Abstract: This study seeks to thoroughly understand the organizational context in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) would be implemented, through a systematic review and analysis of articles published (up to 2021) in 31 journals on information systems, business, management, and operations management. Seventy themes are identified from the literature and categorized into organizational, information systems, technological, and people dimensions for the antecedents, challenges, guidelines, and consequences of AI implementation in organizations. A conceptual framework for understanding AI implementation in organizations is also proposed. This study provides a research agenda to guide future research and facilitate knowledge accumulation and creation on AI implementation. Collapse

Abstract: No research has systematically reviewed the role of spatial ability in virtual reality (VR) learning. This has resulted in inefficiencies in educators’ ability to adopt personalized teaching strategies based on learners’ spatial ability to maximize the effectiveness of VR. Therefore, this study conducted a literature review on spatial ability in VR learning to provide researchers and educators with a comprehensive understanding of how spatial ability affects VR learning. After searching Scopus with keywords and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, the researchers identified 30 relevant research articles for the review. This literature review mainly analyzed research trends, contexts, theories, methodologies, and findings from the identified articles. The contradictory role of spatial ability in VR learning was also summarized. Based on the literature analysis, this study identified research gaps and indicated directions for future research. Abstract: Traditional citation analysis methods have been criticized because their theoretical base of statistical counts does not reflect the motive or judgment of citing authors. In particular, self-citations may give undue credits to a cited article or mislead scientific development. This research aims to answer the question of whether self-citation is biased by probing into the motives and context of citations. It takes an integrated and fine-grained view of self-citations by examining them via multiple lenses — polarity, density, and location of citations. In addition, it explores potential moderating effects of citation level and associations among location contexts of citations to the same references for the first time. We analyzed academic publications across different topics and disciplines using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results provide evidence that self-citations are free of bias in terms of citation density and polarity uncertainty, but they can be biased with respect to positivity and negativity of citations. Furthermore, this study reveals impacts of self-citing behavior on some citation patterns involving citation density, location concentration, and associations. The examination of self-citing behavior from those new perspectives shed new lights on the nature and function of self-citing behavior. Collapse

Abstract: As a contribution towards consolidating the information systems (IS) field, we offer a systematic method for distilling a canonical body of knowledge (BOK) for information systems development (ISD), an area that historically accounts for as much as half of all IS research. Based on an integrative synthesis of the literature, we present a map of the most significant ISD research, uncover gaps in its canons and suggest fruitful lines of inquiry for new research. Our review combines citation analysis, which identifies the field's evidence of cumulative tradition, with computer-aided textual analysis, a hermeneutically guided method that organizes the fragmented corpus of ISD literature into coherent knowledge areas. From a pool of over 6500 articles published in the IS Senior Scholars' Basket of Journals, we find 940 IS citation classics, and from that list, 466 ISD articles that offer canonical ISD knowledge distinctive to IS and complementary to other disciplines such as software engineering and project management. From this study, we offer two contributions: (1) a justification for an ISDBOK grounded in the theory of practice and professionalism, and (2) a canonical map of disciplinary ISD knowledge with areas that have demonstrated cumulative tradition and others that require the attention of IS scholars. © 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Collapse

Abstract: The widespread availability and use of social media has drastically altered disaster response in the last few years. Although a considerable amount of empirical research addresses social phenomena enabled by social media in response to disasters, the field still lacks a clear-cut knowledge base. We conduct a systematic literature review to illustrate the state of the art with respect to collective behaviour in social media in disaster situations. We find that social media have the potential to alter well-known patterns of collective behaviour, such as the distribution of activities undertaken by different types of actors over the disaster management lifecycle. Social media furthermore loosen the structural relationships between actors as they facilitate addressing wider audiences and enable communication to unspecified receivers. We conclude that future research should specifically address the causal relationship between collective behaviour in social media and the characteristics of disasters. Furthermore, research should pay particular attention to adapting existing theories and frameworks to, and developing new theoretical approaches for, the emerging digital world. Collapse

