Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) has increased the ability of organizations to accumulate tacit and explicit knowledge to inform management decision-making. Despite the hype and popularity of AI, there is a noticeable scarcity of research focusing on AI's potential role in enriching and augmenting organizational knowledge. This paper develops a recursive theory of knowledge augmentation in organizations (the KAM model) based on a synthesis of extant literature and a four-year revised canonical action research project. The project aimed to design and implement a human-centric AI (called Project) to solve the lack of integration of tacit and explicit knowledge in a scientific research center (SRC). To explore the patterns of knowledge augmentation in organizations, this study extends Nonaka's SECI (socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization) model by incorporating the human-in-the-loop Informed Artificial Intelligence (IAI) approach. The proposed design offers the possibility to integrate experts' intuition and domain knowledge in AI in an explainable way. The findings show that organizational knowledge can be augmented through a recursive process enabled by the design and implementation of human-in-the-loop IAI. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic caused most companies and organizations to start utilizing remote work. Naturally, this gave rise to many issues regarding employee performance, communication, and collaboration, especially in the early stages of the pandemic. Since the beginning of the pandemic, organizations and employees have learned to cope with the situation. In this paper, we wanted to study how the COVID-induced remote work period has impacted organizational knowledge creation processes. By conducting a case study in a higher education organization, we conclude that the SECI mode of socialization was affected the most by the remote work period. In addition, we found no differences between genders. Younger employees were better at combination, and employees from the ICT department coped better with socializing during the remote work period. Based on the results of the study, we conclude that if remote work remains dominant, organizations might stand to lose more tacit knowledge due to lowered socialization over time. Collapse

Abstract: Design science projects are of great interest in information systems (IS) research. Typically, designoriented projects generate valuable design knowledge through the design and possible instantiation of artifacts. Although designing novel artifacts and accumulating design knowledge is common practice in IS, there is still limited shared knowledge about the distinctive characteristics of design knowledge to facilitate its accumulation. To address this issue, we develop a design knowledge taxonomy and contribute to a deeper understanding of design knowledge properties. The taxonomy is grounded on a systematic literature review, followed by a combination of empirical-to-conceptual and conceptual-to-empirical iterations. We evaluate the taxonomy by interviewing six domain experts and demonstrate its practical application and utility. Thus, the taxonomy consists of key dimensions and characteristics of design knowledge and contributes to a better scientific understanding of its characteristics. Practitioners can use the taxonomy as an instrument to further understand, design, and accumulate design knowledge. Collapse

Abstract: The goal of design science research is the generation of novel artifacts. Thereby DSR projects generate valuable design knowledge, thus, underscoring the importance to codify of design knowledge for achieving scientific progress. The research community observes that DSR projects generate a large amount of design knowledge, but the developed knowledge often ends as a single success story. To counter this situation, we analyze the variety of design knowledge representation forms that have been published in the AIS Senior Scholars’ Basket in design science research papers. Based on our systematic literature review, we identify prevalent ways of design knowledge representations. We provide as a central contribution how to effectively communicate design knowledge through the derivation of recommendations that provides practical guidance to support researchers and practitioners in making design knowledge contributions reusable and applicable. Abstract: This conceptual article contains a proposed four-part categorization of crowdsolving platform features: contest, idea, participant, and community. A related conceptual framework depicts the relationships of these features with the outcomes of creating, transferring, and assimilating knowledge for the platform and its client firms, according to the socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization (SECI) model. Arguments based in Social Capital Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Organizational Knowledge Creation Theory inform the predictions about the spiral of interactions between explicit and tacit knowledge that occurs during a contest on a crowdsolving platform. The findings suggest ways to design a crowdsolving ba (shared space for creativity) and platform-level absorptive capacity. For platform managers, this study also offers new insights into the important decisions they must make to develop their platforms’ features. Collapse

Abstract: We develop an empirically grounded understanding of how design knowledge accumulates over time. Drawing from theory on knowledge creation, we conceptualize accumulation along the goals and scope of knowledge in DSR as a distinct knowledge creation problem. Through two empirical studies, we theorize knowledge accumulation in DSR by unpacking (1) three knowledge creation mechanisms, and (2) explaining how their interplay forms different patterns of knowledge creation over time. We contribute a theoretical framework conducive to integrating knowledge produced through different methods by introducing the knowledge creation processes as a distinct unit of analysis in DSR and by pointing out that extant procedural models may need revision to account for the continuous knowledge creation occurring in potentially multiyear DSR projects. Abstract: Big data has become a buzzword and has been one of the most sought after topics for research. The applications of big data have been studied in various important contexts. However, very little has been explored in the realm of integrating knowledge co-creation with the usage of big data when it comes to evidence-based decisionmaking. The current study empirically investigates data from four fashion retailing organizations. Evidence from our ﬁndings suggests that knowledge-based interactions between the customers and the salesforce in those organizations form the core of knowledge co-creation. The ﬁndings have revealed that big data indeed can assist in knowledge co-creation, which can in turn adequately lead to evidence-based, eﬀective and eﬃcient decision making for better business returns. Abstract: The dynamic knowledge creation process, traditionally described and applied in the context of large firms, is receiving growing attention in entrepreneurship research as a model to identify ways to decrease mortality rates in the "valley of death," the stage of entrepreneurship infamously known for the high percentage of startup failures. Prior innovation literature associates entrepreneurship activities with the socialization phase of Nonaka’s dynamic theory of knowledge creation (also known as the SECI model). However, linguistic analysis of interviews with entrepreneurs indicates that internalization (i.e., the creation of tacit knowledge from explicit assets) plays an important role in new ventures activities. In this study, we distinguish between internalization in the current venture from internalization during the entrepreneur’s prior employment. We find a strong relationship between references to the past and internalization that is mediated by negative emotions, which may have motivated the entrepreneur to leave prior employment and launch a new venture. We also find a strong relationship between an entrepreneur’s references to the past and the number of employees in the venture, indicative of the importance of an entrepreneur’s prior knowledge internalization to the current venture. This research contributes to the growing field of entrepreneurial knowledge management by extending the role of the entrepreneur’s past knowledge creation activities to those of her/his new venture. It underscores the common tagline that we can learn more from our failures (negative emotions). Collapse

Abstract: This research examined the interaction between organizational culture (OC) and knowledge sharing (KS) in detail. The findings of recent studies on the topic have been inconsistent. By focusing on socialization adopted from the organizational knowledge creation theory and itemizing KS into knowledge contributing and knowledge seeking, new findings were discovered. A multi-method case study was conducted within a Fortune 15 technology company. Data were collected through company records for the year of 2017, 82 surveys, 23 observations, and 23 interviews. The data were analyzed through multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), descriptive statistics, qualitative analysis, and triangulation. A statistically significant interaction between OC and KS via socialization was discovered. Moreover, distinct from previous studies, competitive OC was positively related to knowledge contributing with knowledge seeking as a potential moderating variable, but negatively related to knowledge seeking when mixed with bureaucratic OC, and positively related to KS when mixed with clan OC.
