Abstract: Marginalized communities globally encounter grand challenges such as lack of access to education, healthcare, and sustained livelihoods. Several initiatives to address these complex, global problems have resulted in fragmented solutions. Recognizing this, there have been several calls for the study of responsible innovation (RI) to address grand challenges. Digital platforms such as AirBnB, Uber and so forth have now become commonplace and are known to generate economic value but also face criticism for being exploitative and exclusive. Only a handful of studies show how similar platforms can innovate responsibly to serve marginalized communities by generating simultaneous economic and social value. To address this gap, our study examines the cases of two platforms that orchestrated ecosystems consisting of individuals from marginalized communities, government agencies, and other entities to provide physical, digital and societal solutions based on principles of RI. We contribute to the RI and IS literatures to show how RI solutions can be fostered through digital platforms to address grand challenges. The article provides empirical evidence of all four dimensions of the RI framework—anticipation, reflexivity, inclusion, and responsiveness - and their operationalization through digital platforms. This research lays the foundation for future studies at the intersection of RI and digital platforms literature. The study also provides practice insights on developing digital platform solutions for marginalized communities to address grand challenges and is useful to policymakers to formulate appropriate interventions. It pushes the theoretical and practice boundaries of our understanding of RI and digital platforms. Collapse

Abstract: Although achieving strategic distinctiveness is critical for firms in dynamic industries, where the competitive landscape and market conditions frequently change, there is a paucity of research on the impact of information technology (IT) on a firm's strategic conformity (or distinctiveness). Motivated by the importance of strategic conformity and emergence of novel technologies, we draw on institutional theory and hypothesize that IT Novelty positively impacts strategic conformity. Second, drawing on resource-based view, we hypothesize that market dynamism and competitive dynamism negatively moderate the effect of IT Novelty on strategic conformity. Third, we hypothesize that the moderating impact is stronger for market dynamism than competitive dynamism. We find support for our hypotheses using a fifteen-year dataset from over 300 U.S. manufacturing firms. Our study contributes to theory and managerial practice by combining institutional and resource-based view perspectives to examine how IT Novelty shapes a firm's strategic conformity, particularly in dynamic industry conditions. Abstract: This study aims to investigate how firms can prepare for artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and how AI creates business values for adopting firms. We propose that, first, leveraging AI for value creation depends on the presence of an enabling resource foundation, consisting of a stack of technological and managerial resources. According to the real options theory, the stronger such a resource foundation is, the more valuable the option it creates for a firm to adopt AI, and consequently the firm is more likely to exercise the option to adopt. Second, we propose that, after adoption, the depth of AI use can have negative impacts on employee productivity, while the breadth of AI use can have positive impacts. We empirically validate these hypotheses based on a sample of 6,854 manufacturing firms in a coastal province in China. Collapse

Abstract: The advancement of blockchain technologies has created new opportunities for businesses to deliver new innovative offerings while improving their existing efficiencies to stay relevant and maintain the required competitive advantage. As such, blockchain technology has emerged as an opportunity to radically revolutionize and transform the banking and financial industry. This paper aims to bridge the existing gap in the literature by identifying empirically relevant opportunities and anticipated risks of blockchain transformation in the sector. This study collated and empirically analyzed the conceptualized model using a qualitative case study approach, culminating with specific recommendations. The findings highlight how the realization of blockchain technology value, competitive advantage, innovation and impact is required to develop successful implementation strategies. Similarly, acknowledging associated risks from scalability, Interoperability, security, and regulatory perspectives is equally vital to developing the necessary measures to guide its successful implementation. Abstract: Despite the intense efforts to substantiate the value co-creation capability of IT service, current approaches only partially address the complex and dynamic nature of the IT value-creation process. Popular IT service frameworks such as ITIL and COBIT mainly focus on discrete customer-centric practices and processes and overlook the importance of a holistic and systematic approach to understanding value co-creation. The research follows an interpretive approach to building a framework based on a case study and grounded theory technique in a higher educational institution. The initial findings reveal the micro, meso and macro levels of value co-creation in the IT service ecosystem. This research contributes to research on value creation in the context of IT service by providing the holistic approach of the service ecosystem to value creation, which has been barely investigated. Abstract: The lack of explainability remains a critical challenge to the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in many fields. "Understanding brings in trust", while machine-learning models offer superior prediction accuracy, understanding the underlying logic is equally important to foster trust in these models. In this paper, we present eXplainable AI (XAI) as a solution to this challenge. Our research focuses on three key aspects of XAI: mathematics, humanities and social sciences, and practical applications. We demonstrated the feasibility of XAI through the use of artificially-constructed and model-derived ground truth, and verified performances of different XAIs. We also explored three dimensions of explainable consistency and emphasized the significance of human-machine consistency. Finally, we applied our research to a real-world scenario by cooperating with a national bank in China. Our findings highlight that XAI is both mathematically and practically meaningful, but more efforts need to be dedicated to this human-machine communication field. Collapse

Abstract: Information technology (IT)-enabled taxi services facilitate people’s lives. However, little is known about how Internet taxi employees are motivated and how motivation relates to their job engagement. Using a mixedmethods design, this research explores intrinsic motivators and the effects of external regulations on intrinsic motivation and job engagement. The qualitative study identified three context-specific intrinsic motivators: stress reduction, self-efficacy, and job autonomy. A follow-up quantitative research revealed the significance of external regulations in determining intrinsic motivation and job engagement. The study contributes to knowl­ edge by emphasizing the role of intrinsic motivators and the significance of both monetary incentives and punishment. Collapse

Abstract: A key objective of data-driven transformations is to utilize big data analytics (BDA) to create data-driven business value (DDBV). While prior research shows the potential of BDA to achieve DDBV, the concept remains blurry and an overview of realizable DDBVs is still lacking. To better understand the multidimensionality of the DDBV concept and to obtain insights into the bandwidth of achievable DDBVs, we conducted a systematic review of the information systems literature. Based on our results, we present a comprehensive overview of 34 DDBVs, which are classified according to their tangibility and locus of value realization. Furthermore, we describe three research deficiencies: (1) the missing operationalization of the DDBV concept, (2) the lack of explanatory mechanisms for DDBV realization, and (3) missing qualitative, in-depth insights into DDBV realization processes. Future research may build upon our systematization and help closing these research gaps, thereby increasing the success likelihood of data-driven initiatives. Collapse
