Factors influencing the acceptance of healthcare information technologies: A meta-analysis

Abstract: Healthcare information technologies (HIT) can address several challenges faced by healthcare systems. To benefit from the advantages HIT offer, users must first accept them. This meta-analysis synthesizes previous research on HIT acceptance. It uses data from 214 independent samples reported in 193 articles and 83,619 technology users from 33 countries. The study contributes to the HIT literature by (1) synthesizing the empirical findings on technology acceptance factors and combining them in a comprehensive model, (2) testing the mediating mechanisms of health technology acceptance, and (3) examining contextual differences. The study finds that HIT acceptance depends on various predictors proposed by the technology acceptance model and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology. These factors displayed strong indirect effects through effort expectancy, perceptions of the technology, performance expectancy, and attitudes toward using HIT. Studies overlooking these effects may underestimate the importance of various acceptance factors. Finally, the results suggest that technology acceptance varies across healthcare technologies (remote information systems [IS], wearables), users (staff/patients, age, voluntariness, experience), and locations (hospitals, healthcare systems, life expectancy in country). We also provide IS managers with guidance for improving technology acceptance in the healthcare industry to ensure efficient, high-quality services. Collapse

Abstract: Smart speakers have entered the market in recent years and have already been adopted by certain parts of the population. Although several studies have previously tried to explain some aspects of smart speaker adoption, there is still no common understanding in the literature about the crucial factors affecting their acceptance. Building on an extensive analysis of innovation adoption theories with a special focus on studies of voice-controlled technologies, the authors cover this research gap by constructing a research model for user acceptance factors of smart speakers and testing it empirically within a sample of current non-adopters in Germany. The results show that enjoyment, privacy concerns, usefulness and social influence may significantly predict the intention to use smart speakers. Moreover, system quality and complementarity of smart speakers with various apps and services are predictors of perceived usefulness. Collapse

Abstract: Digital transformation continues to profoundly impact employees in organizations in many industries. While past research has extensively investigated the impact of digital transformation on organizations, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of the factors that are relevant to examine how employees perceive digital transformation and its effects. One theory that explicitly has been built to account for a digital transformation in the past is the theory of the smart machine. To provide insights about relevant factors, we apply the theory of the smart machine and develop and evaluate an instrument to measure several of its key concepts for the first time. We build on established research guidelines to provide a 36-item survey instrument to measure the concepts Introduction of IT, Effects of automation, and Effects of informating. Abstract: The risk of insider threats grows with the size of the organization and the nature of the data that may be exposed. One such risk is the use of personal Internet to circumvent blocks on enterprise Internet access when the user has a legitimate reason to access the restricted site. In this paper we present a model to evaluate the impact risk perception has on the selection of personal or enterprise provided devices to conduct work related tasks as well as an instrument and indicators for measuring the components of the model. Abstract: The popularity of the big data domain has boosted corporate interest in collecting and storing tremendous amounts of consumers’ textual information. However, decision makers are often overwhelmed by the abundance of information, and the usage of text mining (TM) tools is still at its infancy. This study validates an extended technology acceptance model integrating information quality (IQ) and top management support. Results confirm that IQ influences behavioral intentions and TM tools usage, through perceptions of external control, perceived ease of use, and perceived usefulness; top management support also has a key role in determining the usage of TM tools. Abstract: Based on the technology acceptance model and technology–organization–environment framework, this study has developed a new model to explain the adoption of agricultural information technology (AIT) by farmer cooperatives from the combination perspective of individual and organization using four factors: cooperatives’ factors, environmental factors, technological factors, and leaders’ attitude towards AIT. Data was collected from a survey of farmer cooperatives and was analyzed using structural equation modelling. The model showed a good fit with findings indicating that the cooperatives’ and environmental factors positively influence the intentions of farmer cooperatives to adopt AIT. Again, the results depict that the technological factors have no significant effect. Leaders’ attitude towards AIT has a mediating effect on the relationships between the environmental, the cooperatives’, as well as the technological factors and the intentions to adopt AIT. The results will guide promotional strategies by technology providers and help government agencies better optimize policies to promote widespread use of AIT. Collapse

Abstract: This article provides an enriched technology acceptance model explaining the impact of both classic and additional variables on software engineering tools acceptance within Information Systems Development courses. Two novel, domain-specific variables were identified (i.e., Professional Training Diffusion and Model Interchange). Statistical verification of the proposed model and study regarding the influence of the variables on students’ intention to use specific tools were conducted—providing users with enhanced means of selecting optimal software for real-life projects. Abstract: The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) is a little over a decade old and has been used extensively in information systems (IS) and other fields, as the large number of citations to the original paper that introduced the theory evidences. In this paper, we review and synthesize the IS literature on UTAUT from September 2003 until December 2014, perform a theoretical analysis of UTAUT and its extensions, and chart an agenda for research going forward. Based on Weber's (2012) framework of theory evaluation, we examined UTAUT and its extensions along two sets of quality dimensions; namely, the parts of a theory and the theory as a whole. While our review identifies many merits to UTAUT, we also found that the progress related to this theory has hampered further theoretical development in research into technology acceptance and use. To chart an agenda for research that will enable significant future work, we analyze the theoretical contributions of UTAUT using Whetten's (2009) notion of cross-context theorizing. Our analysis reveals several limitations that lead us to propose a multi-level framework that can serve as the theoretical foundation for future research. Specifically, this framework integrates the notion of research context and cross-context theorizing with the theory evaluation framework to: 1) synthesize the existing UTAUT extensions across both the dimensions and the levels of the research context and 2) highlight promising research directions. We conclude with recommendations for future UTAUT-related research using the proposed framework. Collapse

Abstract: The specifics of business intelligence systems compared to operational IS motivate the necessity to research the business intelligence systems acceptance determinants separately. The authors followed an exploratory approach in order to conceptualize a business intelligence acceptance model. Their findings show that in the Business Intelligence Systems context, there is a significant emphasis on organizational factors, such as result demonstrability, social influence, and facilitating conditions with sufficient resources that help build an adequate information culture all substantially influencing the effective acceptance of business intelligence systems. Abstract: Serious games are an innovative way for tackling design objectives in a variety of IS contexts. In this paper, we explore the use of an online serious game for idea assessment in companies, an approach that is not covered in scientific literature so far. Thereby, we contribute to understanding (i) whether serious games can add to overcoming challenges in the area of idea assessment, and, (ii) whether there are potential biases of the game towards more incremental or radical ideas when played by teams differing in terms of their members’ personality profile. In a first step, we employ the serious game Buy-a-Feature and run a qualitative pre-study under real-life conditions at a German Financial Services provider. Next, we conduct a lab experiment in which 250 participants prioritize a portfolio of 16 ideas by playing the game. Our results demonstrate high levels of engagement amongst the participants, perceived enjoyment, perceived ease of use and confidence with the games’ outcomes. Moreover, teams with a high average score of the personality trait “Openness to Experience” exhibit a bias towards radical ideas, while all other team formations showed rather balanced results. Based on our results we reflect on managerial implications for the use of the game for idea assessment, particularly in a service innovation context. Collapse
