Abstract: Information privacy is increasingly important in our digitally connected world, particularly in healthcare, and privacy regulations are ramping up to promote appropriate privacy practices. As a digital platform that enables healthcare providers to exchange protected health information (PHI), a health information exchange (HIE) is governed by health information privacy regula­ tions. The challenge for HIEs is to operate in a way that will maximize information exchange while maintaining compliance with regulations that may constrain the sharing of PHI. Regula­ tions impose a measure of universality through compliance requirements, while being flexible to allow adaptation to the local context. However, our longitudinal case study into the privacy policies of an HIE, demonstrates that the journey of privacy ideas from their original formulation in regulations, to their ultimate enactment in an organizational setting, is accompanied by translations, such that the final implementation may vary extensively from its original form. Such variability often results in interpretations that differ from what the regulators intended. Conse­ quently, translation guardrails are necessary to protect against problematic translations of reg­ ulatory ideas which could lead to compliance issues and loss of platform participation. Our findings offer two contributions. First, we contribute to the compliance literature by explaining how guardrails can balance the use of permission and obligation schemas which are necessary to translate regulations into effective organizational policies for the success of HIEs and other in­ formation exchange platforms. Second, we contribute to extending translation theory by explaining how pragmatic reasoning schemas function as the mechanism through which trans­ lation of regulations occurs. Collapse

Abstract: To cope with the digital transition exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, managers of manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) need to adopt innovative practices to face uncertain scenarios and create longterm value, identified as transformational entrepreneurship practices. Among emerging digital technologies, digital platforms are shaping and outgrowing the e-commerce channel representing a potential opportunity for manufacturing SMEs to embrace digital transformation. Drawing on affordance theory, this research uses a mixed method approach to investigate how manufacturing SMEs’ e-commerce commitment and digital platform adoption stimulate the actualization of three e-commerce affordances: consumer knowledge generation, inter­ nationalization, and customer diversification. Based on survey responses from 165 manufacturing SME man­ agers, we find that direct selling through owned websites actualizes consumer knowledge generation and internationalization, indirect selling actualizes customer diversification and internationalization, and agency selling through third-party platforms actualizes all three affordances. The relationship between e-commerce commitment and ecommerce performance is mediated by consumer knowledge generation and internationali­ zation but not by customer diversification. A fsQCA analysis outlines seven configurations actualizing these ecommerce affordances by pairing different ecommerce approaches with degrees of e-commerce commitment. Finally, an analysis of open-ended questions from 24 respondents complements the study and deeply interprets the seven unique configurations outlined. Collapse

