Abstract: We examine how online searches lead to judgment formation in two contexts where statements are negated differently. In one context, a statement (of the form "if P then Q") is negated using "not" (as in "if P then not Q"), while in the other context, it is negated using a different term or phrase (as in "if P then R"). We show that online searches to find information about the validity of this statement generate different results in these contexts. Our findings contribute to extant work on online searches by suggesting that when individuals test the validity of a statement using search engines, their searches lead to categorically different results contingent on the search context. From a practical standpoint, we make recommendations to search engine developers and content providers so online searches generate more inclusive results. Collapse

Abstract: A key challenge faced by entrepreneurs is financing the venture for which equity crowdfunding presents an alternative with relatively low entry barriers. While it has recently been shown that perceived personality traits of the entrepreneur can impact crowdfunding success, so far, little is known about which perceived personality traits drive funding success in the context of sustainable ventures, which this study explores. To answer this question, through the lens of asymmetric information, we use quantitative regression analysis of U.S.-based equity crowdfunding projects. Overall, our preliminary results suggest an interaction between sustainability and the negatively perceived personality trait (neuroticism) on equity crowdfunding funding success. Further, we replicate recent findings on the role of negatively perceived personality traits in crowdfunding. This study contributes to our knowledge of the role of the entrepreneur's perceived personality and communication in successfully financing sustainable ventures via equity crowdfunding, bringing us closer to co-creating sustainable digital futures. Abstract: Initial coin offerings (ICOs) and initial exchange offerings (IEOs) are distinct blockchain-based token offerings. Following multiple frauds associated with decentralized and unregulated ICOs, IEOs are emerging as a novel pathway that relies on centralized crypto exchange platforms acting as intermediaries. However, the question as to how this shift affects fundraising processes in what has traditionally been a decentralized environment remains unresolved. We here address this issue by empirically comparing the performance of ICOs and IEOs through the lens of signaling theory, focusing specifically on the impact of social media information across 305 token offerings (ICOs and IEOs). Our work introduces IEOs and explains how and why the volume and sentiment of social media signals may serve as predictors of fundraising performance. We furthermore find that the impact of these electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) media signals is reduced in the case of IEOs—in the presence of a central cryptocurrency exchange platform mediator. We delineate implications for investors, ventures, platform providers, and regulators alike. Collapse

Abstract: A board of directors (BOD) plays a critical governance and strategic oversight role in an organization; acting as a fiduciary for shareholders, advising strategic decision making, and providing supportive resources and information to key decision makers. Especially critical is the role and contribution of corporate governance in guiding firm innovation. Such guidance has implications for investment in new products and services. In this paper, we examine the synergistic relationship between a firm’s BOD and technology and R&D inputs to innovation. We focus on the influence of the social capital of a BOD on different types of innovation. Our longitudinal findings show IT, R&D, and BOD social capital individually contribute to innovation performance, reflected in exploitative and exploratory innovation productivity. Moreover, BOD social capital enhances innovation enabled by IT activities. However, the combination of R&D activities and dimensions of BOD social capital leads to both negative and positive innovation performance. Collapse

Abstract: Task instructions are seeker-generated content aiming to disclose information and persuade solvers to participate in crowdsourcing contests. There are various writing strategies for task instructions, with different levels of informativeness and persuasiveness for solvers. This work examines how requirement-oriented and rewardoriented strategies affect solver participation. The empirical results reveal a U-shaped relationship between the usage of restrictive words and the number of participants. In contrast, an inverted U-shaped relationship is found between terminology usage and participation. Emphasizing intrinsic and extrinsic rewards through issuerelevant information statements and emotional appeals also proves to be effective in motivating solvers’ involvement. Collapse

Abstract: Implicit personality representations play a crucial role in shaping how investors perceive entrepreneurs and subsequently invest in their projects. We investigate the relationship between perceived Big Five personality signals and funding success utilizing a sample of 709 US-based equity crowdfunding campaigns. We find that higher conscientiousness, lower neuroticism, extraversion, and openness serve as funding success signals, significantly affecting both the funding level and number of investors attracted. This study extends the literature on the relationship between perceived personality signals and entrepreneurial finance by demonstrating the context-dependence of personality signals. The results fuel arguments that equity crowdfunding gears towards classical venture financing and is less comparable to reward-based crowdfunding. Collapse

