Abstract: With the increasing digitalization of health data, patients need to make informed decisions about the online sharing of their protected health information. This necessitates a robust technical infrastructure that enables patients to self-manage consent and the trusted exchange of this information across sharing entities. Unfortu­ nately, current health information exchange systems in the U.S. are limited in both these regards. While there is recent work on digital patient consent management, there is limited work that provides effective solutions for patient self-management of consent. Further, interoperability issues in the way health information exchanges are currently architected and differences in regulations across localities exacerbate the challenges of consent man­ agement. In this research, we survey potential patients' willingness to self-manage healthcare-related consent. Having established the desire for consent self-management, we propose a solution that enables the seamless sharing of patient consent across different healthcare providers and health information exchanges. Specifically, we use a rigorous design science approach to create a blockchain-based, self-managed patient consent system and we evaluate the design through an instantiated prototype. The results of our study should be useful to researchers in healthcare information management as well as to practitioners designing consent management systems. Our research contributes to design science research with an innovative, rigorously evaluated, design principles-based artifact that addresses a critical problem of sharing protected health information. Abstract: Online dating has replaced traditional offline venues largely because of the structured presentation of visual and verbal information about potential partners. This study shows that including verbal information alongside visual information in online dating profiles affects attractiveness assessments by women more favorably than it affects those by men. These gender differences, however, are mitigated by using a mobile device instead of a personal computer. The findings extend the selectivity model, as well as the literature on online dating and mobile use, by highlighting gender differences in processing specific information types and by identifying the device as a boundary condition. Abstract: Health information exchange (HIE) is vital to improving care delivery and outcomes, and patient consent is an important component of HIE. Existing consent processes that involve completing forms at a provider, along with poor interoperability between HIEs, give patients limited control of their consent management. We developed and deployed a survey to assess how people perceive the value of HIE, the importance of controlling access to their protected health information (PHI), and how they would prefer to manage consent for the exchange of their PHI. Given the option, 70% of the participants would prefer to use a consent application (app) to manage their consent. Based on the current U.S. HIE environment, we argue that the most viable architecture for implementing an HIE consent app would be a permissioned blockchain. We describe and illustrate a consent management app prototype that is blockchain-based as an effective alternative to current HIE consent practices. Abstract: Modern career concepts revolutionize our understanding of a successful career. Employees nowadays define career success in many diverse ways, based on a variety of personal goals. To attract the next generation of IT professionals and to improve gender balance in IT, organizations must understand future IT professionals’ perceptions of a successful career. By analyzing 127 personal career success definitions from IT students in Germany, we present a broad spectrum of desired career success factors in IT. We illustrate the concept of career success dualism, which describes career success as a balance between multiple factors, such as remuneration and work-life balance. Furthermore, we present how female IT students have a stronger drive toward subjective career success factors than males. Our study contributes to a better understanding of current IT students and suggests how organizations can hire and retain the next generation of IT professionals. Collapse

Abstract: Our knowledge on differences in business model characteristics of thriving and failing Multi-Sided Platforms in competitive B2B networks (B2B-MSP) and potential influences of increasing governmental involvement remains fragmented. This study develops a taxonomy to classify special B2B-MSP with varying governmental influence in the supply chain and transportation context, viz. Port and Cargo Community Systems (CS). Based on the classification of 44 international CS, we identify four archetypes using cluster analysis. The taxonomy provides practitioners with a differentiated view on the configuration options of CS business models including the involvement of governmental institutions, while the presented archetypes contribute an aggregated view of CS business models. The statistical analysis of our results provides initial explanatory approaches on CS business model dimension interdependencies, thereby laying the basis for a deeper understanding of sectoral and geographic differences of B2B-MSP and their diffusion dynamics as well as facilitating a higher contextualization of future research. Abstract: Online reviews contain many vital insights for quality management, but the volume of content makes identifying defect-related discussion difficult. This paper critically assesses multiple approaches for detecting defect-related discussion, ranging from out-of-the-box sentiment analyses to supervised and unsupervised machine-learned defect terms. We examine reviews from 25 product and service categories to assess each method’s performance. We examine each approach across the broad cross-section of categories as well as when tailored to a singular category of study. Surprisingly, we found that negative sentiment was often a poor predictor of defect-related discussion. Terms generated with unsupervised topic modeling tended to correspond to generic product discussions rather than defect-related discussion. Supervised learning techniques outperformed the other text analytic techniques in our cross-category analysis, and they were especially effective when confined to a single category of study. Our work suggests a need for category-specific text analyses to take full advantage of consumer-driven quality intelligence. Collapse

Abstract: The use of data analytics (DA) in organizations has raised several ethical concerns including discrimination. While previous studies have mainly focused on the technical antecedents of the issue, this study takes a novel approach and focuses on the human aspect of decision-making when supported by DA tools. The results of our experimental study confirm that the availability of decisional guidance that sheds light on the demographics of data subjects increases DA users’ moral recognition of the situation and their perceived proximity toward data subjects, which in turn help decrease the likelihood of their approval of discriminatory recommendations. Abstract: Beyond AI-based systems' potential to augment decision-making, reduce organizational resources, and counter human biases, unintended consequences of such systems have been largely neglected so far. Researchers are undecided on whether erroneous advice acts as an impediment to system use or is blindly relied upon. As part of an experimental study, we turn towards the impact of incorrect system advice and how to design for failure-prone AI. In an experiment with 156 subjects we find that, although incorrect algorithmic advice is trusted less, users adapt their answers to a system's incorrect recommendations. While transparency on a system's accuracy levels fosters trust and reliance in the context of incorrect advice, an opposite effect is found for users exposed to correct advice. Our findings point towards a paradoxical gap between stated trust and actual behavior. Furthermore, transparency mechanisms should be deployed with caution as their effectiveness is intertwined with system performance. Collapse