Abstract: Software as a Service (SaaS), which offers the possibility to cover both core and non-core business operations of a company, has profoundly transformed traditional outsourcing approaches. As SaaS represents promising solutions for a variety of business processes, it is important to identify a theoretical framework to evaluate SaaS adoption for these two types of operations. We propose an integrative framework to evaluate SaaS adoption by including four perspectives–economic savings, strategic influences, management attitudes toward ownership and vendor’s service quality; and formulate hypotheses to predict the difference in SaaS adoption for core and non-core business operations. We validate our framework using data from 269 companies across different industries in Hong Kong. The results support the integrative framework. Perceived cost advantage has a positive influence on SaaS adoption for non-core business operations, whereas a gap in IT capabilities has a positive influence on SaaS adoption for core business operations. Furthermore, perceived service quality has a positive influence, and management attitude toward ownership and control has a negative influence on SaaS adoption for both types of operations. Collapse

Abstract: Information Systems (IS) researchers have increasingly focused attention on understanding the identity of our field (Hirschheim & Klein 2003; Lyytinen & King 2004). One facet of any discipline's identity is the social aspect of how its scholars actually conduct their work (DeSanctis 2003), which is formally labeled as the study of sociology of science. Contributing to this tradition of work, we empirically examine scholarly influence (Acedo et al., 2006); scientific collaboration, including metrics that capture the prevalence of c-oauthored work; antecedents to co-authorship; and the effect of co-authorship on subsequent citations. Based on analyzing five leading IS journals for a period of seven years, we found that co-authored papers have become increasingly common in leading IS journals and that co-authoring continues to be more prevalent in journals published in North America compared to European journals. Moreover, we found significant effects of homophily related to gender, homophily/proximity, and geography. IS scholars worldwide exhibit a stronger preference for collaborating with co-authors of the same sex and those who attended the same PhD program than one would expect by chance. We also examined differences among journals and found some intriguing results for the effect of co-authorship on citations. Overall, we found evidence that the number of co-authors was positively related to citations although there was some variance across journals. These findings point to a need for more research to better understand both the processes of collaboration and the drivers and downstream benefits associated with it. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce the technique of co-citation analysis from the field of Library and Information Science. In addition to describing how this analytic method has been employed in other fields, we explain how document co-citation analysis differs from author co-citation analysis in terms of precision. We pose three questions for our empirical study of HIT research and describe our document co-citation analysis of citations to HIT research appearing in 20 leading IS journals and eight leading general medicine journals from 2000 to 2010. We performed co-citation analysis separately for published research in IS and medicine, identifying nine and eight subfields of HIT research, respectively. We describe the specific subfields in each domain and list sample papers corresponding to them. Finally, we identify the common attributes of older studies that cause them to be co-cited often, including how such attributes differ between IS vs. medicine. Collapse

Abstract: The notion of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) communication has received considerable attention in both business and academic communities. Numerous studies have been conducted to examine the effectiveness of eWOM communication. The scope of published studies on the impact of eWOM communication is large and fragmented and little effort has been made to integrate the findings of prior studies and evaluate the status of the research in this area. In this study, we conducted a systematic review of eWOM research. Building upon our literature analysis, we used the social communication framework to summarize and classify prior eWOM studies. We further identified key factors related to the major elements of the social communication literature and built an integrative framework explaining the impact of eWOM communication on consumer behavior. We believe that the framework will provide an important foundation for future eWOM research work. Collapse

Abstract: This paper employs citation analysis to investigate empirically the influence of top IS journals on both IS and other literature. We assessed the quality of the three top IS journals by comparing their citation indices and examining the distribution of their citations among different disciplines. Some 7429 citations from the Social Science Citation Index and Social Science Index (2003-2009) are made to 425 source articles published in MISQ, ISR, and JMIS between 2003 and 2007 (inclusive). Our results reveal that the citation-based quality indices of MISQ are consistently better than those of ISR and JMIS. In addition, our results provide strong evidence that articles published in the three top IS journals have significant impacts to different disciplines, with JMIS appealing most to articles in science and engineering and ISR contributing mostly to professional journals and magazines. The knowledge contribution of MISQ appears to be the most balanced among the three. Collapse
