Abstract: Agile software development has become increasingly popular in recent years. Applying agile methods, companies expect flexible planning, early delivery of the software product, and a continuous improvement of the development process itself. However, in regulated environments the use of agile development is not yet common practice. In such environments, various regulatory requirements apply which affect the software development process. This paper examines the use of agile software development in the regulated medical device industry and explores reasons for using agile methods although their use is limited. We interviewed agile software development teams in three different companies using semi-structured interviews. Using grounded theory methodology, we identify reasons why companies are using agile methods, even though problems and barriers exist. Our main achievement is the development of four categories, which describe the benefit of agile software development in regulated environments. These categories are master complexity, reduce effort, improve usability, and promote collaboration. Collapse

Abstract: Mobile applications and mobile application development issues receive an increasing attention for practitioners and academics. The development of mobile applications is connected with a number of domain-specific issues and challenges (e.g., fulfilment of customer requirements or the prevention of high development costs). Consequently, the decision of the most effective process model to develop a mobile application plays a crucial role for software and mobile application development teams. With the help of a structured taxonomy-building methodology, we contribute to the extant literature by creating and presenting a taxonomy for process models and methodologies in software engineering and the mobile application development domain. The taxonomy enrich the existing knowledge base and can help mobile application developers to choose the most suitable process model or methodology. Based on our examination, our results indicate new directions for mobile application research and implications for mobile application development. Collapse

Abstract: Financial time series represent the stock prices over time and exhibit behavior similar to a data stream. Many works report on the use of data mining techniques to predict the future direction of stock prices and to discover patterns in the time series data to provide decision support for trading operations. Traditional optimization methods do not take into account the possibility that the function to be optimized, namely, the final financial balance for operations considering some stock, may have multiple peaks, i.e., be represented by multimodal functions. However, multimodality is a known feature of real-world financial time series optimization problems. To deal with this issue, this article proposes the PAA-MS-IDPSO-V approach (Piecewise Aggregate Approximation - Multi-Swarm of Improved Self-adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization with Validation). The proposed method aims to find patterns in financial time series to support investment decisions. The approach uses multi-swarms to obtain a better particle initialization for the final optimization phase since it aims to tackle multimodal problems. Furthermore, it uses a validation set with early stopping to avoid overfitting. The patterns discovered by the method are used together with investment rules to support decisions and thus help investors to maximize the profit in their operations in the stock market. The experiments reported in this paper compare the results obtained by the proposed model with the Buy-and-Hold, PAA-IDPSO approaches and another approach found in the literature. We report on experiments conducted with S&P100 index stocks and using the Friedman Non-Parametric Test with the Nemenyi post-hoc Test both with 95% confidence level. The results show that the proposed model outperformed the competing methods and was able to considerably reduce the variance for all stocks. Collapse

Abstract: Successful projects effectively manage their requirements. How the mix of different requirements evolves throughout a successful project life-cycle is poorly understood. Moreover, requirements practices may be changing, according to the authors of the New RE—a model of six critical requirements factors. The New RE focuses on leveraging existing components to create new functionality. This practice is also central to open-source development. Thus, to understand the proposed New RE model and its relationship to open-source development, in this study, we analyze over 200 projects from GitHub.com and compare them with a prior analysis of 31 projects from SourceForge. The results show that many of the proposed New RE factors are related to project attractiveness, which is important for open-source project success. Collapse

Abstract: Culture is an important topic in strategic information systems (IS) research, particularly because information technology (IT) projects are often accompanied by cultural challenges. While culture has been widely analyzed in this discipline, there is a lack of research that systematically examines the role of culture in strategic IS research. With a structured literature review, we investigate the relation patterns between culture, strategy, and IS-related concepts in terms of dependent, moderating, and independent variables and the research approach in terms of descriptive, normative, and prescriptive. Four different patterns emerge, each one closely related to specific forms of theorizing and corresponding research designs. Research streams focusing on descriptive explanations of culture’s role are rather exhausted. IS research that builds on a normative understanding of culture exists in selected areas, while theorizing on the prescriptive management of culture has been largely neglected despite the relevance of cultural challenges in IS projects. We derive areas for future research and present two themes that emerged in our study to demonstrate how descriptive and normative approaches can provide a foundation for research on the prescriptive management of culture in strategic IS projects: the management of cultural clashes and the management of cultural identity. Abstract: For decades, the identification and management of design requirements have been recurring challenges for software development projects. As development practices have proliferated, research on requirements engineering has struggled to keep pace. In this study, we analyze requirements engineering as a socio-technical computational task in which individuals and artifacts collaboratively “compute” the design requirements for a software solution. Using distributed cognition theory, we analyze the requirementsoriented activities of two successful systems development organizations, each representing a distinct pattern of requirements computation. Our analysis of the computational structures employed in these organizations reveals that they are heavily influenced by their distinct environmental conditions which are associated with divergent requirements knowledge characteristics. Building upon these findings, we develop a cognition-oriented contingency model of RE practices. We conclude with implications for the future theorizing of requirements computation. Collapse

Abstract: Requirements are often cited as one of the important factors in determining project success. Over the past 30 years requirements practice has changed. The new requirements engineering is facing new problems of complexity and continuous change. To address this New RE, researchers have proposed a new Six-V measurement model. This study provides an operationalization of the Six-V model and then uses it to analyze 31 open source projects. Abstract: This article frames GSS-enabled interventions as electronically supported discourses, designed and evaluated against a gold standard of ideal speech in a perfect communication environment. The objectives are, firstly, to develop a model of GSS-enabled interventions based on Habermas' theory of communicative action, and secondly, to apply the model as a problem-structuring device to the conceptual problem of designing the strategic evaluation of a comprehensive urban plan. The model, known as the VC (validity claims) Model, provides separate evaluative criteria for personal, social and technical aspects. The criteria for successful GSS-enabled interventions may be summarized as “personal commitment (validated by personal truthfulness or sincerity), to a social consensus (validated by rightness), for informed action (validated by objective truth)”. Detailed criteria (viz., goal, strategy, procedure, issues, problems) are developed for each type of validity claim and matched to the technologies available. The result is a detailed brief illustrating the design of a GSS-enabled strategic urban planning intervention, including a sample agenda for the GSS-supported meeting and the GSS tools that will be employed. Abstract: Providing customers with high quality of information is a key determinant for the success of the mobile Internet. This study aims at identifying the important dimensions of information quality in increasing user satisfaction and customer loyalty for mobile Internet services. In order to achieve this goal, we propose a general model of information quality with four dimensions. The dimensions were constructed by expanding prior research in information quality in order to reflect the characteristics of the mobile Internet. We hypothesize that the four dimensions are positively related to user satisfaction and customer loyalty, and that their relative importance varies according to user goals. To validate the hypothesized model, we conducted a large-scale Internet survey with mobile Internet users. The results indicate that some dimensions are more important than others in increasing user satisfaction and loyalty, and relative importance of the dimensions varies according to the intended goals of mobile Internet contents.
