Abstract: Although studies show that organizations engaged in controversial actions often aim to minimize the release of threatening information, scholars know relatively little about what may prompt organizations to increase transparency in these situations. In this study, we focus on support from public opinion as a condition that may influence the disclosure of sensitive performance information to the public. Using the second Iraq War as an empirical context, we focus on the extent to which public officials—Pentagon spokespersons—release and frame information about war performance. This outcome is critical because the way in which organizations communicate their performance to outsiders has often been regarded as a key defensive impression management tactic. We hypothesize that high public support for the war will increase the likelihood that Pentagon officials release information about sensitive combat performance indicators in their press briefings and identify contingencies, such as adversity and organizational spokespersons’ power, that moderate this relationship. We also explore whether high public support decreases the strategic use of alternate performance frames that emphasize metrics that signal progress toward a desirable end state. Using a unique data set based on the coding of press briefings, public opinion data, and other public sources, we find support for several of our hypotheses. We discuss implications for understanding the relationship between public opinion and impression management and highlight the importance of extending this research to nongovernmental organizations. Abstract: Although services empowered by artificial intelligence (AI) have been demonstrated to provide reliable advice, users are often reluctant to follow this advice. One promising means to reduce this reluctance is increasing the degree to which users perceive accountability of the AI-enabled service (i.e., the system of AI, providers, and developers) for the provided advice. Drawing on the four core components of accountability theory (i.e., identifiability, expectation of evaluation, awareness of monitoring, and social presence), we designed four user-interface (UI) design artifacts. The results of a scenario-based factorial survey (N = 629) reveal that each UI design artifact raises users' perceived accountability of the AI-enabled service, which in turn influences users' intentions to follow the AI-enabled service's advice. These findings provide important theoretical and practical insights, as they demonstrate that accountability-based UI design artifacts can increase user acceptance of AI-enabled services via the degree to which users perceive the AI-enabled services accountable. Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis article focuses on the role of accountability within information management, particularly in cloud computing contexts. Key to this notion is that an accountable Cloud Provider must demonstrate both willingness and capacity for being a responsible steward of other people's data. More generally, the notion of accountability is defined as it applies to the cloud, and a conceptual model is presented related to the provision of accountability of cloud services. This allows a consideration of accountability at various different levels of abstraction, including the operationalisation of accountability. It is underpinned by fundamental requirements for strong accountability, which in particular are aimed at avoiding risks in the provision and verification of accounts (that include different types of accountability evidence and notifications, that may need to be provided to other cloud actors including data subjects, cloud customers and regulators). In addition, the article sketches what kind of tools, mechanisms and guidelines support this in practice, and discusses these in the light of the upcoming European Data Protection Regulation. Abstract: Content sharing platforms such as product review websites largely depend on reviewers' voluntary contributions. In order to motivate reviewers to contribute more, many platforms established incentive mechanisms, either reputation-based or financial. Yet most of the existing research has focused on reputations that are everlasting, such as badges and virtual points, or financial rewards where no evaluation exists about the users' contributed content, such as rebates. There is still a significant gap in our understanding of how incentives with reevaluation mechanism actually influence reviewers' behaviors such as their contribution levels, the opinion they express, and how they express. In this paper, we fill this gap using data collected from Yelp Elite Squad where reviewers with good reviewing history are awarded into the elite group and most importantly reevaluated each year. We draw from the accountability theory and conduct a difference-in-differences analysis to empirically study the effect of incentives with reevaluation mechanism on reviewers' behaviors in both short term and long term. The results show that in short term, reviewers significantly increase their contribution levels, become more conservative with lower percentage of extreme ratings, and also increase the readability of their reviews. In long term, they continue improving the quality of reviews though their numerical rating behaviors stabilize. Our research has significant implications for business models that rely on user contributions. Collapse

Abstract: In recent years, Technical Debt (TD) has received a significant amount of attention from research and practice due to its critical impacts on the software industry. Along similar lines as financial debt, the metaphor of TD explains the consequences of shortcuts taken or sub-optimal decisions made during the systems development lifecycle to speed up time to market and reduce development costs in the short-term. However, in the long-term, since TD has a negative influence on system quality, it may lead to a significant amount of extra maintenance costs. Despite its significant importance, especially with regard to information systems development (ISD), TD has been almost completely neglected by IS research. In addition, even in the software engineering discipline where TD has received a considerable amount of attention,there isa lack of research on TD ownership to explain who must be accountable for taking on TD. As a first step to address this gap, we conducted an exploratory field study and collected interview and survey data from software professionalsactive acrossindustrial domains.Using the Accountability Theory as a lens, we first confirmed the relationships among perceived accountability and occurrence of TD. Next,we performed Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to explore the presence and absence of factors leading to perceived accountability. Our study extends the accountability theory by applying it in an ISD context to examine TD ownership. We also use our QCA findings to uncover reasons behind the failure of firms to address developers’ expectation of evaluation which leads to TD. Our paper provides insights to managers and organizations that seek to improve resource investments for managing TD and avoiding low software quality. Collapse

Abstract: Online Social Media Deviance (OSMD) is one the rise; however, research in this area traditionally has lacked a strong theoretical foundation. Following calls to reveal the theoretical underpinnings of this complex phenomenon, our study examines the causes of OSMD from several novel angles not used in the literature before, including: (1) the influence of control imbalances (CIs) on deviant behavior, (2) the role of perceived accountability and deindividuation in engendering CI, (3) and the role of IT in influencing accountability and deindividuation. Using an innovative factorial survey method that enabled us to manipulate the IT artifacts for a nuanced view, we tested our model with 507 adults and found strong support for our model. The results should thus have a strong impetus not only on future SM research but also for social media (SM) designers who can use these ideas to further develop SM networks that are safe, supportive, responsible, and constructive. Abstract: Self-disclosure on social networking platforms has attracted attention in Information Systems (IS) research. While studies have connected individual beliefs such as perceived privacy, perceived benefits, and cost to Social Network Sites (SNS) use, less research has examined how characteristics of the social media platform itself shape SNS self-disclosure behaviors. This study conceptually develops and operationalizes a new construct—SNS transparency—that helps researchers to gain a better understanding of SNS-based selfdisclosure and offers insights into how to integrate transparency into social media platforms. We examine how SNS transparency affects user's self-disclosure of personal information. Abstract: Access-policy violations are a growing problem with substantial costs for organizations. Although training programs and sanctions have been suggested as a means of reducing these violations, evidence shows the problem persists. It is thus imperative to identify additional ways to reduce access-policy violations, especially for systems providing broad access to data. We use accountability theory to develop four user-interface (UI) design artifacts that raise users' accountability perceptions within systems and in turn decrease access-policy violations. To test our model, we uniquely applied the scenario-based factorial survey method to various graphical manipulations of a records system containing sensitive information at a large organization with over 300 end users who use the system daily. We show that the UI design artifacts corresponding to four submanipulations of accountability can raise accountability and reduce access policy violation intentions. Our findings have several theoretical and practical implications for increasing accountability using UI design. Moreover, we are the first to extend the scenario-based factorial survey method to test design artifacts. This method provides the ability to use more design manipulations and to test with fewer users than is required in traditional experimentation and research on human-computer interaction. We also provide bootstrapping tests of mediation and moderation and demonstrate how to analyze fixed and random effects within the factorial survey method optimally. Collapse
