Abstract: There is a growing interest in understanding the role of genetics in explaining heterogeneity in behaviors, including those related to information systems (IS). The majority of the recent genetics research focuses on searching the entire genome in genome-wide association studies (GWASs) to link DNA to human traits. The results of GWASs can be used on datasets to compute a measure of genetic propensity known as a polygenic score, or PGS. PGSs are widely viewed as the future of genetics research. We conducted an exploratory study, in the context of information technology (IT) use, to examine if the PGS approach can be used to better understand the role of genetics in IS research. Consistent with our hypotheses, genetic endowments associated with Educational Attainment and General Cognition positively predict technology use, and genetic endowments associated with Neuroticism, Depressive Symptoms, Myocardial Infarction, and Coronary Artery Disease negatively predict technology use more than half a century later (genetic endowments are established at conception and our sample consists of individuals aged 50 to 80). Many of the characteristics known to be associated with heterogeneity in IT use (e.g., trust, education) appear to be mediators linking PGSs to IT use. Nonetheless, a number of PGSs maintain meaningful direct effects.This appendix 26 provides additional background and details on molecular genetics, and some of the major issues surrounding the construction and use of GWASs and PGSs. For readers interested in learning more, we recommend Browne and Walden's (2020) Appendix A for additional details on molecular genetics and the structure of DNA, Duncan et al. Abstract: With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), more and more enterprises have begun developing AI to promote their own competitive advantage and increase their business value. In order to reveal the value-added results of AI implementation, this study adopts an event study methodology to capture the abnormal returns resulting from the announcement of AI implementation. Based on the empirical results of this study, in response to the announcement of AI implementation, we find significant positive abnormal returns on the event day. With respect to the grouping analysis, the results show significant differences in average cumulative abnormal returns between announcements with detailed information and those without detailed information. In addition, our findings present significant differences in average cumulative abnormal returns between IT-companies and non-IT companies on the event day. Ultimately, according to the content analysis, only one characteristic, the frequency of negative words, is modestly and negatively correlated with average cumulative abnormal returns. Collapse

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of online learning. As learner autonomy is relatively high in online environments, learners must engage in self-regulated learning (SRL) to achieve optimal learning outcomes. Because most learners are unable to consistently engage in SRL, gamification interventions are being implemented to improve SRL engagement; however, mixed results cast doubt on the efficacy of this approach. Massively open online courses (MOOCs), a type of online learning environment, are currently experiencing rapid growth due to widespread adoption by many institutions. In MOOCs, there is no instructor intervention; hence, students have difficulty regulating their own learning and are easily distracted. Therefore, this study investigates whether mixed-research results regarding the efficacy of gamification can be attributed to lack of attention to individual learner traits during design. For this purpose, the study analyzes MOOCs as an instance of online learning by applying SRL theory and gamification principles. We altered a traditional MOOC platform to provide different types of gamified performance feedback to facilitate learners’ SRL engagement. We then examined whether this matched with goal orientation, an individual learner trait to influence SRL and learning outcomes. Using learning-analytics tools, we tracked 760 college students’ SRL engagement on a MOOC platform over five weeks. As theorized, SRL engagement and learning outcomes of participants who had a strong performance-avoidance goal orientation increased with positively framed performance feedback that involved no social comparisons; however, the same feedback had a negative impact on participants with a strong mastery goal orientation. Our findings add to SRL theory by demonstrating that gamification designs can enhance SRL engagement and learning outcomes in online learning, but with a caveat—this occurs only when there is a match with learner traits—confirming the gamification principle stating that task improvements and meaningful engagement can only occur through thoughtful gamification design.History: Raghu Santanam, Senior Editor; J. Abstract: Online Medical Records (OMR) platforms can provide benefits to chronic disease patients. Yet, OMR use among them is suboptimal. The study identifies clusters among nonusers of OMR among chronic patients. The Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) iteration 5, Cycle 3 data were used to analyze 1071 respondents. Latent Class Analysis was run on the six reasons for nonuse (no record, speaking directly, privacy or security of the website, no Internet, login issues, and no need to access) and resulted in 3 clusters. About 19% subjects expressed multiple reasons and 69% just one strong reason. Demographic and clinical attributes were partially associated. For electronic wearable/tracking device use or electronic communication, differences among clusters were noted; persistent resisters showed lower propensities to use. Interventions to improve patient use of Internet-based health technologies should be customized and help produce patient-generated data facilitating healthcare decision-making. Collapse

