Abstract: Besides increasing transparency and demonstrating awareness of the author, self-reported limitations enable other researchers to effectively learn from, build on, validate, and extend the original work. However, this topic is understudied in information systems design science research (IS DSR). The study has assessed 243 IS DSR papers published in the period 2013–2022 and built a typology of the 19 most relevant limitations, organized into four categories: (1) Input Knowledge and Technology, (2) Research Process, (3) Resulting Artifact, and (4) Design Knowledge. Further, the contribution suggests actions to mitigate each type of limitation throughout the entire IS DSR project lifecycle. The authors have also created guidelines to report the limitations in a useful way for knowledge accumulation. The proposed typology and guidelines enable reviewers and editors to better frame self-reported limitations, assess rigor and relevance more systematically, and provide more precise feedback. Moreover, the contribution may help design researchers identify, mitigate, and effectively communicate the uncertainties inherent to all scientific advances. Collapse

Abstract: Electronic health records (EHR) have significantly amplified the volume of information accessible in the healthcare sector. Nevertheless, this information load also translates into elevated workloads for clinicians engaged in extracting and generating patient information. Natural Language Process (NLP) aims to overcome this problem by automatically extracting and structuring relevant information from medical texts. While other methods related to artificial intelligence have been implemented successfully in healthcare (e.g., computer vision in radiology), NLP still lacks commercial success in this domain. The lack of a structured overview of NLP systems is exacerbating the problem, especially with the emergence of new technologies like generative pre-trained transformers. Against this background, this paper presents a taxonomy to inform integration decisions of NLP systems into healthcare IT landscapes. We contribute to a better understanding of how NLP systems can be integrated into daily clinical contexts. In total, we reviewed 29 papers and 36 commercial NLP products. Collapse

