Abstract: Anthropomorphic Technology (AT) is technology that is human-like in design and motivates anthropomorphism. Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human-like characteristics to nonhuman objects. Extant research informs user responses of familiarity and acceptance to AT, but also withdrawal from and rejection of AT. There is little integration of research on this topic. We examine and synthesize studies on user responses to AT published in leading IS journals. We identify kinds of anthropomorphic design and dimensions, and find that although most research demonstrates a positive influence of humanlike design on user response, many factors can moderate this effect. We recognize these factors and propose directions for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Organizational decision-makers need to evaluate AI tools in light of increasing claims that such tools outperform human experts. Yet, measuring the quality of knowledge work is challenging, raising the question of how to evaluate AI performance in such contexts. We investigate this question through a field study of a major U.S. hospital, observing how managers evaluated five different machine-learning (ML) based AI tools. Each tool reported high performance according to standard AI accuracy measures, which were based on ground truth labels provided by qualified experts. Trying these tools out in practice, however, revealed that none of them met expectations. Searching for explanations, managers began confronting the high uncertainty of experts' know-what knowledge captured in ground truth labels used to train and validate ML models. In practice, experts address this uncertainty by drawing on rich know-how practices, which were not incorporated into these ML-based tools. Discovering the disconnect between AI's know-what and experts' know-how enabled managers to better understand the risks and benefits of each tool. This study shows dangers of treating ground truth labels used in ML models objectively when the underlying knowledge is uncertain. We outline implications of our study for developing, training, and evaluating AI for knowledge work. Collapse

Abstract: Digitalization permeates entire companies. Rethinking information systems (IS) success models developed in the 1980/1990s becomes obvious. But how does one define such a new model and implement it? Taking an SAP S/4HANA migration as our use case, the new triple "E" rating on hand focuses on the IS success of digital technologies by balancing efficiency, effectiveness, and experience criteria. Six takeaways emerge from our case study that should drive future discussion: (1) Evaluate digital technologies by adopting a simple but comprehensive approach including criteria beyond efficiency.(2) Consider diverse IS success perspectives consciously but never lose focus on the enduser. (3) A triad of efficiency, effectiveness, and experience encompasses the challenges of digital technologies. (4) Separate efficiency and effectiveness criteria, however, consider trade-offs between them. (5) The experience category highlights digital awareness and socio-technical changes. (6) Tailor your triple "E" rating individually to your project. Collapse

Abstract: With cloud and mobile computing, information systems (IS) evolve towards mass-market services. While user involvement is critical for IS success, the IS discipline lacks methods that allow integrating the "voice of the customer" in the case of mass-market services with individual and dispersed users. Conjoint analysis (CA), from marketing research, allows for understanding user preferences and measures user trade-offs for multiple product features simultaneously. While CA has gained popularity in the IS domain, the existing studies have mostly been one-time efforts and no cumulative research patterns have been observed. We argue that CA could have a significant impact on IS research (and practice) if it were fully developed and adopted as a method in IS. From reviewing 70 CA studies published between 1999 and 2019 in the IS field, we find that CA can be leveraged in the initial conceptualization, iterative design and evaluation of IS and their business models. We critically assess the methodological choices along the CA procedure to provide recommendations and guidance on "how" to leverage CA techniques in future IS research. We then synthesize our findings into a "Framework for Conjoint Analysis Studies in IS" that outlines "where" CA can be applied along the IS lifecycle. Collapse

