Abstract: Problem-solving in complex environments requires a cognitively demanding search for task solutions. Managing this search process presents a major challenge in organizations. We contribute to the literature on this topic by providing new evidence on the cognitive antecedents that shape how individuals search when engaged in complex problem-solving tasks. We present results from three laboratory studies, wherein 335 individuals solved a complex task. In doing so, they generated behavioral data coupled with survey-based measurements of the individuals’ cognitive styles and performance-based tests of their cognitive abilities. Our data analysis contributes to the current literature by documenting systematic heterogeneity in the persistence and distance of search that can be explained by the participants’ level of creativity, attention to detail, and executive functions. We extend the research on the microfoundations of adaptive search by linking cognitive antecedents with a complex search task, widening our insight into what search behavior certain cognitive microfoundations lead to, and showing how managers can more effectively shape organizational search.History: This paper has been accepted for the Organization Science Special Issue on Experiments in Organizational Theory.Supplemental Material: The online appendix is available at https://doi.org/10.1287/orsc.2023.1654. Abstract: Innovation in the public sector plays an important role in improving the quality of public services and addressing economic and societal challenges. Most of the previous research on innovations has focused on the private sector. How organizations may achieve ambidexterity for innovations in the public sector characterized by unique constraints has been largely underexplored. Platforms have emerged as key components in organizations’ ap proaches to innovation. Using an empirical study in a public sector organization, this study identifies a platformbased approach that can be used to achieve ambidexterity in balancing exploitative and exploratory innovations in the public sector. Organizations facing constraints pertaining to structure, risk, and value may benefit from considering their product/service development, process management, and value formulation through this approach. This study also identifies practices in platform development, appropriation, and control that contributed to the success of the platform-based approach. Collapse

Abstract: Although big data analytics (BDA) does enhance innovation performance, it remains unclear whether BDA contributes more or less than traditional marketing analytics (TMA) to firm innovation. This study tests hy potheses based on data collected from multiple sources by using four-wave survey and archival data from 201 firms. The results indicate that BDA has a stronger positive effect on new product development (NPD) perfor mance than TMA, over time. However, TMA, when coupled with exploitative innovation strategy, has a stronger positive effect on NPD performance than if coupled with exploratory innovation strategy. Conversely, BDA, when coupled with exploratory innovation strategy, has a stronger positive effect on NPD performance than if coupled with exploitative innovation strategy. Collapse

Abstract: In today's data-centric era, organizations increasingly aim to operate more data-driven and therefore engage in digital transformations toward becoming a data-driven organization (DDO). To govern such transformations, top managers develop digital transformation strategies (DTS) characterized by different organizational ambidexterity approaches. This study analyzes how such DTS influence the process and (intermediate) outcomes of organizations' digital transformations toward becoming a DDO by studying two organizations undertaking such DDO transformations using the concept of organizational ambidexterity as a theoretical lens. On this empirical basis, we find that DTS characterized by different organizational ambidexterity approaches lead to different transformation processes and (intermediate) outcomes. Thereby, this study contributes to existing academic literature in the field of DDOs and DTS, as such transformation journeys toward becoming a DDO have not been studied in its entirety yet. Furthermore, our paper offers practical guidance for top managers to develop and implement a DTS suitable for their organization. Collapse

Abstract: Organizational culture plays a paramount role in the success and outcomes of Business Process Management (BPM) initiatives. So far, academic research has primarily focused on the cultural values supporting exploitative BPM, and to a greater extent in the private sector. In this study, we aim to uncover the cultural context in the international public sector, underpinning the explorative dimension of BPM, as well as the necessary capabilities to balance explorative and exploitative process management practices. The latter is defined as BPM ambidexterity. For this purpose, we have conducted case studies in European Union (EU) public sector organizations because this governmental level stimulates digital innovation and is quite varied while not being limited to a single country. Our main contribution is a model of cultural values supporting exploratory BPM, called FADE (i.e., values related to Failure allowance, Agility, Disruptiveness, and Ecosystems). Collapse

Abstract: Digital servitization is of increasing concern for manufacturers to exploit the potentials of digitalization with new service offerings. In this context, substantial changes within a firm´s capabilities, processes and mindset of employees need to be considered. To better understand such changes, we carve out behavioral logics of manufacturers undergoing digital servitization. An alternate template research design is used to discover the entrepreneurial logics of effectuation, causation, and bricolage. For this purpose, we conducted 13 semi-structured interviews with experts from the German manufacturing industry. Our results show that firms approaching digital servitization via hybrid decision logics. Causation can be found within all organizations. Effectuation is integrated to various degrees. Against it, the bricolage-logic is barely present. In total, the results provide new insights for digital servitization and for organizational ambidexterity. Collapse

Abstract: In any human endeavors, a sound strategy constitutes a key success factor. In this essay, we discuss the concept of strategy, its manifestation in digital transformation, and a strategy for managing project front-end activities in digital transformation. More precisely, we first highlight the multidimensional nature of strategy, then different strategies found in digital transformation. Finally, we propose a metaphor with a potential to enhance the understanding of strategy for managing project front-end activities in digital transformation through a vivid description of related phenomena. Overall, this essay advances knowledge in Information Systems through a multidimensional and creative conceptualization of strategy. Abstract: Aspiring to close capability gaps for digital innovation, industrial-age incumbents often decide to establish Digital Innovation Units (DIUs), which are separated from the main organization both geographically and with regard to their techniques, skills and working styles. This separation is problematic as digital innovation in these contexts is about the combination of digital and physical components. The organizational separation enables a distinct focus yet hinders collaboration. To resolve this paradoxical situation, incumbents need to transcend mere separation. As prior research falls short in explaining how DIUs and main organizations can cooperate symbiotically, we conducted a Delphi survey involving 23 automotive experts to discover some answers. From the specific findings, we abstract three meta-patterns: maintaining structural autonomy, strategic boundary spanning and operational synchronizing. We synthesize these meta-patterns into a multi-layered organizing model and relate our findings to paradox and ambidexterity theory. Abstract: Information systems (IS) projects represent key building blocks of large-scale digital transformation and innovation initiatives. As a result, IS projects have become increasingly ambitious in terms of both goals and scale, making it even more challenging for managers to exercise control over such projects. While prior research focused primarily on the direct and interactive effects of formal and informal control modes on IS project performance, recent research directs attention to the importance of considering project managers’ control styles (i.e., how managers interact with controlees to enact controls). Corresponding studies also indicate that “either/or” control approaches – as opposed to “both/and” approaches – are no longer viable in today’s complex environment. As such, our study draws on an ambidexterity perspective to theoretically develop and empirically test the direct and interactive effects of control-style ambidexterity on IS project performance. Using matched-pair data from 146 IS projects (from 146 high-tech firms), we find that control-style ambidexterity improves project performance – directly and in combination with both formal and informal control. The study results contribute novel insights regarding the effective control of IS projects in the digital era and help explain mixed findings in prior literature, thereby facilitating continued theory development in the research area. Abstract: This case study explores ambidextrous practices of a complementor firm within a Microsoft-owned digital platform ecosystem (DPE). We draw on organizational ambidexterity and social mechanisms as lenses to analyze how a complementor deals with paradoxical practices of exploration and exploitation in the context of a DPE. By identifying deep structures and surface structures and their related social mechanisms we shed light on the role of ambidextrous complementors in a DPE. Our analysis implies that the identified social mechanisms illustrate how the complementor creates new ideas with other DPE actors to nurture capability development (exploration) and how these ideas are transformed into practice (exploitation). In addition, our findings imply that the complementor’s support of a platform contributes to an increased commitment to the platform owner. Collapse
