Abstract: This paper improves upon recent game-theoretic deceptive signaling schemes for cyber defense using the insights emerging from a cognitive model of human cognition. One particular defense allocation algorithm that uses a deceptive signaling scheme is the peSSE (Xu et al., 2015). However, this static signaling scheme optimizes the rate of deception for perfectly rational adversaries and is not personalized to individuals. Here we advance this research by developing a dynamic and personalized signaling scheme using cognitive modeling. A cognitive model based on a theory of experiential-choice (Instance-Based Learning Theory; IBLT), implemented in a cognitive architecture (Adaptive Control of Thought – Rational; ACT-R), and validated using human experimentation with deceptive signals informs the development of a cognitive signaling scheme. The predictions of the cognitive model show that the proposed solution increases the compliance to deceptive signals beyond the peSSE. These predictions were verified in human experiments, and the results shed additional light on human reactions towards adaptive deceptive signals. Collapse

Abstract: Creativity is important to all kind of organizations, because creative capacity can help tackle complex challenges and navigate through the ambiguity of wicked problems. In Information Systems (IS) research, this topic is addressed by studies on creativity support systems (CSS). One promising approach is to provide (context related-) stimuli to individuals in order to inspire new and useful ideas. The relatedness of a stimuli, which means the degree to which a stimulus is related to a topic (i.e., to the creative task), is a vital characteristic. We investigated in the relationship between Wikipedia-based searching results (computational relatedness) and individual cognition (individual relatedness). Our initial findings show that there can be differences between individuals based on demographic variables. We further suggest a laboratory experiment in order to contribute to a CSS that takes individual relatedness and thus custom-fit stimuli into account. Collapse

Abstract: Research on training has traditionally viewed errors made by trainees as detrimental to learning. A great deal of effort has been devoted to finding effective ways of preventing errors from occurring during training. Recently, some researchers have adopted a different perspective: that errors may provide a learning opportunity for trainees. What has been investigated less is the specific mechanism through which errors can foster learning. The objective of our research was to investigate and possibly reconcile these differing viewpoints by examining the error recovery process. We found that, in some situations, errors enhance learning when the trainee adopts an error recovery process that emphasizes the goal structure of the task. We suggest several ways of coaching trainees in training sessions to adopt such error recovery strategies. Collapse
