Abstract: There is a growing interest in understanding the role of genetics in explaining heterogeneity in behaviors, including those related to information systems (IS). The majority of the recent genetics research focuses on searching the entire genome in genome-wide association studies (GWASs) to link DNA to human traits. The results of GWASs can be used on datasets to compute a measure of genetic propensity known as a polygenic score, or PGS. PGSs are widely viewed as the future of genetics research. We conducted an exploratory study, in the context of information technology (IT) use, to examine if the PGS approach can be used to better understand the role of genetics in IS research. Consistent with our hypotheses, genetic endowments associated with Educational Attainment and General Cognition positively predict technology use, and genetic endowments associated with Neuroticism, Depressive Symptoms, Myocardial Infarction, and Coronary Artery Disease negatively predict technology use more than half a century later (genetic endowments are established at conception and our sample consists of individuals aged 50 to 80). Many of the characteristics known to be associated with heterogeneity in IT use (e.g., trust, education) appear to be mediators linking PGSs to IT use. Nonetheless, a number of PGSs maintain meaningful direct effects.This appendix 26 provides additional background and details on molecular genetics, and some of the major issues surrounding the construction and use of GWASs and PGSs. Abstract: For increasing sustainability and mitigating climate change, corporate carbon risk management (CCRM) can be a key enabler. As we outline in this paper, companies currently lack processes and approaches in practice to actively manage complex risks caused by carbon emissions in the form of a comprehensive CCRM. To address this issue and to combine the contributions of currently separate research streams, e.g., corporate carbon accounting and corporate risk management, we develop a taxonomy that illustrates characteristics of IS-based solutions that foster an active CCRM. While our taxonomy builds on a systematic literature review, we evaluate our results with expert interviews. We conclude that CCRM is a complex field in which IS can provide significant support at many stages. Thereby, our taxonomy also contributes to Green IS research and acts as guidance for practitioners. Moreover, we discuss how Blockchains and Artificial Intelligence can pave the way towards targetoriented CCRM in companies. Collapse

Abstract: To cope with climate change, an effective reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is necessary. An acceleration of decarbonization still lacks an efficient way to precisely account GHG emissions. Recent literature acknowledges the role of Information Systems (IS) research, particularly Green IS, to contribute to decarbonization by enabling digital carbon accounting (CA). In this context, various scholars set out to design system architectures -often focusing on the energy sector due to its large potential for decarbonization. As research and practice lack a comprehensive overview (e.g., to develop standards), our work aims at reducing this identified gap by providing key characteristics of digital CA system architectures that we derive from an extensive, structured literature review and a consecutive deductive and descriptive approach. We argue that a stronger focus on both, user and identity management and interoperable registries, may be beneficial to foster digital CA. Collapse

Abstract: Information Systems (IS) among other Information Technology (IT) disciplines has been concerned with student recruitment while students in secondary education have little knowledge of the field and few end up choosing it as their career. We piloted an IS-oriented entrepreneurship course in a Finnish secondary school (aged 16-19) to examine how we can change student understanding of the IS/IT field. We gathered data through observation, questionnaires, essays, and teacher interviews, and returned two years later for a follow-up inquiry on how the course lived on in the school. In this article, we examine what kind of value was created for the stakeholders and study the negotiation of meanings around the image of IS/IT by the students and the teacher. We contribute insights on the collaboration that serves as a form of marketing of IS education and point to factors that can affect the continued existence of this kind of course. Collapse

