Abstract: Cutting-edge technologies like big data analytics (BDA), artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, blockchain, and digital twins have a profound impact on the sustainability of the production system. In addition, it is argued that turbulence in technology could negatively impact the adoption of these technologies and adversely impact the sustainability of the production system of the firm. The present study has demonstrated that the role of technological turbulence as a moderator could impact the relationships between the sustainability the of production system with its predictors. The study further analyses the mediating role of operational sustainability which could impact the firm performance. A theoretical model has been developed that is underpinned by dynamic capability view (DCV) theory and firm absorptive capacity theory. This model was verified by PLS-SEM with 412 responses from various manufacturing firms in India. There exists a positive and significant influence of AI and other cutting-edge technologies for keeping the production system sustainable. Collapse

Abstract: We investigate the capacity of firms to acquire and assimilate artificial intelligence (AI) technology. AI has become a magic term for digital innovation in all industries worldwide. Therefore, we first focus on antecedents which foster the development of the capacity to acquire and assimilate AI. We hypothesize that strong capabilities with regard to process improvement and process innovation should help absorb AI. Second, we hypothesize a mediation relationship. We assume that the capability of a firm to innovate processes arises from the capability to improve processes and allows for a better AI absorption. With a quantitative study, we show the strength of the proposed model. Our empirical data collection reveals that process improvement has a positive impact on AI absorption, whereby process innovation capability is a mediator. We show that uncertainty avoidance matters: it directly and indirectly impacts process improvement, process innovation, and AI absorption. Collapse

Abstract: We examine the productivity implications of external knowledge flows obtained through an internet-mediated discussion forum in which IT professionals help one another solve problems related to the implementation and use of enterprise software. We extend elements of the absorptive capacity (ACAP) framework that have not previously been studied in the information systems (IS) literature to a new context. Consistent with prior results from the IS literature, we first show that IT spillovers—acquired through employees’ participation in this forum—only accrue to firms with prior related investments in enterprise software. We then demonstrate boundary conditions for ACAP based on characteristics of external knowledge affecting the ease of learning. Our results show that IT spillovers are not “free”; the ability to derive the value of IT spillovers through informal channels—such as online communities—critically depends on both prior related IT investments by the recipient firm and the novelty of external knowledge. Less intuitively, when knowledge originates from relatively novel or emergent domains, the role of prior related knowledge in absorbing spillovers becomes more important. Collapse

Abstract: Because health care delivery organizations (HDOs) increasingly rely on information technology (IT) in their delivery of health care services, recognition of how to exploit innovative electronic health (eHealth) technologies is crucial. We integrated absorptive capacity and governance perspectives to theorize that an HDO’s eHealth absorptive capacity is a dynamic IT capability to exploit eHealth innovations through the appropriate use of IT governance mechanisms. Drawing on absorptive capacity theory, we conceptualized an HDO’s eHealth potential absorptive capacity as consisting of eHealth entrepreneurial alertness and assimilation. We draw on the theo retical perspectives of IT governance to identify two modes of eHealth governance—relational and con tractual—and theorize how each of them affected the relationship between eHealth potential absorptive capacity and eHealth exploitation. Valid empirical data were gathered from 182 senior executive representatives in 111 HDOs; we discovered that (1) eHealth potential absorptive capacity can be formatively conceptualized as a second-order construct consisting of eHealth entrepreneurial alertness and eHealth assimilation, (2) eHealth potential absorptive capacity affects eHealth exploitation, and (3) relational governance significantly moderates the influence of eHealth potential absorptive capacity on eHealth exploitation. We discussed the implications of our work for how HDOs can govern eHealth initiatives to expand absorptive capacity for eHealth innovations and effectively exploit them. Collapse

