Abstract: The COVID-19 outbreak has witnessed a significant increase in the development and testing of healthcare chatbots. However, this could raise ethical concerns and pose challenges for responsible research in sensitive healthcare areas such as mental health. Our study focuses on the application of the Social Presence theory to mental-health chatbots. We use quantitative content analysis to determine if users in high-risk mental-health situations require a higher level of social presence from chatbots. Abstract: Though most studies have been conducted in the luxury electronic commerce sector, few have focused on the influence of Instagram. This study improves research by examining new dimensions of users’ experiences on this social network. This study aims to provide the core elements of brand engagement on Instagram, focusing on an empirical comparison of the relationships established between two fashion retailers and their followers on Instagram. The study is based on the coding of 728 posts collected over 1 year and carries out a comparative analysis using bivariate and multivariate modelling of the interactions between brands and their followers. The results of this work show that fashion retailers still generate little interaction with Instagram users, although there is some engagement between the two parties. The empirical results are evidence of the importance of a communication strategy in generating involvement and engagement with the brand. The study thereby provides industry professionals with the patterns in those posts that can encourage greater engagement with and participation from users online. Collapse

Abstract: As concerns about personal information privacy (PIP) continue to grow, an increasing number of studies have empirically investigated the phenomenon. However, researchers are not well informed about the shift of PIP research trends with time. In particular, there is a lack of understanding of what constructs have been studied in what contexts. As a result, researchers may design their study without sufficient guidance. This problem can lead to unproductive efforts in advancing PIP research. Therefore, it is important and timely to review prior PIP research to enhance our understanding of how it has evolved. We are particularly interested in understanding the chronological changes in contexts and research constructs studied. We use a chronological stage model of PIP research we develop, a set of contextual variables identified from prior literature, and the four-party PIP model suggested by Conger et al. (2013) as theoretical foundations to conduct a chronological literature review of empirical PIP concern studies. We find several PIP research trends during the last two decades, such as the quantity of PIP research has drastically increased; the variety of contexts and research constructs being studied has increased substantially; and many constructs have been studied only once while only a few have been repeatedly studied. We also find that the focus of PIP research has shifted from general/unspecified contexts to specific ones. We discuss the contributions of the study and recommendations for future research directions. We propose a fifth party as an emergent player in the ecosystem of PIP and call for future research that investigates it. Collapse

Abstract: We present an empirically grounded and theoretically informed model for the assessment and mitigation of risks to effective knowledge sharing in agile development. The model is anchored in empirical insights from four agile projects across two software companies and in extant research on risk-strategy analysis and knowledge sharing in software development. We develop the model as part of the long-standing tradition of presenting risk management models dedicated to specific issues in software development and confirm its practical usefulness in one of the software companies studied. The model offers concepts and processes to assess a project's knowledge sharing risk profile and articulate an overall resolution strategy plan to mitigate the risks. The results highlight how different knowledge sharing risk management profiles can lead to different project performance outcomes. We conclude with a discussion of research opportunities that the results offer software development scholarship. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Collapse

Abstract: While the literature offers several frameworks that explain barriers to knowledge sharing within software development teams, little is known about differences in how team members perceive these barriers. Based on an in-depth multi-case study of four software projects, we investigate how project managers, developers, testers and user representatives think about barriers to effective knowledge sharing in agile development. Adapting comparative causal mapping, we constructed causal maps for each of the four roles and identified overlap and divergence in map constructs and causal linkages. The results indicate that despite certain similarities, the four roles differ in how they perceive and emphasize knowledge-sharing barriers. The project managers put primary emphasis on project setting barriers, while the primary concern of developers, testers and user representatives were project communication, project organization and team capabilities barriers, respectively. Integrating the four causal maps and the agile literature, we propose a conceptual framework with seven types of knowledge-sharing barriers and 37 specific barriers. We argue that to bridge communication gaps and create shared understanding in software teams, it is critical to take the revealed concerns of different roles into account. We conclude by discussing our findings in relation to knowledge sharing in agile teams and software teams more generally. Collapse

