Digital transformation and European small and medium enterprises (SMEs): A comparative study using digital economy and society index data

Abstract: Digital transformation is profoundly transforming SMEs’ business activities, bringing about comparative ad­ vantages and associated risks. Previous studies on digital transformation and SMEs focus on technology adoption, innovation, new value creation, and dynamic capabilities. However, it is unclear how digital technology affects SMEs’ specific business activities. We study SMEs’ customer access, increasing competition, external funding or access to finance, rising input costs, skilled labor shortages, exogenous shocks, global crises, and regulatory is­ sues. This study aims to fill the literature gap by exploring the impact of digital technology, using digital economy and society index (DESI) as proxies for the SME issues. We use DESI and SME data from a survey on European enterprises’ access to finance. We find that digital transformation strengthens SMEs’ ability and flexibility to address main business issues. Furthermore, findings reveal that digitally transformed SMEs have fewer concerns about access to new and traditional customers, competition changes, access to finance, increasing input costs, external shocks, and regulatory changes. However, digital transformation also brings risks, such as the shortage of skilled labor and experienced managers and loss of inherent competitiveness. The novelty of our work lies in supplying quantitative knowledge on the link between digital transformation and European SMEs’ critical business concerns. These findings substantially increase our understanding of the impact of digital change on European SMEs’ business activities. Collapse

Abstract: The development of science and technology (ST) should respond to the needs of today's world, which is unfortunately heading towards a climate catastrophe. Many people do indeed use ST to protect the environment. However, for many, technological progress, economic growth is prioritized over environmental concerns. The presented study tracks the mutual relation of these attitudes. Log-linear analysis was conducted using secondary data obtained from the World Values Survey. The study sample includes all European countries that participated in the survey and Canada, China, Turkey, United States of America. The research considers four types of attitudes: Synergy of attitudes, Green attitudes, Red attitudes and Rejection of attitudes. The results explain the relationship between classification into a particular type of attitudes and variables such as gender, age, education level. The study is addressed to practitioners, policy-makers, educators interested in better understanding the needs of future participants in educational activities for environment protection. Collapse

Abstract: Algorithmic decision making is gaining popularity in today's business. The need for fast, accurate, and complex decisions forces decision-makers to take advantage of algorithms. However, algorithms can create unwanted bias or undesired consequences that can be averted. In this paper, we propose a MAX-MIN fair cross-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) model that solves the problem of high variance crossefficiency scores. The MAX-MIN cross-efficiency procedure is in accordance with John Rawls’s Theory of justice by allowing efficiency and cross-efficiency estimation such that the greatest benefit of the leastadvantaged decision making unit is achieved. The proposed mathematical model is tested on a healthcare related dataset. The results suggest that the proposed method solves several issues of cross-efficiency scores. First, it enables full rankings by having the ability to discriminate between the efficiency scores of DMUs. Second, the variance of cross-efficiency scores is reduced, and finally, fairness is introduced through optimization of the minimal efficiency scores. Collapse

Abstract: Smart cities are developing at increasing speed. Smart cities rely on the deployment of information and communication technology (ICT) that is digitally transforming our habitats. Digital transformation affects several areas from transportation, energy, government to the environment. But, primarily, it affects citizens. Therefore, the adoption of all areas of the smart city holds great research potential. The purpose of this paper is thus to provide an insight into millennials’ adoption of autonomous vehicles (AV), which are at the forefront of future transport. Millennials are an important focus group for smart city concepts since they are keen to adopt tech­ nology and new transport modes. Our research focuses on technology adoption, perception of the benefits, se­ curity, safety, mobility-related efficiencies and concerns as the key AV adoption factors. The impact of these factors is empirically tested with structural equation modelling using data from 382 millennials. We confirm the perceived benefits of AV are vital factors for AV adoption whereas the perceived safety of AV significantly re­ duces the influence of various concerns regarding AV. Collapse