Abstract: Advanced information technologies have enabled Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which have the potential to transform higher education around the world. Why are some institutions eager to embrace this technology-enabled model of teaching, while others remain reluctant to jump aboard? Applying the theory of absorptive capacity, we study the role of a university's educational IT capabilities in becoming an early MOOC producer. Examining the history of MOOC offerings by U.S. colleges and universities, we find that prior IT capabilities, such as (1) the use of Web 2.0, social media and other interactive tools for teaching and (2) experience with distance education and hybrid teaching, are positively associated with the early exploration of MOOCs. Interestingly, we also find that the effect of educational IT capabilities is moderated by social integration mechanisms and activation triggers. For example, when instructional IT supporting services are highly decentralized, educational IT capabilities have a greater impact on the probability of a university offering a MOOC. In addition, for colleges facing an adverse environment, such as those experience a decline in college applications, the effect of IT capabilities on the exploration of MOOCs is much stronger. Abstract: Open and closed approaches to innovation each pose different challenges, resulting in a dilemma for firms – which should be the preferred approach to IT-enabled innovation? Challenges related to innovation are particularly salient for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are technologically deficient and reliant on government support. We examine how IT for Closed Innovation and IT for Open Innovation compare in helping SMEs overcome technological deficiencies and government support deficiencies to achieve innovation. Drawing on absorptive capacity theory, we hypothesize that IT for Closed Innovation has stronger attenuating effect than IT for Open Innovation on the negative influence of technological deficiency on innovation. In contrast, we hypothesize that IT for Open Innovation has stronger attenuating effect than IT for Closed Innovation on the negative influence of government support deficiency on innovation. Empirical analysis of 389 SMEs in Mexico supports our hypotheses. Implications for theory and practice are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Collaborating with a partner in a distant area is widely endorsed in practice as a means for inspiring novel innovations. However, empirical evidence also reports significant innovation efficiency challenges when working with distant partners due to differences in technical knowledge domain differences. In this study, we conducted a multi-method approach by using a case study of 30 interviews to develop three information technology (IT)-enabled inter-firm knowledge capabilities and testing the research model with field survey data from 258 firms. The findings of this research confirm our hypotheses that IT-enabled inter-firm knowledge exploration capability and IT-enabled inter-firm knowledge exploitation capability can help embrace the benefits of product effectiveness while IT-enabled social integration capability surmount process efficiency challenges inherent in collaboration with distant partners. This study adds a much-needed perspective to the IT and innovation literature and offers practical suggestions for firm managers to mindfully design and deploy IT resources in collaborative innovation projects. Abstract: Previous research has predominantly taken a social network perspective suggesting that building more network connections or becoming deeply embedded in a network provides a better position to access network knowledge in open source software communities.This perspective implicitly assumes that accessed network knowledge automatically gets absorbed and transferred to projects, so that building more and deeper network connections is beneficial: Drawing from an absorptive capacity perspective, this research challenges such conventional wisdom, arguing instead that the benefits depend on a project’s absorptive capacity. Network connections provide access to external knowledge in the community; the absorption and transfer of this new knowledge require appropriate internal knowledge and developer roles. With longitudinal data collected from 4,518 open source software development projects hosted at SourceForge, the authors show that knowledge breadth (depth) helps with the absorption of external knowledge achieved from network depth (breadth), but it inhibits the absorption of external knowledge obtained from network breadth (depth). Further, developer roles (e.g., bridge members, role diversity) can mitigate the negative consequences of suboptimal combinations and facilitate effective transfers of absorbed external knowledge across and within projects. These findings provide important theoretical and managerial implications formanaging network connections, knowledge, and developer roles in open source software communities. Collapse

Abstract: To better address social concerns, many companies embrace CSR strategies that are believed to exert a profound influence on firm performance. However, limited research explores whether and how IT plays a role in various types of CSR initiatives. To shed light on this question, we posit how well the firms leverage CSR-related knowledge for value creation heavily depends on their IT-enabled absorptive capacities, which strongly enable knowledge-related processes. Drawing upon the theory of absorptive capacity, we further theorize distinct types of CSR initiatives need to be complemented by different ITenabled absorptive capacities to enhance firm performance. To test our hypotheses, we have collected detailed archival panel data of the S&P 500 companies and mapped their IT-enabled absorptive capacities to specific IT applications. Our research will not only contribute to the ongoing debate on the business value of CSR by justifying IT-enabled capabilities as significant but long-neglected contingencies, it will also highlight the importance of strategic use of IT to create firm value.