Abstract: How do firm-specific factors impact strategic IT decisions such as IT outsourcing? Do non-financial factors in­ fluence these decisions? Whereas prior IT outsourcing research has focused primarily on normative, economic drivers of IT outsourcing, we find evidence of firm-specific non-financial factors influencing IT outsourcing decisions. We focus on the social influence perspective and use IT outsourcing decisions as exemplars of strategic IT decisions. Using a data sample of 77 outsourcing contracts from the automotive industry from 1995 to 2010, we find that even after controlling for financial factors, industry average levels of outsourcing can be used to distinguish strategic outsourcing behaviors of firms for IT enabled services. Firms with above-average levels of IT outsourcing tended to further increase outsourcing, a behavior consistent with perceived Red Queen competitive pressures. Firms with below-average levels of IT outsourcing showed no measurable trends of either increasing or decreasing outsourcing levels. This suggests that firm-specific factors influence IT outsourcing decisions and deviations from non-financial industry norms can indicate how firms make strategic IT decisions. Collapse

Abstract: The formation of IT companies and even of entire new technological ecosystems depends heavily on external financing. Consequently, the IS community has intensely studied various financing sources such as venture capital, initial public offerings or debt. Blockchain technology has led to the emergence of a system of decentralized finance (DeFi) which includes decentralized versions of equity and debt financing. In particular, equity-like fundraisings referred to as initial coin offerings (ICO) have received serious traction. In this paper, we investigate the role of user-generated content (UGC) for ICO success. Specifically, we leverage signaling theory to analyze how the activity on blogs and discussion forums is related to the amount of capital raised and the valuation in ICOs. We analyze data of 216 ICOs and provide first results indicating the importance of discussion forum activity for ICO success. Furthermore, we find that blogs seem less relevant than in traditional finance. Collapse

Abstract: When does information technology (IT)–business alignment matter most for leveraging IT investment for firm performance? Drawing on dynamic capabilities theory, we posit that firms that focus on IT–business alignment at the later stages (i.e., the IT delivery stage and IT change stage) of the IT lifecycle are better able to translate their IT investment into revenue than firms that focus on IT–business alignment at the early stage (i.e., IT investment planning stage) of the IT lifecycle. To test our theory, we leverage archival data from more than 120 firms in India that differ in terms of where in the IT lifecycle they focused on IT–business alignment as the key priority. We find that the positive relationship between IT investment and firm revenue is stronger for firms that focus on IT delivery alignment or IT change alignment than for firms that focus on IT investment planning alignment. In addition, we find that at higher levels of IT investment, firms that focus on IT change alignment or IT delivery alignment have higher revenue than firms that focus on IT investment planning alignment, whereas at low levels of IT investment, firms that focus on IT investment planning alignment outperform firms that focus on IT delivery alignment or IT change alignment. Overall, the study contributes by documenting that IT–business alignment at the IT delivery stage and IT change stage of the IT lifecycle are more critical for leveraging IT investment for firm performance than IT–business alignment at the IT investment planning stage. Abstract: Online to offline (O2O) is defined as e-commerce that combines searching and booking products or services online, and consumption in brick-and-mortar stores. Both China and other countries have witnessed the rise of O2O e-commerce platforms in recent years. This paper explores this rapid development from the supply side of O2O e-commerce platforms. Drawing upon the utilities roles of digital platforms and resource dependence theory, we propose and validate hypotheses on the relationships between platform choice and suppliers’ efficiency, using cinemas as an example. The findings support the significant and positive impact of platform choice on cinemas’ efficiency. Furthermore, we find that the more platforms a cinema chooses to link with, the higher efficiency the cinema will achieve. Our empirical results partially support that vertical integration has a negative impact on the relationship between platform choice and suppliers’ efficiency. This study enhances the understanding of the utilities roles of digital platforms and interaction between platform ecosystems and vertical integration. Collapse
