Design Theory for Societal Digital Transformation: The Case of Digital Global Health

Abstract: With societal challenges, including but not limited to human development, equity, social justice, and climate change, societal-level digital transformation (SDT) is of imminent relevance and theoretical interest. While building on local-level efforts, societal-level transformation is a nonlinear extension of the local level. Unfortunately, academic discourse on digital transformation has largely left SDT unaccounted for. Drawing on more than 25 years of intensive, interventionist research engagement with the digital transformation of public healthcare information management and delivery in more than 80 countries in the Global South, we contribute to theorizing SDT in the form of a design theory consisting of six interconnected design principles. These design principles articulate the interplay and tensions of accommodating over time increased diversity and flexibility in digital solutions, while simultaneously connecting local, national, and regional/ global efforts. inception in three townships in post-apartheid South Africa, different versions and configurations of the DHIS have been adopted by more than 80 countriesincluding all but two African countries south of the Sahara, Norway, and other "developed" countriesthrough the efforts of universities, ministries of health, international organizations, funding, and various other agencies. Its ambition highlights the concerns of equity, inclusiveness, and ideology-that is, making design "that matters" (Bødker & Kyng, 2018) for society.According to Markus and Rowe (2021), the study of SDT to date remains underresearched (cf. also Vial, 2019), despite its tremendous significance in the different facets of social life globally. This mirrors the general critique that Jørn Braa is a professor at the University of Oslo, Norway, where he has spent much of his professional career initiating, cultivating, and promoting interventionist research on and around the DHIS2/ HISP efforts. He is the "father" of the project. His work has been published in outlets including the MIS Quarterly, The Information Society, Information Technology for Development, and in books.Sundeep Sahay is a professor at the University of Oslo, Norway and for the last couple of decades has been engaged in the DHIS2/ HISP project, with a main focus on Asia in general and India in particular. His work has been published in outlets including MIS Quarterly, Information and Organization, Information Systems Research, and in books.Eric Monteiro is a professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and an adjunct professor at the University of Oslo. He has a long-term, low-intensity engagement with DHIS2/ HISP spanning more than two decades. Abstract: Increasingly firms seek and employ open source software (OSS) developers using digital platforms (e.g., LinkedIn and GitHub). OSS developers display their skills in a variety of ways on these platforms to attract firms. However, it remains unclear whether all OSS developer behaviors influence an OSS developer's firm mobility in the same way. Using an impression formation lens we examine how OSS developer behaviors enacted in digital platforms lead to firm mobility. Furthermore, we consider how an OSS developer's access to IT infrastructure may alter these relationships. We propose an archival data study to better understand these relationships. Implications of this study exist for the impression formation theoretical lens, OSS developers, firms that employ them, and the digital platforms that connect the two parties. Collapse

Abstract: Price fluctuation is a major concern for consumers in making travel plans, such as booking flights or hotels. Thus, consumers tend to hesitate over whether to make a booking or not. Online travel booking platforms such as Kayak, Hopper, and Google Flights, have been adopting various digital nudges to influence consumers' price expectations. For example, they may inform users that "Prices are unlikely to decrease within 7 days" (reassurance) or "Prices may rise within 7 days" (alert). Despite the pervasive adoption of reassurance and alert nudges in online travel booking, little is known about how they influence consumers' price expectations and travel booking behavior, and why. We plan to conduct a lab experiment and a randomized field experiment in collaboration with a leading travel metasearch platform to investigate how digital nudges like reassurance and alert may affect individuals' emotions, price expectations, and subsequent online travel booking behavior. Abstract: When IT work is performed through digital labor markets, IT professionals have a high degree of personal responsibility for their careers and must use appropriate strategies to be successful. This paper investigates the success of IT freelancers on digital labor platforms. Drawing on signaling theory, a dataset of 7166 IT freelancers is used to examine how activating, pointing, and supporting signals lead to success. Analysis was carried out using negative binomial regression. The results indicate that the three signaling types positively influence the objective career success of IT freelancers. This paper contributes to the literature by testing signaling theory in the new context of digital labor platforms, investigating IT specifics, and proposing support as a new type of signal for IT professionals on digital labor platforms. In practice, the results provide guidelines for IT freelancers to improve their success within their careers. Collapse