Abstract: Crowdfunding projects have been the subject of contrasting narratives. To many, they are the antithesis of predatory bottom-line business ventures, and to others, they are an under-regulated vehicle for immature, or unscrupulous project owners to exploit inexperienced and vulnerable investors. These differences are significant, given many use crowdfunding to build public awareness and project a positive image. We use the myth of Prometheus – the Greek god associated with “defiant progress” and technological advancement – as a sensitising lens to build a set of competing, dialectic archetypes. We then apply these archetypes through a Hegelian dialectic analysis of three high-profile crowdfunding campaigns. The overarching contribution of the study is that it provides a foundation for discussion of the positive and negative narratives surrounding crowdfunded project owners and explicates the limitations of crowdfunding as an enabler of positive systemic change. The dialectic approach provides a systematic means of identifying the essence of disagreement between narratives. While it may be too early to predict the outcomes for emerging technology-driven initiatives such as crowdfunding, the use of myth offers a sophisticated means to look for “rhyming” phenomena, where the phenomena at play are similar to the grand frailties of humankind throughout history. Abstract: In Information Systems (IS) research, emotions are primarily measured using facial expressions of participants or self-reported survey results. To unite both measurement foci, we analyze the impact of facial emotional reactions to computer-induced stimuli on self-reported evaluations towards the respective stimulus by using a multi-method experimental approach with multi-channel analysis. We collected emotional expressions of happiness of 176 participants using eye-tracker and webcam technology together with a post-experimental survey. We contribute to IS research by supplementing self-reported measures of emotion with a physical emotional measure in response to a system’s feature, and by relating these measured emotional physical responses to individual behavior. Abstract: Responsible AI (RAI) is an emerging topic in the Information Systems (IS) literature. RAI entails ensuring ethical, transparent, and accountable use of AI technologies in line with societal values, expectations, and norms. The challenge for research on IS education at university level is to accompany the growing research on RAI with approaches to educate students about this emerging theme. Research on IS education on responsible AI remains scarce to date, however. We ask: How can we design a course to educate students about responsible AI? We build on earlier research and an experiential learning-based approach to propose a course design promoting students' multidisciplinary, problembased learning about RAI applied to the case of public welfare services. Our study is based on participatory observations of student groups and group interviews after a project, acting as an arena where the students could reflect on the learning process and evolving awareness of RAI. Abstract: Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) allows researchers to study how configurations of conditions lead to outcomes and, thereby, richly explain the dynamics of complex digital phenomena. To advance discussion on QCA in the information systems (IS) discipline, we introduce its fundamental concepts and offer guidelines for authors on how to apply QCA to advance IS research. We also provide checklists for reviewers of QCA papers. We illustrate how to apply our guidelines through two exemplar studies. In the first exemplar study, we focus on IT-business strategic alignment to study the influence that different forms of alignment have on firm performance. In the second exemplar study, we use the perspective of the integrated technology acceptance model to explain an individual’s intention to use a digital assistant. The contrasting results from both studies highlight how to use QCA to derive robust and reproducible results. By doing so, we contribute to encouraging IS scholars to use QCA to develop sophisticated models that accurately depict real-world IS phenomena. Collapse

Abstract: The COVID19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented unemployment crisis. But new op portunities emerged in gig economy to support a flexible form of labor participation. In our research, we study the response of gig economy to various pandemic mitigation poli cies. Leveraging novel, populationscale, and highfrequency location data, we present our evidence on the impact of COVID19 policies on gig economy. We find that (1) gig jobs remain resilient throughout the crisis, suffering fewer job losses than the traditional labor market; (2) the gig sector absorbed the nongig labor losses during the crisis; (3) the gig economy boosts resilience of the disadvantaged, curbing job losses more in Black neighborhoods; and (4) gig workers adapted their work hours to suit the populations' changing circadian rhythms. Our findings highlight the resilience of gig economy in the face of an unprecedented public health crisis and the importance of gig jobs to vulnerable populations. Collapse

Abstract: Persuasive designs, including gamification and digital nudging, have become well renowned during the last years and have been implemented successfully across different sectors including education, e-health, egovernance, e-finance and general information systems. In this regard, persuasive design can support desirable changes in attitude and behavior of users in order to achieve their own goals. However, such persuasive influence on individuals raises ethical questions as persuasive designs can impair the autonomy of users or persuade the user towards goals of a third party and hence lead to unethical decision-making processes. In human-computer interaction this is especially significant with the advent of advanced artificial intelligence that can emulate human behavior and thus bring new dynamics into play. Therefore, we conduct a systematic literature analysis with the goal to compile an overview of ethical considerations for persuasive system design, derive potential guidelines for ethical persuasive designs and shed light on potential research gaps.