Abstract: With the development of mobile communication technologies, people can now engage in seamless communications with family members and coworkers at both home and work. When promoting a new mobile communication technology (e.g., the 5G network), firms may be tempted to emphasize how the technology can strengthen communication both within and across the two domains with the hope of improving purchase rates. Yet research has suggested that people may perceive mobile communication differently depending on whether those they are communicating with others who belong to the same domain. Thus, the promotion of the technology to potential users should perhaps consider users' location domain and their communication targets. Through a field experiment, we show that when promoting mobile communication technology in the home domain, highlighting prevention-focused communication promotes greater purchase rates. However, at work, when coworkers are the target of communication, highlighting promotion-focused communication works better. These findings can not only help practitioners design more effective promotional messages in promoting mobile communication technologies but also contribute to the understanding of nuanced differences in the nature of mobile communication that make it more appealing to users in different within-and cross-domain communication scenarios. Abstract: Data science is widely perceived as an attractive, lucrative, and prestigious emerging occupation. Research so far has focused on understanding data scientists' practices and identity work associated with establishing and legitimizing this new occupation. This work, however, is not sufficient to explain a phenomenon we observed whereby professionals rejected the opportunity to adopt this new occupational identity. To understand why professionals may not want to be labeled data scientists, we analyzed 43 interviews with data professionals at an educational measurement company in the U.S. Despite a clear steer from management towards the data science label, many interviewees stuck to their established professional identities. In our preliminary findings, we use the literature on identity conflict as a lens to make sense of our observations. By identifying three types of conflicts: 1) task conflict, 2) role conflict, 3) tool conflict, we begin to explain what turns professionals away from data science. Collapse

Abstract: The digitization of the manufacturing domain results in an enormous amount of available data decision-makers are continuously exposed to. Consequently, critical alarm information must be easily comprehensible and suit decision-makers' preferences to facilitate timely reactions and thus prevent harm to production processes and employees. However, despite its importance, academia and practice show little consensus regarding alarm design in manufacturing dashboards. Against this background, the purpose of our study is twofold. First, we identified 5 factors for visual alarm design with overall 12 design options in a structured literature review. Second, we investigated the effect these design options have on users' comprehension and preferences in a conjoint study and a best-worst scaling approach with 98 participants with experience working in manufacturing. Our results show that alarm description and their visual integration are the most important factors for alarm design. In this regard, a cluster analysis reveals more nuanced and more stable preferences in more experienced users. Further, we find that color-coding-based content classification entails best performance in recognizing alarms. We contribute to academia and practice by providing actionable insights that may support improving alarm design in manufacturing. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the impact of various factors on meeting service level agreements (SLAs) for information technology (IT) incident resolution. Using a large IT services incident dataset, we develop and compare multiple models to predict the value of a target Boolean variable indicating whether an incident met its SLA. Logistic regression and neural network models are found to have the best performance in terms of misclassification rates and average squared error. From the best-performing models, we identify a set of key variables that influence the achievement of SLAs. Based on model insights, we provide a thorough discussion of IT process management implications. We suggest several strategies that can be adopted by incident management teams to improve the quality and effectiveness of incident management processes, and recommend avenues for future research. Abstract: Online innovation contests (OIC) provide companies, via a dedicated community, an important means to access remote knowledge and ideas of users and thereby a creative playground for fueling innovation. Our literature review shows that our understanding of the impact of diverse types of feedback on user participation, especially continued participation, and success in OIC is at a nascent stage. The present study therefore seeks to examine why and how different types of feedback influence users’ behavior in OIC, and the detailed mechanisms un­ derlying such influences. While our results do not show a significant relationship between receiving peer dy­ namic feedback and user success, we find that receiving sponsor static feedback in users’ first submission is positively associated with their continued participation in OIC. Also, when compared to peer dynamic feedback, sponsor static feedback has a stronger effect on users’ continued participation. Our goal is to confer a holistic picture of how the timing, source, and form of feedback shape user continuous participation and success in OIC. Collapse

Abstract: Although self-service data preparation and analytics tools (SSPATs) have become increasingly popular and can provide major benefits to users, barriers associated with the technology and its usage may prevent adoption. Based on prior work on technology acceptance and related theories, this study develops a net effects model and a configurational effects model to further the understanding of SSPAT acceptance. Using a configurational lens, this study shows how a fresh methodological approach from a different epistemological stance applied to a well-established theoretical basis can offer novel insights into effects and patterns that may complement exisiting findings. The results of our empirical study based on a sample of 339 firms confirm insights from previous studies and advance them by providing vision for compound antecedents of SSPAT acceptance and complementarity effects among antecedent conditions.
