Abstract: Prior studies on the diffusion of complex Information Systems (IS) innovations have leaned on the rhetoric of persuasion perspective to formulate rhetorical strategies that can persuade adopters to engage in adoption behaviors. Yet, most of them ignore the shifting priorities and changing identity of the audience. To address this gap, we extend the perspective by examining how in­ novators need to evolve the adoption message of an innovation by aligning it with the audience’s diverse and shifting priorities (and related identities). We trace rhetorical changes that the Na­ tional Association of State CIOs (NASCIO) introduced to promote the diffusion of enterprise ar­ chitecture (EA) between 2000 and 2012 among the 50 US states. We conduct a mixed methods analysis: first we qualitatively discern changes in the content of the rhetoric (message change); then we use a latent semantic analysis to measure the frame resonance between NASCIO’s shifting rhetoric and the audience’s changing priorities (alignment with audience priorities). Our findings highlight the importance of: 1) frame ambiguity that renders a complex IS innovation appealing to varied audiences over its diffusion trajectory; and 2) listening to the community members’ pri­ orities and aligning the adoption message with their dominant beliefs. Our analysis posits the rhetoric of identification as a complementary lens to account for the co-evolution of shared pri­ orities and identity alignments between innovators and their audiences. Abstract: Existing literature examines control and resistance in the context of service organizations that rely on both managers and customers to control workers during the execution of work. Digital platform companies, however, eschew managers in favor of algorithmically mediated customer control—that is, customers rate workers, and algorithms tally and track these ratings to control workers’ future platform-based opportunities. How has this shift in the distribution of control among platforms, customers, and workers affected the relationship between control and resistance? Drawing on workers’ experiences from a comparative ethnography of two of the largest platform companies, we find that platform use of algorithmically mediated customer control has expanded the service encounter such that organizational control and workers’ resistance extend well beyond the execution of work. We find that workers have the most latitude to deploy resistance early in the labor process but must adjust their resistance tactics because their ability to resist decreases in each subsequent stage of the labor process. Our paper, thus, develops understanding of resistance by examining the relationship between control and resistance before, during, and after a task, providing insight into how control and resistance function in the gig economy. We also demonstrate the limitations of platforms’ reliance on algorithmically mediated customer control by illuminating how workers’ everyday interactions with customers can influence and manipulate algorithms in ways that platforms cannot always observe. Abstract: This research investigates the relationship between couples’ work-orientation incongruence—the degree to which romantic partners view the meaning of their own work differently—and their ability to succeed in making job transitions and experiencing satisfaction with the jobs they hold. We use a social information-processing approach to develop arguments that romantic partners serve as powerful social referents in the domain of work. By cueing social information regarding the salience and value of different aspects of work, partners with incongruent work orientations can complicate each other’s evaluation of their own jobs and the jobs they seek. In a longitudinal study of couples in which one partner is searching for work, we find that greater incongruence in couples’ calling orientations toward work relates to lower reemployment probability, a relationship that is mediated by an increased feeling of uncertainty about the future experienced by job seekers in such couples. Calling-orientation incongruence also relates to lower job satisfaction for employed partners over time. We contribute to the burgeoning literature on the role romantic partners play in shaping work outcomes by examining the effect of romantic partners’ perception of the meaning of work, offering empirical evidence of the ways in which romantic partners influence key work and organizational outcomes. Our research also contributes to the meaning of work literature by demonstrating how work-orientation incongruence at the dyadic level matters for individual work attitudes and success in making job transitions. Abstract: Online social networks (OSN's) have shaped collective action into a new form of organizing and engagement known as connective action. Protests, demonstrations, and social movements have largely relied on social media as their primary organizational process for resource mobilization. These platforms also provide a method to coordinate and influence behavior. Most social science research on connective action has taken a qualitative approach. There are some quantitative studies, but most focus on statistical validation of the qualitative approach (e.g., survey's) or focus on only one aspect of connective action. Computational analysis as a complement to existing survey methods offer in-depth insights about the role of identity and provide insights into the underlying behaviors we see as catalysts for these online movements. This paper presents an interdisciplinary computational approach to analyze connective action by exploring the key features of collective identity, network organization, and mobilization in connective action movements. Abstract: The proliferation of personal data on social media affords hiring managers great opportunities to gather various information about job applicants, resulting in the popularization of social media assessments. Hiring managers inevitably come across nondiagnostic information that is of little diagnostic value for their evaluation of job applicants during the process. In this study, we examine how nondiagnostic information job applicants' social media impacts hiring managers' assessments of them. Drawing upon dilution effects literature and stereotypical fit theory, we hypothesize that viewing nondiagnostic information would dilute stereotype-based evaluation of job applicants, and such dilution effects would be more pronounced if nondiagnostic information is pseudorelevant and presented on professional social media rather than personal. This study would contribute to the IS and management literature by suggesting the role of nondiagnostic information in social media assessments. Collapse

