the innovation. This association is mediated by the number of adopters' followees. Those who created a Twitter profile later are also more likely to adopt innovations later. This study is novel in distinguishing between the two networks and analyzing their interactions. Its contribution lies in identifying the innovativeness of users in an online social network platform diffusion. Collapse

Abstract: Online climate change activism is growing. However, its effectiveness is not yet firmly established. One of the challenges is for citizens to make sense of the vast amount of data to understand the impact of specific behaviors. The aggregation of publicly available information in a comprehensible and playful manner could potentially trigger effective evidence-based activism. However, it is not yet clear if and how such an intervention works. In this paper, we make a preliminary analysis of a use case of such an approach by investigating the @CelebJets phenomena, which automatically tracks and shares the private jet flights of celebrities on Twitter. Our analysis demonstrates that this approach can elicit user engagement and provide pertinent material for the press, potentially leading to a shift in behavior, particularly among celebrities who are promoting sustainability. Abstract: Pricing and sales volumes for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have seen a meteoric rise and fall in recent years. Partially because of a loss of faith in the true values of NFT assets. Wash trading has emerged to artificially inflate asset prices and trading volumes of NFTs. This not only endangers the integrity of NFT markets but also raises doubts about the authenticity of NFT values. Previous research has identified wash trading actors with techniques such as cyclical trading. Many of the presented techniques, however, can be associated with flaws concerning obviousness or feasibility with constrained capital resources. We propose a method to identify a more intricate and concealed form of wash trading called self-financed trading. Our approach identifies suspicious activities by tracking cash and asset flows between blockchain addresses. This enables us to reveal networks of wash trading designed to reap marketplace rewards or insinuate demand to drive up prices. Collapse

Abstract: Polarization, which refers to the formation of opposing groups based on peoples' beliefs and opinions, is a phenomenon that has existed for eons. However, in the recent past, social media has caused a quantum change in the dynamics of polarization since beliefs may change almost instantaneously on social media because of unfolding events. We investigate social media communication that has resulted in polarized opinions among individuals prior to, during, and after a crisis event; the January 6th US Capitol riots. Analyses of the dominant narratives on Twitter surrounding the incident reveal a high level of polarization throughout the unfolding of the event, with increased polarization possibly attributable to the onset of the crisis. We also observe the evolution of the phenomenon: as the event unfolds, polarization changes. We suggest that understanding the evolution of polarization is important for timely crisis resolution by crisis managers. We utilize three measures, spread, distinctness and regionalization, to examine polarization during a crisis. Based on these measures our findings indicate that social media discussions exhibit an increase in the negative sentiment during the crisis as compared to precrisis, but there is a rebound in terms of positive sentiments emerging in the post crisis period. Also, the results signal reduced diversity in discussion topics during the crisis as compared to pre and post-crisis. Collapse
