Abstract: This methodological paper discusses the ethical and power-based implications of conducting remote and participatory research in a refugee camp in Malawi. This community-engaged project focused on education and technology. Half of the research team lives in Canada and half in the Dzaleka Refugee Camp. This paper reflects on this study, with a focus on remote partnership, team building with community researchers, and the use of digital tools to coordinate and manage data collection and analysis. We also identify where ethics and power are both disrupted and affirmed through participatory activities. Collapse

Abstract: Trust plays a central role in team collaboration, especially in multinational virtual teams. However, our understanding of how different types of trust interact to influence group work efficiency in this context is still limited. This study investigates the development of two types of trust and group efficiency over time in the multinational virtual team context. Three analysis phases were conducted in this research: phase 1 included a qualitative analysis of an online interview with 120 respondents in multinational virtual team collaborations over 5 weeks, phase 2 comprised a general analysis of the trust and group efficiency development with the same respondents, and phase 3 included a quantitative analysis of the interaction effects of trust on group efficiency. The results provide insights into the antecedents of group efficiency and reveal the trend of trust and group efficiency development over time. The authors also investigate trust and group efficiency from the deconstructed and decomposed perspectives. This study contributes to current research by providing evidence on the development of trust and group efficiency and by investigating the interaction effects of trust in the multinational virtual team collaboration context. Abstract: Sustainable competitiveness (SC) encourages nations not only to meet the needs of the current generation but also to sustain or even expand national wealth in the future without depleting natural and social capital. Drawing on complexity theory, we used a configurational approach to identify under what necessary and sufficient conditions, digitalisation contributes to achieve higher SC. Shifting attention from net effects to configuration analysis improves our understanding of cross-national differences in sustainability by exploring how the digitalisation factors combine to strengthen SC power across countries. To address the complexity of this configuration, we have incorporated fsQCA and NCA techniques in the modelling of high and low levels of sustainable competitiveness recipes. Analysis of data from 127 countries advanced our perception of how access to ICT infrastructures and capabilities, combined with the adoption and usage of ICT could result in different degrees of sustainable competitiveness. Theoretically, this study contributes to the literature on digitalisation and national sustainability; and it can practically act as a guideline for policymakers to understand the complex interactions and causal configurations of digitalisation factors on sustainability. Abstract: Considering the challenges of sustainable development and the mixed prescriptions being offered by the use of digital technologies, we present a datadriven narrative of how ICT development impacts the sustainable growth of economies. The analysis is based on historical panel data from 39 economies across the developed and developing economies. The industrystandard CRISP-DM methodology was applied as it is flexible, robust, and offers a practical approach for data analytics. The findings reveal that there are differentiated outcomes in terms of sustainable growth among high-income and low-income economies. This poses legitimate questions as to whether low-income economies will be able to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 through the intermediation of ICT. Collapse

Abstract: We developed a mobile-based information system (MBIS) to empower users to improve their livelihood activities. To do so, we first developed an empowerment framework (since one does not exist) as a basis to develop the MBIS. In particular, we conducted this research to solve an agriculture over-production problem in Sri Lanka where farmers remain trapped in a poverty cycle. They cannot make informed decisions due to lack of access to timely, contextbased actionable information to achieve a good revenue. We had to generate some essential information such as current production level in real-time by capturing farmers’ decisions such as what and how much to grow. For this purpose, we needed to empower farmers to actively engage them in informed decision-making process through the MBIS. In evaluating the impact of the MBIS, we found a statistically significant positive change in farmers’ empowerment levels based on measuring self-efficacy, sense of control, and motivation before and after they used the application. Commercial organizations have since adopted this mobile-based system in India and Sri Lanka to solve agricultural problems, in universities Africa to mitigate hidden hunger, and the Corporative Research Center in Australia to develop digital health applications to manage chronic diseases, which indicates the approach’s wide adoptability. Abstract: Technology-based solutions have been developed to enhance competencies of maternity health workers (MHWs) in the developing countries, but there has been a limited exploration of such tools in the developed world. We developed a web-based application to support care coordination tasks of the prenatal care coordinators (PNCCs) in U.S. using a 3-phase methodology. During the first phase, following key functionalities were identified in collaboration with an expert panel: assessment, information prescription, collaborative calendar, and secure messaging. The second phase was about iterative and incremental development of the app with the expert panel using modular design and easy to use interfaces. This led to the development of a password-protected PHP web application based on a MySQL database. An outside panel consisting of sixteen PNCCs evaluated the tool and provided feedback on perceived benefits, risks and concerns. The evaluators thought that the app could be help them save resources, empower clients, identify risks, maintain continuity of care and simplify documentation. However, they expressed concerns about feasibility of the tool, implementation cost, compliance with guidelines, security issues related to storage of client data and complexity of managing a paperless system. Concerns of MHWs in the developed and developing countries have a significant overlap, hence there is an opportunity for the developed world to learn from research targeted for the developing world. To address some specific concerns of the MHWs in the developed world, we recommend further ethnographic work assuming an activity theoretic approach with the target users. Collapse

