Abstract: Research on digital platform ecosystems is growing rapidly. While the relevance of third-party applications is commonly known, scholars have made only minor attempts to analyze knowledge sharing between platform owners and third-party developers. We find that third-party application development is a knowledge intensive task that requires knowledge to cross organizational boundaries. In this paper, we use computational analytic methods to analyze knowledge sharing in a digital platform ecosystem. We collected trace data about a third-party developer ecosystem with frequent knowledge exchange between the platform owner and third-party developers. We developed a web scraper and retrieved all 4866 pages of SAP’s developer community that were tagged ‘SAP Cloud Platform’. Next, we used text mining to render a topic model. Based on the latent dirichlet allocation algorithm, we extracted 25 topics that were frequently discussed in the community. We clustered the topics into the following six meta-topics: User Accounts and Authentication, Connectivity, Cloud Database, Specific Technologies, SAP Resources, and Installation. Platform owners can use our approach to (1) identify frequently discussed topics, (2) generate meta-knowledge in these topics and (3) use the meta-knowledge to improve their platform core and its boundary resources. Abstract: Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) providers are increasingly engaged in nurturing vibrant ecosystems of independent software vendors (ISVs) by offering standardized services. However, cloud ecosystems have also been known for its fluctuation and high rates of desertion. A currently under-researched explanation for this low traction and high rates of fluctuation may lie in the fact that ISVs face considerable costs when joining and acting on a specific platform. If these costs are too high, they can rapidly outweigh the additional value generated by the ecosystem. This study therefore explains the role of different configurations of cost-inducing factors and resource benefits in influencing an ISV´s platform loyalty. By using a configurational approach based on fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (FsQCA), we display complex interactional effects of cost and benefits as causal conditions on ISVs’ intention to stay in the ecosystem and thus provide valuable insights for both practice as well as theory on platform ecosystems. Abstract: The emergence of platforms is shifting the locus of digital innovation to ecosystems on which numerous developers create extensions with additional functionalities. Despite all the potential benefits for complementors, however, this new organizing logic of digital innovation also introduced essential new risks. Recent studies in IS focused on risk of IT projects from a contingency perspective neglecting the complexity of ecosystems. In order to shed light on this, our work examines how app architecture as a complementor´s control mechanism and four types of ecosystem hazards shape the likelihood and impact of the risk of failure in thirdparty innovation. By using a configurational approach based on fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (FsQCA), we display complex interactional effects of the causal conditions on complementors’ perception of hazardous environments and thus provide valuable insights for both practice and theory on platform ecosystems. Abstract: In the domain of enterprise applications, organizations usually implement third-party standard software components in order to save costs. Hence, application performance monitoring activities constantly produce log entries that are comparable to a certain extent, holding the potential for valuable collaboration across organizational borders. Taking advantage of this fact, we propose a collaborative knowledge base, aimed to support decisions of performance engineering activities, carried out during early design phases of planned enterprise applications. To verify our assumption of crossorganizational comparability, machine learning algorithms were trained on monitoring logs of 18,927 standard application instances productively running at different organizations around the globe. Using random forests, we were able to predict the mean response time for selected standard business transactions with a mean relative error of 23.19 percent. Hence, the approach combines benefits of existing measurement-based and model-based performance prediction techniques, leading to competitive advantages, enabled by interorganizational collaboration. Abstract: Platforms enable third-parties to develop new software artefacts like applications and become the locus of digital innovation. Prior studies have mainly focused on the benefits that initially motivate external complementors to join an ecosystem. However, little is known about the costs that are associated with this choice and how such costs actually influence the decision to interrelate with a platform owner. We develop the overarching idea that the complementor´s costs are mainly influenced by the interplay of the microarchitecture of single extensions and control modes applied to govern the ecosystem. The purpose of our research is therefore to shed light on the nature of complementors’ costs on the micro-level of transactions between the platform owner and the complementor and their effects on the intention to join an ecosystem. Core business activities are being carried out through OLTP systems that provide limited monitoring capabilities of the running process instances. The article shows how to turn the gap between the classic transactional system and the processcentric approach into an organization that provides more accurate and faster decisions on the strategic and operational management levels. This study aims at determination of what kind of information can be retrieved during the process execution and it tries to identify the need for the real-time process intelligence on the example of the order-tocash process. Furthermore, we compare two architectural approaches of the real-time process intelligence monitoring system. Abstract: In-memory databases (IMDB) are a raising technology and have the potential to mark the end of computing performance bottlenecks. Our literature review did reveal that to date, no study analyzes the resulting benefits of IMDB usage and little is known about cause and effect of IMDB usage and its economic effects. This paper provides a structured analysis of experiences gained with IMDB usage. Surprisingly, our study showed that the promoted vision of IMDB as enabler for an integrated OLAP/OLTP infrastructure has not been put into practice yet. Currently, IMDB is mainly used for response time improvement in the field of analytical data processing. Furthermore, we observed that IMDB is predominantly used to improve existing business processes, instead of establishing new business models. The findings of our study may serve as basis for the development of hypotheses, validation and advancement of the theory of disruptive innovation and further empirical quantitative studies. Collapse
