Abstract: This article contributes to the discussion on the governance dynamics of platform ecosystems. We take a broad perspective to understand how the environment beyond the platform ecosystem (i.e., external conditions) shapes the actions of the platform and its various actors in reinforcing platform boundaries. Prior work explored how external influences, such as societal norms and national and local regulations, influence platform ecosystems, including external competitive pressures. But studies on the broader set of potential influences from external conditions are lacking; in particular, a study of such conditions and their influence across platforms in light of boundary reinforcement is called for. Boundary reinforcement is critical for the identity and legitimacy of a platform and for longer-term platform sustenance. Using a fuzzy-set qualitative configurational analysis (fsQCA) method with input coded from 271 peer-reviewed research articles covering 29 platforms, we offer a model detailing how external conditions influence a platform's boundary reinforcement actions. Abstract: Although pre-entry experience is widely regarded as a critical asset that positively influences new entrant performance, empirical support is mixed. To address this inconsistency, we conduct a meta-analysis of the empirical findings in 272 papers. We draw theoretically on the organizational learning literature to argue that the pre-entry experience–new entrant performance relationship is contingent on the characteristics of pre-entry experience, the environmental context of the new entrant, and the interaction between the two. In particular, we examine the effects of two levels of pre-entry experience (firm and founder), four types of founder-level pre-entry experience (entrepreneurial, managerial, industry, and functional experience), and two types of environments (industry and institutional). The meta-analysis results show a significant and positive correlation between founder-level pre-entry experience and economic performance of 0.07. Likewise, the failure rates of spinouts and diversifying entrants are 11% lower than that of start-ups. The moderating analysis results show that the correlation of founder-level pre-entry experience and economic performance is lower in knowledge- or technology-intensive (KTI) industries and higher in low-KTI manufacturing and service industries. The correlation is also higher in institutional environments with high power distance and individualism. These findings provide compelling new evidence for the importance of pre-entry experience and advance our understanding of the boundary conditions on the pre-entry experience–new entrant performance relationship. Abstract: The theory of planned behavior (TPB) is popular in social commerce research, but existing studies have yielded inconclusive and inconsistent findings. As TPB was developed before the introduction of the Internet, Web 2.0 technologies, and social media, it is time to evaluate whether its relevance, effectiveness, novelty, and parsimony may have deteriorated due to temporal factors and the emergence of new Information Systems (IS) artifacts. In this work, an extended TPB2 is proposed by integrating social support, and MASEM analysis was conducted using a pooled correlation matrix. The findings revealed that TPB2 can better capture the nature of social commerce, as it can explain 28.4% of the variance in attitude, 59.0% of the variance in behavioral intention, and 9% of the variance in use behavior. In addition, it indicates that masculinity and uncertainty avoidance are the most significant Hofstedian cultural dimensions. The theoretical and managerial implications are also discussed along with the research agenda. Collapse

Abstract: Information is disseminating more rapidly in today's world than ever before in history. Every now and then, topics simultaneously gain massive attention in social media, dominate news headlines, and attract interest from researchers around the globe. While individual domains and networks are studied extensively, one question remains less addressed so far: How does information spread across different channels, considering dynamics between social media, news and, scientific literature? In this paper, we aim to identify frequent patterns in the dissemination of information over multiple channels. Based on an adapted pattern mining algorithm for multivariate time series, we provide strong indications for the existence of distinctive information diffusion effects between social media, news and scientific literature. We find that when all information channels simultaneously cover a certain topic, the preceding period is characterized either by a sole growth of social media coverage or a simultaneous growth of social media and news coverage. Abstract: As firms are moving towards data-driven decision making, they are facing an emerging problem, namely, algorithmic bias. Accordingly, algorithmic systems can yield socially-biased outcomes, thereby compounding inequalities in the workplace and in society. This paper reviews, summarises, and synthesises the current literature related to algorithmic bias and makes recommendations for future information systems research. Our literature analysis shows that most studies have conceptually discussed the ethical, legal, and design implications of algorithmic bias, whereas only a limited number have empirically examined them. Moreover, the mechanisms through which technology-driven biases translate into decisions and behaviours have been largely overlooked. Based on the reviewed papers and drawing on theories such as the stimulus-organism-response theory and organisational justice theory, we identify and explicate eight important theoretical concepts and develop a research model depicting the relations between those concepts. The model proposes that algorithmic bias can affect fairness perceptions and technology-related behaviours such as machine-generated recommendation acceptance, algorithm appreciation, and system adoption. The model also proposes that contextual dimensions (i.e., individual, task, technology, organisational, and environmental) can influence the perceptual and behavioural manifestations of algorithmic bias. These propositions highlight the significant gap in the literature and provide a roadmap for future studies. Collapse