Abstract: Safe water accessibility is a basic human right and an essential need for following a healthy lifestyle around the globe. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can serve as a development tool that provides solutions to facilitate easier access to water well locations. However, several methodologies suggest different processes to identify the optimal locations for water wells while at least 1.8 billion people around the world use a fecally contaminated source of drinking water. Since this dilemma is still occurring in the eastern region of Africa, it was necessary to investigate the best practices used to discover locations for drilling wells based on experimental knowledge and updated datasets provided by World Vision. This research utilizes (GIS) to identify the best locations for drilling wells based on empirical knowledge. Abstract: This paper presents a critical analysis of the representation of problems and assumptions for the solutions in the national ICT policy of Malawi. The study employed Carol Bacchi’s What’s the Problem Presented (WPR) to scrutinise national ICT policy and related documents. The results showed that the national ICT policy main objective was to support addressing threat of worse socio-economic status of country and poverty alleviation. The policy solutions were framed around ICT infrastructure, human capital, industries development and governance. The assumptions were that investing in these areas could support the integration of ICTs in the priority sectors of the economy (mining, tourism and agriculture) and achieve social-economic development. The policy solutions focused more on the supply of technology while downplaying cultural, political and contextual issues. The study signals the importance of articulating real needs of policy beneficiaries during policy formulation. Collapse

Abstract: With the momentum around the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), more recently the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there is a steady increase in the number of mobile health (mHealth) pilots, feasibility studies and randomised controlled trials (RCTs) used to evaluate the potential for mHealth in developing countries. Recent research indicates the need for more robust ways of evaluating and measuring mHealth in order to truly understand the tangible benefits, and to better plan for, wide scale mHealth roll-out and implementation. In a number of large funded mHealth projects in Africa, RCTs have been selected as a means of assessing mHealth. However, there remains a dearth of research to support the selection of RCTs as a means of evaluating mHealth. The objective of this research is to investigate RCTs as a method of evaluating mobile health interventions in developing countries. Using a qualitative analysis approach, this study aims to explore the challenges associated with pursuing an RCT for the evaluation of mHealth in Malawi, Africa. Following this, as part of the wider study a checklist of factors will be proposed as a means of determining the suitability (or lack thereof) of RCTs as a means of mHealth evaluation. Collapse

Abstract: This paper investigates how the structure of political institutions influences the effectiveness of corporate political lobbying by shaping the “veto points” and “entry points” that lobbying firms encounter and require, respectively, when attempting to influence public policies; in so doing, this study deepens our understanding of the strategic implications of institutional environments. Using large-sample and cross-country firm-level data, we find that the influence of firms’ lobbying activities on public policies is weakened when there are tighter constraints generated as a result of greater political (partisan) competition and more subnational government tiers. We find that the negative association between the effectiveness of lobbying and political (partisan) competition is particularly pronounced in countries with lower electoral accountability and that the negative association between the effectiveness of lobbying and subnational government tiers is particularly pronounced in more centralized political systems.