Abstract: How a firm views its competitors affects its performance. We extend the networks literature to examine how a firm’s positioning in competition networks—networks of perceived competitive relations between firms—relates to a significant organizational outcome, namely, product innovation. We find that when firms position themselves in ways that allow them to see differently than rivals, new product ideas emerge. Simply put, firms with an unusual view of competition are more innovative. We situate our analysis in the U.S. enterprise infrastructure software industry, examining the relationship between the firm’s position in competition networks and its innovation over the period of 1995–2012. Using both archival and in-depth field data, we find that two factors—the focal firm’s spanning of structural holes in the network and the perception of peripheral firms as competitors—are positively associated with its product innovation. At the same time, turnover in firms perceived as competitors has an unexpected negative association with innovation. Overall, the findings suggest that firms benefit when they see the competitive landscape differently than their competitors. The findings also show that what we know about innovation-enhancing positioning in collaboration networks does not necessarily hold in competition networks. Collapse

Abstract: We study a new source of bias in online review platforms that originates from the popularity difference between the traveling reviewer’s hometown and destination (popularity-difference bias). In particular, we model popularity-difference bias as a function of two opposing forces: (1) the travelers’ evaluation of performance and (2) the travelers’ expectations. The net result of these two forces leads to two competing views regarding the nature of popularity-difference bias: the first view is performance-dominant, whereas the second one is expectation-dominant. Through analyzing a large set of restaurant reviews from a major online reputation platform, we find empirical evidence in support of the performance-dominant view. Specifically, we find that popularity-difference bias affects both the assigned rating and the text-encoded sentiment of a review. When reviewers travel to a less popular location than their hometown, popularity-difference bias is negative. To the contrary, when reviewers travel to a more popular location than their hometown, popularity-difference bias is positive. Popularity-difference bias affects the average rating of restaurants up to 11%. As a result, a restaurant’s ratings skew lower if the restaurant tends to attract guests from more popular locations, whereas they skew higher if the restaurant tends to attract guests from less popular locations. This effect on ratings alters the probability that an average customer will consider a restaurant by up to 16%. Finally, awareness of popularity-difference bias allows managers to improve the design of their ranking systems: we show that such improvements can lead to up to 12% higher reviewer satisfaction, and up to 24% more diversified top-restaurant recommendations. Abstract: We argue that strong indirect ties are conducive to the transfer of private information, which provides an advantage in identifying profitable investment opportunities. In our context, a strong indirect tie is generated between an investor and a focal firm if the investor was a limited partner of the focal firm’s lead venture capital fund. We suggest that an investor can access private information on the focal firm’s underlying value through its strong indirect tie to the focal firm via the focal firm’s lead venture capitalist. Supporting our theory, we show that after the focal firm’s initial public offering, the investor with a strong indirect tie to the focal firm receives high risk-adjusted return when the investor chooses to invest in the focal firm’s stock in the stock exchange market. We also show that the investor’s private information attained through its strong indirect tie to the focal firm is more valuable (i) when there is higher exogenous market uncertainty and (ii) when the investor faces higher information asymmetry. Abstract: Online education creates new opportunities for learners, which has led to sharply increasing enrollment in the last few years. Despite these benefits, past research shows that the lack of individual interaction with educators creates low learner engagement that leads to high attrition rates, which remains a major challenge in the field. Dynamically scaffolding conversational agents built into online video lectures promise to address this problem by individually interacting with learners, similar to educators' scaffolding behavior. These agents are equipped with recent natural language processing capabilities, creating human-like conversations that help learners to be more engaged in the learning process. To test our hypothesis, we built a dynamically scaffolding conversational agent named Sara and compared it with an often-implemented static conversational agent built into two online video lectures. We deployed a lab experiment with 182 learners. The neurophysiological measurements revealed that Sara significantly improved learner engagement partly explained by differences in learners' perceptions in the way they experienced the interaction. This study connects to already existing conversational agent studies in online education and highlights the importance of including dynamically scaffolding conversational agents in online video lectures to address the problem of low learner engagement in online education.
