Abstract: Organizations today need internal reporting channels to report illegal/unethical misconduct. For this purpose, organizations set up one or more - often digital - internal reporting channels. Persons/Employees who want to report misconduct, so-called whistleblowers, expose themselves to reprisals and therefore need trustworthy reporting channels which ensure ´Digital Trust´. Blockchain, a technology that overcomes the need for trust due to its properties of immutability and integrity of data, could be promising as underlying technology for a digital reporting channel which is recognized as trustworthy. In our research, we explored multiple perspectives relevant to a trustworthy digital reporting system. Applying design science research, we evaluated the current state of the art of (digital) reporting channels and developed a prototypical blockchain-based reporting solution called “Integrity@Inside”. The prototype is being iteratively demonstrated and pre-evaluated. Collapse

Abstract: This study has implemented a platform, namely piniton.tw, rolling out a redesign of user interaction with screenshot. It is an excellent environment for students' collaborative learning, as students upload screenshots and interact with each other to complete assignments by using animated stickers. As the study intended to investigate how to promote learning transfer by means of such enhanced screenshot interaction with animated stickers, task difficulty, online participation, and learning transfer were chosen as the basis for the research model. By applying the technology acceptance model, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and behavioral intention were included. The results indicated that students' perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness are likely to significantly affect their behavioral intention, which in turn promote learning transfer. An implication is that students' learning transfer could be prompted greatly by enhancing their intention to use such platform that provides enhanced screenshot interaction with animated stickers. Abstract: Extracting useful knowledge from multimodal data is the core of many multimedia applications, such as recommendation systems, and cross-modal retrieval. In this paper, we propose a label-based multimodal topic (LB-MMT) model to jointly model text and image data tagged with multiple labels. Specifically, we use the labels as supervised information to generate the text and image data. In the LB-MMT model, we assume that the textual words and visual words related to each text and image are drawn from a mixture of latent topics, where each topic is represented as a group of textual words and visual words. Moreover, we introduce multiple topics for each label, to build the top-down relationship from label to text and image. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we conduct extensive experiments on a real-world multimodal dataset with labels. The re­ sults show the proposed approach obtains superior performances on topic coherence and label prediction compared with previous competitors. In addition, we show that our model yields interesting insights about multimodal topics. The proposed model provides important practical implications, e.g., designing more attrac­ tive multimodal contents for marketers. Collapse

Abstract: New assistive technology (AT) is at our disposal for improving the everyday life of people in need. Yet, the current way how AT is produced and provisioned is hindering certain marginalised groups in the population, particularly elderly people, to get access to it. To expedite time-to-market, reduce costs, and increase accessibility to otherwise unattainable AT, we explore if do-it-yourself (DIY) could be a feasible and desirable alternative to commercial applications. We provide answers to the following research questions: (1) For whom does the DIY approach work in the context of assistive technology? (2) Under which circumstances do DIY work? and (3) How can researchers make DIY a satisfying experience? The evidence we collected during the “iCare” project suggests that DIY attracts both, elderly people with a need-based motive and a hedonic motive. It also shows that a participatory approach and an early engagement with potential users, their family members, and informal caregivers is beneficial for improving design and use-related aspects of the AT and the DIY intervention. Abstract: Digital platforms have emerged as an important technology underpinning the new economy. A key problem in such platforms concerns provisioning decisions for customer-service requests, in order to maximize the pro­ vider’s revenue subject to resource availability. Provisioning is important to meet customer needs, and in turn, for customer retention. The service provisioning problem, in addition to being NP-hard, is further compounded by the fact that the timeframe to make provisioning decisions is short, and more importantly, varies considerably across different platform domains. Digital-platform customers often request bundled services and are sensitive to when tasks get completed. We describe a behavioral-economic model of this problem and develop a domainindependent solution featuring a judicious combination of optimization-backed rule-based approach. Through extensive computational results, we show how our approach has the potential for generalizability and tailor­ ability across different domains in a seamless manner, thus offering the advantages proposed in the softwarereusability literature. Implications to platform sustainability, reusable platform solutions and to practical ap­ proaches to real-time platforms are also provided. Collapse

Abstract: This study theorizes the role of social signals in overcoming the motivation, coordination, and integration challenges in a hybrid peer production community, WikiTribune. WikiTribune was a collaborative journalism project that combined elements of firm-based production with that of commons-based peer production. Empirical data (article metrics, project documentation, and user communications) was used to examine the first 18-months of building and developing the collaborative journalism platform and community. The study's primary contribution is a social signaling model that extends the theory of commons-based peer production and presents three constructs that inform the socially productive behavior in these communities. These constructs (1) system signals, (2) normative signals, and (3) behavioral signals are theorized to shape user engagement through the different levels of project participation. The alignment/misalignment of these signals with project strategy produce positive or negative outcomes. The social signaling model seeks to explain how challenges are overcome and advantages leveraged in commons-based peer production, in both pure and hybrid forms. Collapse

Abstract: Although the prices of cryptocurrencies remained volatile for the past decade, the factors that impact the price dynamics of the new type of investment instrument have not been fully identified yet. In this study, we recognize the dual nature of cryptocurrencies, that is, being a software program and a financial instrument, and examine the impact of software advancement on the price dynamics of cryptocurrencies. The open-source software (OSS) platform functionality enables social behaviors that we use as signals. Using data from the largest OSS platform, we establish the connection between open-source activities and the price movement of cryptocurrency. In particular, as project popularity (forks and watches) and users' feedback (issues) increase, the market price increases by 4.3 percent, 2.4 percent, and 4.4 percent per annum, respectively. On the contrary, the number of code corrections (pull requests) is negatively related to prices leading to a 5 percent annual price decrease. Our results suggest that OSS contributions create a perfect selection mechanism, where higher quality projects receive more developers' attention and user feedback, whereas lower quality projects do not, thus creating the separating equilibrium. Abstract: Increased regulation creates challenging requirements for production environments, changes mindsets, opens IT silos, and forms IT landscapes with greater integration. Many researchers and practitioners hope to meet future product traceability requirements beyond their companies' borders using Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) approaches. However, interdisciplinary teams still face different organizational and technical standardization challenges in supply networks. This paper uses a Design Science Research (DSR) approach to unify contradictory event terminologies in supply chains and creates a modified Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) token that conceptualizes EPCIS 2.0 standards. The findings show an evaluated input-output traceability system (IOTS) mapping holistic meta-events. We use a simple cross-organizational example and visualization tools that multiple organizations can deploy for efficient backwards and forwards traceability. Abstract: This study focuses on algorithmic interactions in open source work. Algorithms are essential in open source because they remedy concerns incompletely addressed by parallel development or modularity. Following algorithmic interactions in open source allows us to map the performance of algorithms to understand the nature of work conducted by multiple algorithms functioning together. We zoom to the level of algorithmic interactions to show how residual interdependencies of modularity are worked around by algorithms. Moreover, the dependence on parallel development does not suffice to resolve all concerns related to the distributed work of open source. We examine the Linux Kernel case that reveals how algorithmic interactions facilitate open source work through the three processes of managing, organizing, and supervising development work. Our qualitative study theorizes how algorithmic interactions intensify through these processes that work together to facilitate development. We make a theoretical contribution to open source scholarship by explaining how algorithmic interactions navigate across module rigidity and enhance parallel development.
