Input control and its signalling effects for complementors' intention to join digital platforms

Abstract: Existing information systems (IS) research on platform control has largely focused on examining how input control (i.e., the mechanisms used to control platform access) affects complementors' intentions and behaviours after their decision to join a digital platform. Yet, our understanding of how input control is perceived before this decision and how such perceptions influence prospective complementors' intention to join a platform is still nascent. In this regard, our study views input control as a salient signal that shapes prospective complementors' expected benefits and costs (i.e., their performance and effort expectancy), and ultimately their decision to join a digital platform. Drawing on signalling theory and the antecedent-benefit-cost (ABC) framework, we conducted a randomized online experiment in the context of donation-based crowdfunding. The experiment results offer empirical support for this view by showing that input control has distinct and complex signalling effects for prospective complementors. In particular, our findings reveal curvilinear and competing signalling effects, with perceived input control increasing both performance expectancy (at a decreasing rate) and effort expectancy (at an increasing rate). Also, we find that performance expectancy linearly increases prospective complementors' intention to join a platform, whereas effort expectancy linearly decreases their intention to do so. These findings imply that the overall relationship between perceived input control and intention to join follows an inverted U-shape curve, which means that neither a low nor a high, but a moderate degree of perceived input control maximizes prospective complementors' intention to join. In sum, the results of our study provide novel and important insights into the signalling role that perceived input control plays in shaping prospective complementors' decision to join a digital platform. Abstract: Despite the increasing attention and research effort, how to protect sensitive information from shoulder surfing attacks is still under studied. Existing methods for protecting sensitive textual content on users' screens from shoulder surfing attacks have various limitations, including ineffectiveness, insufficient protection of sensitive information, low usability, and high cognitive workload. To address those limitations, this paper proposes, develops, and evaluates a new solution called "detection and labeling" (D&L), which uses NLP techniques to automatically detect and label sensitive information in the textual content. The labeled and hidden sensitive information is then read to users through their headphones upon their clicking a label. Evaluation results demonstrate that D&L improves protection, enhances usability, reduces users' cognitive workload, and allows faster browsing speed compared to the baseline methods. Collapse

Abstract: Advancements in computing power and foundational modeling have enabled artificial intelligence (AI) to respond to moral queries with surprising accuracy. This raises the question of whether we trust AI to influence human moral decision-making, so far, a uniquely human activity. We explored how a machine agent trained to respond to moral queries (Delphi, Jiang et al., 2021) is perceived by human questioners. Participants were tasked with querying the agent with the goal of figuring out whether the agent, presented as a humanlike robot or a web client, was morally competent and could be trusted. Participants rated the moral competence and perceived morality of both agents as high yet found it lacking because it could not provide justifications for its moral judgments. While both agents were also rated highly on trustworthiness, participants had little intention to rely on such an agent in the future. This work presents an important first evaluation of a morally competent algorithm integrated with a human-like platform that could advance the development of moral robot advisors. Collapse

Abstract: As the demand for data-driven decision making continues to rise, data science education (DSE) is becoming more and more crucial. The primary aim of the study was to understand how DSE may be scaled to nonscience participants, particularly using immersive DSE training sessions that culminated in a datathon (data science hackathon). The immersion programme was based on a project-based pedagogy informed by the CRoss Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) to integrate data science's multidisciplinary nature. Quantitative research was used with 107 datathon participants. Using various statistical measures including Exploratory Factor Analysis, the key results revealed that non-science participants who completed the immersions and datathon were sufficiently knowledgeable in all the CRISP-DM components as well as those who attended the full DSE programme. This means data science skills can be attained by non-STEM individuals by spending focused time in immersions on a specific data science concept. In this case, immersion sped up learning as the participants picked up new data science concepts while applying them simultaneously. The study recommends immersions through datathons to encourage transdisciplinary collaborative learning to massify data science skills. Collapse

Abstract: Keyword searches with brand names occur very commonly on search engines, enabling firms to infer not only when consumers are searching for them but also when consumers are searching for their competitors. This enables firms to generate traffic from search advertising by bidding not only on their own keywords but also on competitors’ keywords. The strategy of bidding on competitors’ keywords, known as competitive poaching, presents unique opportunities for academic research. In this research, we examine the factors that influence the effectiveness of competitive poaching, specifically the role of different ad copies and the type of competitor (poached brand) from which a brand is poaching. We also examine how the presence of sponsored ads from the poached brand affects competitive poaching. We collected data from two randomized field experiments, one with a business school in the Northeastern United States and the other one with a leading automobile dealership company, where these firms bid on keywords of competing brands and randomly display different types of ad copies in the sponsored search listings. We find that, when poaching on keywords of high-quality brands, ad copies that feature vertical differentiation are more effective than the control ad copies, which do not convey any differentiation or prescriptive messages. We also find that when poaching from low-quality brands, ad copies featuring horizontal differentiation perform better than the control ad copies. Finally, we show that the presence of the poached brand’s own ad has a positive association with the ad effectiveness of the poaching brand when that poached brand is high quality and a negative association when the poached brand is low quality. The academic and managerial contributions are also discussed. Collapse