Abstract: We need innovations that enable a sustainable economy and sustainable private consumption to meet the grand challenges of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As an essential source of innovation, startups play a crucial role in improving sustainability by creating innovative and sustainable products and services as part of their business models (BMs). Since BMs are at a firm's core, BMs are a decisive factor that influences whether startups fail or thrive; we analyze the success factors of sustainable BMs. We interviewed 16 experts from 15 startups implementing sustainable BMs based on digital technologies and one incubator specializing in sustainability. We identify six success factors representing tensions in digital BM design that entrepreneurs need to address. Our analysis shows how the design of sustainable digital BMs differs from regular digital BMs and how the tensions affect the success of startups. Abstract: ☆ This editorial opinion paper provides a subjective viewpoint on the potential impact of generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT in the domains of education, business, and society. Its objective is to offer initial guidance on the opportunities, challenges, and implications associated with these technologies. It is worth noting that, given its nature as an editorial opinion piece, this submission has not undergone a formal double-blind review process but has been reviewed informally by appropriate experts.Transformative artificially intelligent tools, such as ChatGPT, designed to generate sophisticated text indistinguishable from that produced by a human, are applicable across a wide range of contexts. The technology presents opportunities as well as, often ethical and legal, challenges, and has the potential for both positive and negative impacts for organisations, society, and individuals. Offering multi-disciplinary insight into some of these, this article brings together 43 contributions from experts in fields such as computer science, marketing, information systems, education, policy, hospitality and tourism, management, publishing, and nursing. The contributors acknowledge ChatGPT's capabilities to enhance productivity and suggest that it is likely to offer 1 Equal contributions Y.K. Nevertheless, they also consider its limitations, disruptions to practices, threats to privacy and security, and consequences of biases, misuse, and misinformation. However, opinion is split on whether ChatGPT's use should be restricted or legislated. Drawing on these contributions, the article identifies questions requiring further research across three thematic areas: knowledge, transparency, and ethics; digital transformation of organisations and societies; and teaching, learning, and scholarly research. The avenues for further research include: identifying skills, resources, and capabilities needed to handle generative AI; examining biases of generative AI attributable to training datasets and processes; exploring business and societal contexts best suited for generative AI implementation; determining optimal combinations of human and generative AI for various tasks; identifying ways to assess accuracy of text produced by generative AI; and uncovering the ethical and legal issues in using generative AI across different contexts. Abstract: Theory is a crucial aspect of the information systems (IS) discipline. Authors draw from articles on how to develop theory and from the theories themselves to anchor knowledge contributions. Editors and reviewers expect to see novel theoretical insights in conjunction with empirical rigour and sophistication (cf. Hardin et al., 2022). The thinking of PhD students is shaped by discussions on the importance of theory through formal coursework and research seminars, as well as socialisation with peers, supervisors and senior scholars in the field. Journals often solicit submissions to special issues that champion particular kinds of theory or theories on specific topics, for example indigenous theory (Davison, 2021). Advice is given to authors in different ways that they can theorise (Hassan et al., 2022;Hong et al., 2014;Sandberg & Alvesson, 2021;Weick, 1989). The peer review process emphasises the importance of theory and tends to reject research articles that lack substantial theoretical contribution.However, assessing theoretical contributions is often a challenging task. IS scholars research a variety of topics with a pluralistic set of methods and epistemological approaches , which have several implications for our engagement with theory. Traditionally, reference disciplines have informed the diversity of topics IS scholars investigate. The IS field is at a point in its disciplinary evolution where we are seeing an even greater ambit of the application and use of IS, which fosters new topics being investigated from different epistemological and methodological viewpoints as well as new types of contributions . Consequently, IS theories take on different roles for different types of epistemologies and methods, and not understanding or respecting these differences can lead to unreasonable or unbalanced evaluation of papers.In addition to the diversity of theoretical approaches, we also perceive differences in the nature of engagement with theory. For example, papers that analyse large amounts of secondary data (textual and numerical, structured and unstructured) often focus on complex empirical techniques to analyse such datasets, often engaging minimally with theory (Miranda et al., 2022). We believe that sophisticated data analysis does not relieve IS researchers from the obligation to make a theoretical contribution. In this context, we believe, that we should take heed of the advice by Gurbaxani and Mendelson (1994) who warned, almost 30 years ago, about 'the risks of ignoring the guidance of theory' and recommended that IS researchers refrain from tinkering with 'atheoretical "black box" extrapolation techniques ' (p. 180).In an earlier editorial in this journal, Davison and Tarafdar (2018) noted how baselines for what is an acceptable contribution in a discipline shift over time. However, it is our view that a robust theoretical contribution should be (and is) a consistent expectation, even if the nature of the theoretical contribution varies. Journals play a key role in establishing baselines and in that spirit, recent and emerging intellectual trends in IS and other disciplines have implications for how we apply and develop theory in IS and point to an evolving and multi-focused role of theory in IS research. Therefore, in this editorial, we revisit and explicate why theory is important at the Information Systems Journal (ISJ) in these emerging scenarios. Abstract: Online forums sponsored by Electronic Networks of Practice are commonly used to exchange information related to problem solving, but the quality of solutions posted on forums can vary widely. To assist knowledge seekers, most forums offer contextual cues that signal solution quality, such as endorsements by the question poster, experts, or other community members. However, the influence of these cues on information-filtering decisions, particularly when presented simultaneously, remains poorly understood. This study draws on signaling theory to develop hypotheses about how four cue dimensions-source, valence, format, and volume-shape information filtering on an online forum. Results from three choice-based conjoint studies show that some sources are more influential than others and that positive cues weigh more heavily on filtering decisions than negative cues. Results also show that cues tend to be more influential when they employ a more granular format and reflect the input of a larger number of individuals. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to be a powerful tool for the future of medical professionals. However, we recognize a tension between AI independence (automation) and human involvement (augmentation) in medical decision-making. To resolve this tension, we conducted a systematic literature review to gain an overview of the current knowledge of AI in healthcare. In this systematic literature review, we search and analyze the leading journals in management and information systems for a period from 2012 to 2022. We find that several tasks related to diagnosis, treatment, or administrative work can be effectively automated or augmented with AI. We contribute to information systems research by highlighting possible scenarios for the effective use of AI in medical decision-making. Understanding and mitigating these tensions are particularly important for medical decision-makers, regulators, and managers who are struggling with guidelines for the appropriate use of AI and certification of accountability. Abstract: Although the use of cross-sectional surveys is widespread in Information Systems (IS) research and related disciplines, few papers address the survey development process. In order to ensure a standardized approach, comparable and valid results, as well as to guide researchers in quantitative research methods, this paper presents a framework for the survey development process in IS. Based on a Design Science Research (DSR) methodology, the framework was derived from a structured literature review of leading IS journals and refined by three focus group discussions among IS experts. The framework includes several steps and considerations on the sample size, variable selection, their order in the survey, protection against bias, ensuring validity and reliability, and testing before administering the survey with a focus on documentation and reporting. Our framework supports quantitative research by providing a structured approach to create reliable and credible surveys. Collapse

Abstract: The use of multilevel analysis has steadily increased in information systems (IS) research. Many studies are doing an admirable job of integrating two-level models into their examination of IS phenomena. However, two-level models are limited in how well they enable researchers to (1) more explicitly incorporate context into theory development and testing and (2) bridge the existing gap between micro- and macrolevel research by focusing on intervening mechanisms that link hierarchically distal levels of analysis. Three-level models have emerged as a potential way to address these limitations. While the literature has clearly outlined the mechanics of how to estimate three-level models, there is very little, if any, guidance on when and how to integrate the use of such models with theory development. Consequently, IS researchers have little guidance to inform their decisions about integrating the use of three-level models with their theory development and testing. In this article, we identify the circumstances under which IS researchers should consider the use of three-level models, develop guidelines about how to map the use of three-level model estimation to the theoretical objectives, and provide an illustration of how to implement the guidelines.
