Abstract: The increasing share of renewable energy sources poses the challenge of volatile energy generation, requiring demand side management (DSM) to manage such volatility. In view of the high industrial electricity demand and the increasing charging demand of electric vehicles (EVs), both industry and mobility represent relevant areas of DSM. However, the combination of EV charging and energy-intensive industrial processes still contains untapped synergy potentials. Thus, we present a mixed-integer linear program and quantify the economic and ecologic potential of combining energy flexibilities of industry and electric mobility within a case study. For our evaluation, we compare the results of our model to a benchmark case that separately manages industry and EV flexibilities. Our findings suggest that implementing our approach would yield both economic and ecological benefits, resulting in a reduction in anticipated costs and emissions, as well as a decrease in associated uncertainty. Abstract: Disasters and crises are a part of human existence. While upsetting the normal operations of societies and revealing the inherent fragility of infrastructure and social order, they also push us to rethink "the normal" way of living and working. At this moment, IS research on the experiences of businesses in times of war as an extreme crisis is very limited. Taking the case of Ukrainian businesses, we ask the following research questions: How have organizations adapted to war discontinuities and built resilience? and How have the experiences of remote work from the pandemic contributed to building organizational resilience in times of war? Analyzing semi-structured interviews with managers from Ukrainian businesses through the lenses of adaptation theory, remote work discontinuities, and capability-based model of organizational resilience, we present the types of discontinuities experienced and the adaptation strategies used by the companies in addressing them. Our findings show that the resilience of Ukrainian companies has its roots in agile management, continuous communication and collaboration, experiences in using digital technologies during the pandemic, and international community support. The results also indicate the organizations continuously coping and adapting, re-coping, and re-adapting while anticipating unexpected events, which calls for developing a more dynamic resilience model. Abstract: Patent management tasks involve many stakeholders from diverse disciplines and hierarchies as well as from inside and outside the organization. By drawing on the transaction cost and stakeholder theories, Blockchain technology offers new opportunities to rethink the way in which stakeholders are organized and collaborate. Although Blockchain technology receives considerable attention from both the public and academia, the question of how Blockchain technology leverages patent management in particular has so far been neglected, although it holds great promise. Consequently, this is what we choose to be our basic research question. In response to it, we conduct a systematic literature review, following a procedure in three steps. Out of an initial sample of 714 articles, we select 52 as being particularly relevant, and classify them in accordance with the dimensions of the 7D Patent Management Maturity Model. Three main foci regarding the use of Blockchain technology emerge – i. e. for the generation, the enforcement, and the exploitation of patents. This study contributes to scholarship and management by showing that Blockchain technology mitigates environmental and behavioral uncertainty, while stimulating new governance forms and business models by reorganizing or discarding stakeholders. Abstract: When IT work is performed through digital labor markets, IT professionals have a high degree of personal responsibility for their careers and must use appropriate strategies to be successful. This paper investigates the success of IT freelancers on digital labor platforms. Drawing on signaling theory, a dataset of 7166 IT freelancers is used to examine how activating, pointing, and supporting signals lead to success. Analysis was carried out using negative binomial regression. The results indicate that the three signaling types positively influence the objective career success of IT freelancers. This paper contributes to the literature by testing signaling theory in the new context of digital labor platforms, investigating IT specifics, and proposing support as a new type of signal for IT professionals on digital labor platforms. In practice, the results provide guidelines for IT freelancers to improve their success within their careers. Collapse