Abstract: The current paper revisits and builds upon task demonstrability, which defines the criteria necessary for groups to choose a correct response if any member prefers that response. We identify boundary conditions of the current conceptualization of task demonstrability with respect to its use in understanding modern organizational teams. Specifically, we argue that, in its current form, task demonstrability is not optimally suited to studying ongoing teams in which member expertise varies and teams work to complete complex multifaceted tasks. To address this issue, we provide a revisited perspective on demonstrability. We specify the nomological network of revisited demonstrability and recast each of its criteria in a form that preserves the original intent of the construct, but has broader applicability, particularly to organizational contexts. We then discuss theoretical implications and managerial applications of the construct. Finally, noting that there is no standard assessment tool for demonstrability (original or revisited), we develop and validate a measure to facilitate future research. Collapse

Abstract: In this article we investigate the effects of negotiator trust and mediation on negotiating behavior and perceptions. We conduct three experiments in sequence with each succeeding study building on the results of the prior study. All used the same simulated dispute between a bar owner and customers. In the first experiment we found that negotiators who trusted the bar owner’s integrity moved further on an acceptable offer scale than those that did not. Results from a second experiment showed a strong main effect for trust but no difference for the presence vs. absence of a mediator. The third experiment also found strong trust effects but no differences among three mediation approaches; facilitative, directive or transformative. However, directive mediators were seen as less helpful and influential than both facilitative and transformative mediators. The trust findings were statistically mediated by a negotiator’s mindset, which consisted of perceptions of negotiation as a win-lose contest or problem-solving debate. These findings are discussed in terms of the power of trust and the value of main effects for advancing knowledge about negotiation and mediation. Collapse

Abstract: We propose a theoretical model based on the judge-advisor system (JAS) and empirically examine how algorithmic advice, compared to identical advice from humans, influences human judgment. This effect is contingent on the level of transparency, which varies with whether and how the prediction performance of the advice source is presented. In a series of five controlled behavioral experiments, we show that individuals largely exhibit algorithm appreciation; that is, they follow algorithmic advice to a greater extent than identical human advice due to a higher trust in an algorithmic than human advisor. Interestingly, neither the extent of higher trust in algorithmic advisors nor the level of algorithm appreciation decreases when individuals are informed of the algorithm's prediction errors (i.e., upon presenting prediction performance in an aggregated format). By contrast, algorithm appreciation declines when the transparency of the advice source's prediction performance further increases through an elaborated format. This is plausibly because the greater cognitive load imposed by the elaborated format impedes advice taking. Finally, we identify a boundary condition: algorithm appreciation is reduced for individuals with a lower dispositional need for cognition. Our findings provide key implications for research and managerial practice. Collapse

Abstract: Online retailers assume that customers expect speedy delivery. To ensure that customers receive at least part of the order sooner, online retailers use split deliveries, of smaller quantities, spread out over different dates. Yet this approach ignores that split deliveries may increase customers' hassle costs, because they have to receive multiple deliveries, which can harm important customer outcomes. Two experiments examine the research question of how delivery speed and split (vs. consolidated) deliveries interactively affect customers' order completion, satisfaction, and loyalty. Study 1 shows that, in the case of split deliveries, faster delivery does not positively affect these outcomes. Study 2 shows that a faster delivery positively affects these outcomes only if it also is consolidated; split deliveries generally have a negative effect. These results question the common practice of splitting deliveries; instead, they show that this practice can backfire. We discuss the implications of these findings for IS research. Collapse

Abstract: Online static ads are predominantly used to promote products. Typical static ads use both text and pictures to present products' information. While prior literature mainly studies the effects of ad content, there is a paucity of research exploring how the spatial relationship between ad text and picture affects consumers' attention to the ad. The current study focuses on a fundamental, yet under-studied design factor: the placement of ad text. Many advertisers argue that placing text on the ad picture is a great way to attract attention, while others think that text overlay reduces ad effectiveness. We plan to conduct a field experiment and two eye-tracking experiments to examine the effects of online ad text placement on consumer attention and ad effectiveness. The preliminary results suggest that online ads with text separate from pictures lead to longer attentional duration and greater effectiveness compared to ads with text embedded in the pictures.