Abstract: Smart city (SC) research is an engaging research area as evidenced by a rising number of publications indexed in the most relevant global citation databases. However, research advances are not equally discussed and distrib­ uted within Europe. This study puts a focus on the specific geographic location of Southeast Europe (SEE), intending to fill the gap in understanding the research advances in this part of Europe. The aim of this descriptive review was to systematically investigate peer-reviewed publications focused on SC research in SEE in order to present the findings and the state-of-art in this research domain. Seventy-four papers were thoroughly studied, analysed and classified based on their focus on SC themes and common sub-themes. While smart governance had been studied extensively in the SEE region, topics related to the smart economy and smart people received low attention from researchers. Mapping the selected papers to the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle showed that SC research in SEE is still in the conceptualising and planning stages, with very little evidence from the real implementation and follow-up activities. From the stakeholders’ perspective, the focus is on the institutional point of view as most of the papers present their findings in relation to (national or local) government bodies or policies, without balancing with corresponding businesses’ or individuals’ (users’) point of view. In general, user involvement was found to be very low in regards to current SC research in the SEE region. Collapse

Abstract: During a crisis such as COVID-19, governments ask citizens to adopt various precautionary behaviours, such as using a voluntary proximity tracing application (PTA) for smartphones. However, the willingness of individual citizens to use such an app is crucial. Crisis decision theory can be used to better understand how individuals assess the severity of the crisis and how they decide whether or not to adopt the precautionary behaviour. We propose a research model to examine the direct influence of perceived crisis severity on intention to use the technology, as well as the indirect impact via PTAs’ benefits for citizens. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirm the two dimensions of the benefits, namely personal and societal benefits. We used PLS-MGA to evaluate our research model. The results confirm the influence of the perceived severity of COVID-19 on the intention to use the PTA, as well as the mediating effects of personal and societal benefits on this relationship. Our findings contribute to the technology adoption literature and showcase the use of crisis decision theory in the field of information systems. Collapse

Abstract: Based on 172 articles, this article contributes to the research of technostress by providing a descriptive literature review using a systematic methodology from 1984 until 2018. Following a review protocol, each article collected was classified through publications types, research methods and topics associated: research method, year of publication, journal, sample country, conceptual framework, key variables, type of technologies. The results of this literature review revealed that the research on technostress is rising and future research should be conducted following multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, using mixed method and focusing on specific technology. Abstract: Telemedicine innovation is important for accelerating the digital transformation of the health care sector. However, telemedicine is a discontinuous digital innovation, and incumbent health care organizations are lagging in its adoption. We combine research on IT innovation adoption and discontinuous innovation to study the relative role of two drivers of discontinuous innovation adoption: digital complementary assets and the regulatory environment. Our findings from 1,753 acute care hospitals across 30 European countries suggest that digital complementary assets have a stronger effect on telemedicine innovation adoption than the regulatory framework. In addition, we observe application- and business model-specific differences. Overall, our findings add the role of organizational versus regulatory drivers of discontinuous innovation adoption to information systems research, emphasize the importance of digital complementary assets for the adoption of discontinuous innovation by incumbent organizations, and provide new insights into how the diffusion of telemedicine innovation can be accelerated. Abstract: To survive in a dynamic and hyper-competitive business environment, firms are compelled to simultaneously introduce incremental and radical innovations. While it is recognised that business intelligence and analytics (BI&A) can support innovation and provide organisational value, the literature provides a limited understanding of its impact on balancing different innovation activities and ensuring performance gains. In this study, we examine the relationship between BI&A use, innovation ambidexterity, and firm performance by relying on the process theory of IS value creation as well as the dynamic capabilities perspective. We test our model using data collected from medium- and large-sized firms in Slovenia, applying partial least squares modelling. The results support the notion that BI&A use is positively associated with successful balancing between explorative and exploitative innovation activities, which in turn enhances firm performance. Our results also indicate that innovation ambidexterity is enhanced in two ways: indirectly through interaction with the firm’s absorptive capacity, and directly by increasing the possibilities of faster experimentation with offerings of products or services and improved predictability of the value of new products or services.