Abstract: Business Process Management Systems (BPMSs) provide automated support for the execution of business processes in modern organisations. With the emergence of cloud computing, BPMS deployment considerations are shifting from traditional on-premise models to the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) paradigm, aiming at delivering Business Process Automation as a Service. However, scaling up a traditional BPMS to cope with simultaneous demand from multiple organisations in the cloud is challenging, since its underlying system architecture has been designed to serve a single organisation with a single process engine. Moreover, the complexity in addressing both the dynamic execution environment and the elasticity requirements of users impose further challenges to deploying a traditional BPMS in the cloud. A typical SaaS often deploys multiple instances of its core applications and distributes workload to these application instances via load balancing. But, for stateful and often long-running process instances, standard stateless load balancing strategies are inadequate. In this article, we propose a conceptual design of BPMS capable of addressing dynamically varying demands of end users in the cloud, and present a prototypical implementation using an open source traditional BPMS platform. Both the design and system realisation offer focused strategies on achieving scalability and demonstrates the system capabilities for supporting both upscaling, to address large volumes of user demand or workload, and downscaling, to release underutilised computing resources, in a cloud environment. Abstract: The integration of products and services into a bundled product/service offering by manufacturing organisations is seen as a global trend in today’s competitive business environment. The shift of product-based manufacturers towards offering business solutions and value-added services to consumers is termed as ‘Servitization’. Contrary to the potential benefits expected by adding service activities to the offerings, advocates voice their concerns towards experiential problems and challenges in employing the servitization strategy – termed as ‘Servitization Paradox’. Nevertheless, the shift from product-based delivery to a service-based provision has the potential to significantly impact on developing sustainable and eco-friendly environment. To provide greater insights to the servitization phenomenon, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the servitization implementation in manufacturing organisations. In order to respond to the latter, we propose the following three research questions “Q1 – what are the different types of servitization strategies”, “Q2 – what are the different servitization definitions”, “Q3 – what are the potential benefits in selecting a servitization strategy?”, “Q4 – what are the challenges in transitioning towards servitization?”. A systematic literature review is carried out to understand the past trends and extant patterns/themes in the servitization strategy research area, evaluate contributions, summarise knowledge, thereby identifying limitations, implications and potential further research avenues. The key findings confirm servitization studies have contributed both conceptually and empirically to the development and accumulation of intellectual wealth to the manufacturing operations and supply chain discipline. Moreover, the findings clearly indicate the potential of servitization in transitioning manufacturing organisations (e.g. benefits) and utilising innovative technologies to generate business value. Abstract: Lagging IT security investments in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) point towards a security divide between SME and large enterprises, yet our structured literature review shows that organizational IT security research has largely neglected the SME context. In an effort to expose reasons for this divide, we build on extant research to conceptualize SME-specific characteristics in a framework and suggest propositions regarding their influence on IT security investments. Based on 25 expert interviews, emerging constraints are investigated and validated. Our findings imply that several widely held assumptions in extant IT security literature should be modified if researchers claim generalizability of their results in an SME context. Exemplary assumptions include the presence of skilled workforce, documented processes or IT-budget planning which are often un(der) developed in SME. Additionally, our study offers context-specific insights regarding particular effects of identified constraints on IT security investments for all involved stakeholders (researchers, SME, large enterprises, governments). Abstract: This paper presents a grounded theory approach to develop a comprehensive model for positioning strategies for the digital transformation. The result with four distinct scenarios based on an analogy with project management is informed by current literature and empirical data including interviews, focus groups and a workshop. The model contributes to the understanding of strategy alignment in transformative situations, and both has a structural component but also addresses contextual factors as well as implications for strategic processes. These results can be used by researchers as a categorization framework for research on digital transformation and its outcomes based on the positioning and richer understanding of contextual factors, but also very directly by practitioners looking for templates on how to design strategic processes and alignment. Abstract: The purpose of this research is to create an overview of the existing literature on the e-health evaluation and to identify, categorize and analyze the criteria of e-health evaluation in order to inform the policy makers, practitioners and researchers. A scoping literature review on the criteria of e-health evaluation was conducted. Two sets of keywords were searched in databases: e-health (and synonyms) and evaluation (and synonyms). The criteria of selection include 1) articles published in top journals with high impact factor 2) conducting an empiric study on e-health evaluation. 3) written in English. A conceptual framework on technology evaluation is used to classify existing health IT evaluations into organizational (macro) level and individual (micro) level. In addition to revealing the complexity of e-health evaluation, this article has spotted the gap of « market evaluation » in health IT in the existing literature. Collapse