Abstract: This study introduces the concept of ‘digital diversity’ to refer to the increasing workforce heterogeneity that stems from the recent rise of digital natives in the workforce. While digital diversity is expected to promise innovation and efficiency, it may also give rise to organizational challenges. The nature of the promise and challenge of digital diversity as well as how it is perceived across diverse groups, however, remain unexplored. Through a multisite study of software development companies, this study provides a deeper understanding of digital diversity and its promise and challenge in the particular context of software development workforce. Furthermore, drawn upon empirical data and insights from generational and diversity research, a model distinctly suited to studying digital diversity in software development workforce, is developed. Abstract: Inequalities in the access to and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) have become an important area of concern for over a decade. Yet, theoretical attempts to understand the dynamics behind shaping these inequalities are scarce. This study draws upon the extent literature on ‘digital divide’ and explains how four different access gaps (motivational, material, skills and usage) contribute to digital divide. Revealed causal mapping (RCM) is utilized to analyze the data collected from eight same-gender focus groups in four primary schools. The revealed causal map demonstrates the interaction and linkages between different access gaps. The findings provide a theoretical account of the dynamics behind shaping digital divide and generate insights into extending the concepts of ‘access gaps’. The results place an emphasis on the centrality of motivational-related factors such as ‘Lack of Interest in IT-Related Things’ and ‘Lack of Motivation to Learn Recent Technology’ and skills-related factors such as ‘Operating Skills’, ‘Anti-Filtering Skills’ and ‘Not Having IT Background’. Abstract: This paper describes instances of multicommunicating—or engaging in more than one conversation at a time. It uses a critical incident technique to explore successful and unsuccessful incidents of multicommunicating from the perspective of 201 MBA students. Additionally, we asked which media individuals pair together when multicommunicating. We found very frequent pairing of the telephone (which provides partial compartmentalization but no flexibility of tempo) with electroric text (which provides both compartmentalization and flexibility of tempo). We also found that respondents provide a variety of reasons for labeling a particular episode as “unsuccessful.” In many cases the person seemed to describe an episode as unsuccessful when the person or a communicating partner had exceeded his or her ability to juggle multiple conversations as demonstrated by communication errors. Abstract: We used quality of work life theory and the causal mapping method to evoke the concepts and linkages of women's cognitions about work–family conflict in order to better understand the issues contributing to advancement barriers and voluntary turnover of women in IT. The major concepts (Managing Family Responsibilities, Work Stress, Work Schedule Flexibility, and Job Qualities) were found to not only impact each other but also were key factors influencing women's advancement opportunities and voluntary turnover. Abstract: Virtual organizations that use e-mail to communicate and coordinate their work toward a common goal are becoming ubiquitous. However, little is known about how these organizations work. Much prior research suggests that virtual organizations, for the most part because they use information technology to communicate, will be decentralized and nonhierarchical. This paper examines the behavior of one such organization. The analysis is based on a case study of the communication structure and content of communications among members of a virtual organization during a four-month period. We empirically measure the structure of a virtual organization and find evidence of hierarchy. The findings imply that the communication structure of a virtual organization may exhibit different properties on different dimensions of structure. We also examine the relationship among task routineness, organizational structure, and performance. Results indicate that the fit between structure and task routineness affects the perception of performance, but may not affect the actual performance of the organization. Thus, this virtual organization is similar to traditional organizations in some ways and dissimilar in other ways. It was similar to traditional organizations in so far as task-structure fit predicted perceived performance. However, it was dissimilar to traditional organizations in so far as fit did not predict objective performance. To the extent that the virtual organizations may be similar to traditional organizations, existing theories can be expanded to study the structure and perceived performance of virtual organizations. New theories may need to be developed to explain objective performance in virtual organizations. Collapse
