Abstract: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous companies have implemented telework to balance business continuity with employees’ safety. However, telework was not a widespread phenomenon in Japan until recently. Why is a geographically decentralized workstyle not as widespread in Japan as in other nations? In a previous study, based on collected samples from 529 Japanese companies, we used statistical analyses and clarified that the communication style aligned with Japanese collectivism seriously hinders telework. The present study used qualitative analysis to investigate how the communication style associated with Japanese collectivist culture hinders the introduction of telework. Finally, we concluded that if a non-Western cultural company introduces telework, it should remove the negative aspects of the communication style associated with collectivist culture to bring about organizational change that leads to a new organizational identity. Abstract: Corneal Ulcer, also known as keratitis, represents the most frequently appearing symptom among corneal diseases, the second leading cause of ocular morbidity worldwide. Consequences such as irreversible eyesight damage or blindness require an innovative approach that enables a distinction to be made between patterns of different ulcer stages to lower the global burden of visual disability. This paper describes a Convolutional Neural Network-based image classification approach that allows the identification of different types of Corneal Ulcers based on fluorescein staining images. With a balanced accuracy of 92.73 percent, our results set a benchmark in distinguishing between general ulcer patterns. Our proposed method is robust against light reflections and allows automated extraction of meaningful features, manifesting a strong practical and theoretical relevance. By identifying Corneal Ulcers at an early stage, we aid reduction of aggravation by preventively applying and consequently tracking the efficacy of adapted medical treatment, which contributes to IT-based healthcare. Abstract: Disaster management operations are information intensive activities due to high uncertainty and complex information needs. Emergency response planners need to effectively plan response activities with limited resources and assign rescue teams to specific disaster sites with high probability of survivors swiftly. Decision making becomes tougher since the limited information available is heterogenous, untimely and often fragmented. We address the problem of lack of insightful information of the disaster sites by utilizing image data obtained from smart infrastructures. We collect geo-tagged images from earthquake-hit regions and apply deep learning method for classification of these images to identify survivors in debris. We find that deep learning method is able to classify the images with significantly higher accuracy than the conventionally used machine learning methods for image classification and utilizes significantly lesser time and computational resources. The novel application of image analytics and the resultant findings from our models have valuable implications for effective disaster response operations, especially in smart urban settlements. Abstract: Motivated by the growing importance of research on blockchain applications, this paper conceptualizes the potential impact of blockchain enabled asset tokenization. Asset tokenization is the process of converting real-world assets to digital tokens and trading them fractionally based on a blockchain platform and its smart contract function. This research hypothesizes that tokenizing the asset increases its price by improving the democracy of the market and its liquidity, and eventually results in a price bubble, although it is not clear how long it will last. Furthermore, this impact is hypothesized to be greater on the previously lesser-known assets, because of the dominant investor sentiment and valuation subjectivity. Specifically, the art market is designated as a research context because blockchain applications has been expected to innovate the market by resolving its problems of centralization, inefficiency, and information asymmetry. Abstract: In social commerce, ethnic culture plays an important role in the content and quality perception of customer reviews. This study examined Japanese restaurant reviews in English at Yelp.com and those in Japanese at Yelp.co.jp from a cross-cultural perspective. Using bilingual text mining software, we demonstrate that Japanese customers have significantly different sentiment distribution patterns on four basic attributes of dining experience (food quality, service, ambiance, and price fairness) than Western customers. These findings shed insights on how review contents and ratings may vary between local and foreign customers at multi-national social commerce platforms. Abstract: This paper presents an application of online booking data, comprised of big data crawled from a hotel booking website to hotel revenue management. It is important to build a quantitative revenue management method for online hotel booking systems incorporating overbooking strategies, because of increasing numbers of bookings through online booking websites and last-minute cancellations, which cause serious damage to hotel management. We construct a quantitative overbooking model for online booking systems combined with customers’ choice behaviors estimated from the data. Firstly, we present the overbooking model for online booking systems. Secondly, we estimate the choice behaviors of the customers from the online booking data by a discrete choice model. Thirdly, combining the estimated discrete choice model with the theoretical overbooking model, we investigate the expected sales maximization problem where we numerically solve the optimal overbooking level and room charge. Finally, we provide numerical examples of the optimal overbooking strategies and room charges using online booking data of two major luxury hotels in Shinjuku ward, Tokyo. This method, which utilizes online booking data available by crawling from booking websites, helps hotels obtain an optimal room charge and overbooking level maximizing the expected sales. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines the effect of the loss leader strategy on profitable products in a multi-sided platform. We assess different effects of loss leaders according to their substitute versus complementary associations with profitable products. We collect a unique dataset containing individual-level transactions and product characteristics and conduct a difference-in-differences analysis along with propensity score matching at the sub-market level. The results suggest that the introduction of a substitute loss leader is negatively associated with the sales of profitable products, while complementary loss leaders have no significant effect on them. We also find that the impact of loss leaders can vary according to the price of related core projects. Our study contributes to the literature on multi-sided platforms by augmenting the current knowledge on product-level association. Collapse

Abstract: The post replying behavior in online communities (OCs) has garnered little consideration, even though the feedback behavior represents the central social dynamic of OCs and greatly determines the vibrancy of OCs. To fill this gap, this study aims to identify major sharing post-related variables that explain the heterogeneity in the post replying behavior in knowledge sharing OCs. The research model is validated through a panel dataset assembled from an online travel community. The results reveal that sharing post length and vividness, contributors’ expertise and degree centrality, and members’ social interactions have significant associations with the number of replying posts. Abstract: In order to resolve the scalability and handover performance issues of existing approaches, we propose a scalable mobility platform which is based on the hierarchical Distributed Hash Table (HDHT), referred to here as MoHiD, to provide host mobility through a hierarchical DHT. In MoHiD, the location information of the hosts is stored in the HDHT running on the MoHiD Access Router to provide mobility. In the HDHT, the storage level of each entry can be specified, which drastically reduces the handover delay by limiting the number of overlay hops occurring during the query processing steps. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of MoHiD, we used a commercial cloud to measure the entry query time of the HDHT on the global scale and constructed a testbed to measure the handover performance. The experimental results show that the HDHT query delay and the total handover delay are 16.7 ms and 115.9 ms, respectively, this providing evidence of rapid handovers. Collapse