Abstract: Knowing what factors drive wearable technology adoption can help companies succeed in the competitive market of wearables. In this study, we conduct a meta-analysis on the relationships of technology acceptance of wearable technology based on the extant corpus (142 effect sizes from 44 samples collected in 11 countries). The results confirm the basic expectation that the core constructs of technology acceptance models as well as reveal that perceived enjoyment and usefulness are the most important to the adoption of wearables. However, more interestingly, a granular analysis of moderating effects shows that cultural factors including uncertainty avoidance, future orientation and humane orientation can significantly moderate the relationships between different determinants and wearable adoption. In addition, compared with other types of smart wearables, the users of smartwatches would place more weight on perceived selfexpressiveness. These findings offer insights for future wearables-related research and also have practical implications for designing and developing successful wearable products. Collapse

Abstract: Digitalization has opened new opportunities but also brought new challenges such as lower engagement of students in online training. Especially learning videos need to be changed in their design and structure to make them more engaging for users. So far, overarching design principles are missing that support the development of gamified learning videos. In our research-in-progress paper, we present an overarching approach on how to develop meaningful gamified learning videos. With our design science research approach, we plan to derive design principles and design features from our state-of-the-art design requirements. Additionally, we will conduct a field experiment to put our theoretical contributions to test and gather practical insights. Our research contributes to theory by clarifying how and why gamified videos can support better learning. In the long run, practical contributions can be given to developers about how to construct gamified learning videos. Collapse

Abstract: Employees generate a rich source of information by publishing employer reviews online. However, researchers seeking to harness employer review data face an elusive body of research to build on. Therefore, I present a systematic, multidisciplinary literature review, presenting the information obtained from employer reviews, the research topics covered, and the data sources used. My analysis of 28 peerreviewed journal articles shows that studies extract insider knowledge, information on employee satisfaction and changes in employee satisfaction, insights into workplace culture, and linguistic style from employer reviews. Studies do so to predict firm performance, to explore employee satisfaction factors, and to uncover the linguistic style of employer reviews. Glassdoor is the primary data source used. Abstract: Companies that offer digital services to users for free are tempted to market their digital by-catch, personal data, on rapidly evolving personal data markets (PDMs). This paper presents a systematic literature review on PDM instruments that actively involve data subjects. First, by reviewing and classifying existing data subject-inclusive PDM instruments, six categories of PDM instruments are identified. Second, the contribution of the identified instruments towards creating data subjectinclusive PDMs is analyzed using a six-dimensional normative ethics-based framework. The analysis outlines technical, legal, and political instruments that could shape exploitative PDMs to become more ethical and data subject-inclusive. This shall nudge scholars to develop instruments that change current market structures, thus fostering data subject-inclusivity and minimizing inequalities in PDMs. Furthermore, the paper shall guide policy makers and practitioners in setting morally adequate framework conditions to create more data subject-inclusive PDMs. Collapse

Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to investigate the challenges and implications related to blockchain adoption in the private and public sectors, and from the entrepreneurs’ perspective. Based on 46 semi-structured interviews, a data-driven conceptual framework is proposed focussing on the environmental, organizational and technological challenges of blockchain adoption. The framework includes expected socio-economic value of blockchain adoption at the ecosystem level from a multi-stakeholder perspective: organizations and industries, end-users and society, public sector, and start-ups and entrepreneurs.