Abstract: Literature suggests various perspectives of the role of blockchain technology (BCT) in organizations, such as, techno-centric, humancentric, and technology institutionalization. This paper aims to look the adoption of blockchain, through the lens of institutionalization perspective based on the Institutional Theory. The literature argues that institutional theory pressures are only sufficient for innovation if it is seen as a solution where imitation can be followed. However, if there is no consensus on innovation adoption, it becomes difficult to understand the organizational economic and technical needs. Therefore, it is important to understand institutionalization of novel technologies like blockchain, which have yet to have enough examples to follow. The study proposes a framework based on data gathered via semi-structured interviews of blockchain experts using the Delphi method. Abstract: Digital identity systems are mandated to be established by all countries as part United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDG 16.9) However, globally, over a billion people are still without a digital identity. Digital identity projects, across continents, have achieved underwhelming results and are facing implementation hurdles. This research examines the architecture and design of digital identity platforms which enable achieving platform objectives. Design science approach of General Morphological Analysis (GMA) has been employed for such examination. Cases of both-a successful and another moderately successful digital identity program implementation have been examined to validate testable propositions regrading optimal architecture/design aspects of such platforms. Research learnings are relevant for policy makers and technology designers to incorporate such platform design aspects in respective national digital identity initiatives. In addition, this research contributes to design science body of knowledge by empirical generalization of a configurable template and design factors in respect of digital identity platforms. Abstract: When unexpected events occur, IT project teams need to react appropriately in order to limit the potentially negative, and sometimes disastrous consequences of such events. Yet, while past research has identified unexpected events as being an important aspect to consider when managing projects, the existing literature does not provide a clear conceptualization of this concept which limits the development of new theories and thus the ability to guide practitioners. Based on a literature review and to advance our understanding of unexpected events in IT projects and their effective management, and facilitate future theoretical developments on IT project management, the present paper develops a conceptualization that clearly distinguishes this concept from other closely related ones, as well as proposing a research framework that links it to IT project team responses and their consequences. Abstract: Virtual influencers on social media are an intriguing phenomenon on the rise. They are computergenerated characters that attract a large number of followers and audiences who interact and engage with virtual influencers. Audience engagement with virtual influencers is an interesting phenomenon; yet little is known about the motivation and essence of such engagement. This research takes a qualitative approach of netnography to study audience engagement with virtual influencers. Content analysis on audience comments left on three virtual influencers' Instagram accounts (including Miquela, Noonoouri, and Guggimon) is conducted. Four major content themes emerge in audience comments: emotional attachment, source admiration, novelty, and expertise. We propose a conceptual model that postulates the impacts of these factors on engagement, moderated by the anthropomorphism of virtual influencers. This research reveals insights into drivers of audience engagement with virtual influencers, providing a theoretical model and practical implications. Collapse

This community-engaged project focused on education and technology. Half of the research team lives in Canada and half in the Dzaleka Refugee Camp. Abstract: With the rise of socio-political movements seeking to improve women's circumstances in society, research on gender has been continuously growing in Information Systems (IS) research. Despite this growth, critical-ethical perspectives on gender power dynamics are lacking. Therefore, we critically investigate the perceptions of male and female IS developers on gender inequalities using feminist ethics of power. We find that interviewees coincide in the belief that inequalities are improving and that gender is not a limiting factor of competencies. However, men and women deviate regarding perceptions of respect and validation, equality, and the drivers that (re-)produce disparities. Additionally, women exhibit fragmented conceptualizations of inclusion. Through a critical analysis of these findings, we expose ethical dilemmas that arise from these contradictory perceptions of gender inequalities and propose pathways for transforming the prevailing order. Our study contributes by advancing a broader perspective on inequalities through the lens of feminist ethics of power. Collapse

Abstract: While information systems organizations recognize the importance of incorporating responsible innovation into their activities, they often face difficulty implementing this practice because employees lack the required knowledge and skills, particularly the capacity for reflexivity and reflection. This paper aims to accelerate responsible innovation teaching and training for information systems students to expedite the process of positive change for sustainability. Using the action design research methodology and the responsible innovation lens, we developed a workshop enabling information systems students to form measurable reflection skills. The workshop evaluation suggests that learning took place and that students are willing to adopt responsible innovation in their future workplaces. A set of design guidelines is proposed to guide further training programs to enhance students' ability to address complex challenges responsibly. This paper answers the call for more impactful information systems research to address societal and environmental challenges and enriches the literature on sustainable social development and business practices. Abstract: Digital workplace technologies and changing demands of the workforce drive digital workplace transformation (DWT). In response, the human resources (HR) function implements people analytics (PA), which can either enable traditional HR reporting or facilitate novel personalized employee experiences. This either/or in leveraging PA induces a shift in the HR function's identity. Building upon paradox theory and using the concept of identity, we investigate the occurring tensions due to the implementation of PA. We use a two-staged qualitative research approach, consisting of an ethnography at a company undergoing DWT, extended to insights from 18 expert interviews from the field of PA for theoretical generalization. We make two contributions. First, our findings suggest two HR identity archetypes: HR as resource managers vs. HR as growth catalyst. Second, we extend the paradoxical tension between these two archetypes to DWT literature questioning the pertinent view of identity metamorphosis. Collapse