Abstract: Are centralised or decentralised strategies more suitable to address a developing nation's socio-economic challenges through information and communication technology (ICT)? We respond to this long-standing question by conceptualising ICT-enabled national development as a multi-level social process and by drawing on empirical findings from a natural experiment set in the context of health information system projects in Indonesia. Our study demonstrates that successful ICT-enabled national development is not contingent on pursuing one strategy or the other but on how micro-level actors interpret, and subsequently respond to, these strategies and the local changes they trigger. Our findings indicate that centralisation and decentralisation are complementary rather than competing strategies to ICT-enabled national development because, if integrated into a hybrid strategy, decentralisation enables local communities to achieve national development outcomes commonly attributed to centralisation. As such, our work provides empirical evidence, explanations and new theoretical insight into the wider ‘centralisation versus decentralisation’ debate, while also outlining avenues for future research and guidelines for policymakers. Abstract: Digital platforms attempting to penetrate markets and establish novel businesses need to not only seek market share and profit, but also to establish their legitimacy-that is, the social acceptability of their business operations. Information Systems and Management are just beginning to understand digital platform strategies for establishing legitimacy. There is also relatively little attention to how the special features of digital platforms influence their legitimation strategies. Through a multi-method study on ride-hailing platforms in Southeast Asia, I show that digital platforms trying to penetrate markets can wield known legitimation strategies in exceptional ways, as well as employ some manoeuvres that can be considered novel. I contribute to the literature on the strategic management of information systems by uncovering how platform features other than network effects, such as asset provision offloading and intermediation, accord strategic advantage to the legitimation efforts of digital platform firms. Abstract: The social commerce platform engages users in an agent-led network, leveraging local ties and communal trust. Agents are neighborhood influencers facilitating user referral, community engagement, and product marketing. We study the economic value of the agents to the platform based on their native endowed network externality and the trust formulated from the interaction with the users. Using detailed performance and referral data from a leading social commerce platform in Indonesia, we find that (1) agents with a higher level of endowed network externality outperform the ones with a lower level; (2) a more trustworthy and, surprisingly, less connected agent produces higher community sales; and (3) user's perceived benevolence of the agent positively moderates the referral effect. The results suggest that the platform faces a trade-off between capitalizing on agents' social connections and nurturing community trust. Collapse

Abstract: The devastating outbreaks of COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted social and economic sustainability of the world, particularly in routine services that require physical interactions, such as dining services. With the retrospective analysis via case study, we identified three cases in dining service from USA, Indonesia, Taiwan, respectively, and investigated their service systems with the Service-Dominant Logic to understand the interactions among actors and how they integrated resources to cope with the pandemic. We identified their resilient practices heavily relied on various types of social capital to quickly respond to demand shifts, reconnect value networks, and leverage ICTs for marketing and sales. These resilient practices could be used for guiding small and medium enterprises to cope with devastating unexpected crises, taking COVID-19 as an example. More cases collected and analyzed from corresponding regions in the follow-up study could further conclude a more general causal relationship in resilience toward the theory for resilience. Collapse

Abstract: Given the motivational effect of game elements and mechanisms on user experience in various non-game contexts, gamification has widely been used as an effective marketing technique to enhance the performance of business practices. In the past decade, a variety of studies have explored and investigated the value that gamification can provide in consumer-facing marketing activities. However, there is still a dearth of granular understanding of how gamification in marketing has been studied in the current literature. This paper follows the PRISMA literature review process and systematically reviews 93 papers consisting of 111 empirical studies on gamification and marketing management. The synthesized findings provide a holistic picture of the adopted research methods, different investigated gamification affordances and advergames, various gamified industries, and marketing performance indicators regarding products, services, and brands. However, factors such as the adoption of mobile phones create a favorable environment for mobile health technology, yielding a promising avenue for the development of the Global South through digital innovation. Previous studies, however, have not provided a comprehensive assessment of available tuberculosis applications and their features. To bridge this gap, we conducted a systematic review of existing tuberculosis applications to gain a deeper understanding of the current landscape. Our findings indicate that current tuberculosis apps have significant limitations, such as requiring an internet connection or being available in only one language. Our study contributes to extant research by presenting the first systematic analysis of tuberculosis applications and provides practical insights by highlighting areas of improvement that should be addressed in future app development.