Abstract: This study explores how bribery affects firm growth by focusing on the asymmetric dependence of firms on government resources and services. We conceptualize bribery as relationships through which bribery requests require firms to frequently interact with rent-seeking government officials. Through bribery relationships, such officials extort firms beyond the exchange of bribe money for preferential treatment, depriving acquiescing firms of time and effort and thereby imposing hidden costs that could be otherwise used for firm growth. We find that bribery relationships damage firm growth. Firm status such as introducing new products or not affects how rent-seeking government officials check on firms and calculate their extortion schemes in bribery relationships; bribery relationships damage firm growth more significantly for firms without new products. The damage of bribery relationships to firm growth is also contingent on institutional environments. Under pervasive corruption, firms in bribery relationships may increase their acquiescence to the extortion of rent-seeking government officials. In countries with high-quality governance, however, firms can depend on sound regulations and rules of law and government officials experience high moral costs of corruption. Thus, the negative effect of the bribery relationship on firm growth will be strengthened under pervasive corruption and weakened under high-quality governance. Using Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey and World Governance Indicators data for 28 Eastern European countries from 2002–2014, we demonstrate the multifaceted features of the bribery relationship and its interaction with country-level institutional environments. Abstract: Cyberattacks can be considered one of the fundamental challenges that paralyze the progress of digital payment usage (DPU) progress among citizens, as consumers shun away from using digital banking services due to increased concern over information security. National Cybersecurity Commitment (NCSC) has emerged as a preventive cybersecurity mechanism for countries to tackle such cybersecurity threats. Previous studies have shown that a country's NCSC positively impacts the business and economy of the country. This study examines the effect of NCSC on digital payment usage (DPU) across nations by grounding our discussion on the institutional trust theory. As trusting belief in security measures is a culturally embedded characteristic, we also examine the moderating role of national culture through Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. We use multilevel models to analyze publicly available archives of repeated cross-sectional data covering 76 countries to test the proposed relationships. Our findings indicate that NCSC has a positive influence on DPU. Further, our results highlight that the relationship between NCSC and DPU in a country is contingent on cultural dimensions. Overall, the evidence suggests that a competent cybersecurity environment compatible with cultural values can influence the speedy diffusion of digital payments in a country. Abstract: The globalization of the world economy increases the role of value chains, where disruptions in the realization of the logistics processes occur repeatedly. Climate changes, pandemics, and military conflicts further increase the difficulties in matching supply and demand in a vast majority of networks. As a result, the digital transformation of Supply Chain Management (SCM) often referred to as Digital Supply Chain (DSC) is considered an important solution for several SCM concerns. Extensive subject matter literature research pointed out that several technologies have been studied and implemented as DSC solutions contrary to blockchain technology. Therefore, the research aims of this article is to examine the challenges of DSC with particular emphasis on blockchain technology perception in this context. Research has been conducted via structured in-depth interviews with SCM experts. Study results highlighted that blockchain is perceived by SCM experts as a technology with significant capability to support the creation of DSC, but unfortunately used at all. They also pointed out that blockchain should not be the technology of the first choice when initiating the digitization of SCM processes, but potentially beneficial for mature DSC. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we apply the Analytic Hierarchy Process approach to conflict resolution in the context of the Russia–Ukraine conflict. We build models that illustrate the evaluation criteria, strategic and sub-criteria, and concessions for each party in this negotiation. Ratings are used to evaluate the degree to which concessions contribute or take away from successful resolution of the conflict. Afterwards, gain ratios are built to determine the benefit-cost scores so that concessions may be traded that result in equitable solutions. The approach presented here demonstrates for the first time why all concessions that parties to a conflict may offer might not trade all at once. A Max–Min optimization approach is used to maximize the gain to both parties of the conflict while minimizing the disparity in gain between the two. Collapse

Abstract: The humanitarian crisis resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to millions of displaced individuals across Europe. Addressing the evolving needs of these refugees is crucial for hosting countries and humanitarian organizations. This study leverages social media analytics to supplement traditional surveys, providing real-time insights into refugee needs by analyzing over two million messages from Telegram, a vital platform for Ukrainian refugees in Germany. We employ Natural Language Processing techniques, including language identification, sentiment analysis, and topic modeling, to identify well-defined topic clusters such as housing, financial and legal assistance, language courses, job market access, and medical needs. Our findings also reveal changes in topic occurrence and nature over time. To support practitioners, we introduce an interactive web-based dashboard for continuous analysis of refugee needs.
