Abstract: The increasing use of information technology artifacts in daily life makes security a shared responsibility of both users and companies. In recent years, increasing a user’s objective (i.e., actual) security knowledge and providing applications with more secure default settings appear among the most ubiquitous tools companies use to broaden their efforts to help users make more secure decisions. Examining both solutions matters because they are widely used, cost effective, and understood by many security practitioners. Additionally, default settings and users’ objective knowledge provide anchors for decision-making. However, human errors and insecure default settings are increasing and raising further questions about the efficacy of such efforts. Using the theory of bounded ra­ tionality, we investigated the role of objective, subjective (i.e., self-assessed) security knowledge, and default settings security level on the overall decision security. We found that objective security knowledge can lead to secure decisions when paired with high subjective security knowledge. In the absence of the latter, objective security knowledge is unable to lead to better security decisions. Furthermore, subjective security knowledge reduces the extent to which users fully accept default security settings, thereby mitigating bias toward insecure default settings. Collapse

Abstract: Non-experts struggle in human-AI collaboration due to AI's differences from more traditional technologies, such as inscrutability. Meanwhile, information systems research on AI education primarily focuses on students in formal learning settings and neglects non-expert adults. Applying a design science research approach, we develop a learning application ("AiLingo") as an informal learning experience to advance nonexpert adults' AI literacy. Based on self-determination theory, we deduct design principles and features tailored to non-expert adults. Through experimental evaluation (n = 101), we find that a learning experience with our design features present (vs. absent) leads to greater AI literacy advancement. Additionally, we find downstream effects of AI literacy, as it increases AI usage continuance intention and leads to a more positive attitude toward AI. Our study contributes to AI literacy and educational literature with a perspective on non-expert adults, novel design knowledge for AI education, and the discovery of crucial AI literacy consequences. Abstract: A sustainable digital future of education is at its high call and various digital tools are being used to establish digital learning -but limited attention is paid to quality and virtual competence for the success of Digital Learning System (DLs). This study addresses the gap and outlines satisfaction as a function of quality factors (perceived knowledge quality and interactive quality) and virtual competence that subsequently determines net benefits (perceived learning). DLs success model is proposed by mapping into sequential building blocks of DeLone and McLean IS success model and integrating social cognitive theory. Quantitative online survey data from 156 German and Swedish students confirm that perceived knowledge quality, sociability-based interactive quality, and virtual competence play an important role towards students' satisfaction and perceived learning. The salient highlighted factors provide a novel contribution deemed indispensable for DLs success. The findings suggest future research avenues for theory and practice. Collapse

Abstract: To increase diversity and inclusion in IT enrollment and employment, we must first answer the question: What makes one intrinsically interested in technology in the first place? To the extent that one’s choice of an IT education and career is driven by such intrinsic interest, the answer to this question will inform the various educational and organizational efforts to enhance social inclusion through increasing neurodiversity and gender diversity. Building on prior literature on the empathizing-systemizing (E-S) theory of autism, we employ two studies to explore the influences of autistic tendency and gender on intrinsic interest in IT. In Study 1, survey data from a U.S. sample provide support for autistic tendency as an antecedent of IT interest. The data also show that after controlling for individual variations in autistic tendency, the seemingly higher IT interest exhibited by U.S. men versus women becomes nonsignificant, demonstrating autistic tendency as an underlying mechanism by which differences in IT interest manifest between men and women. In Study 2, we replicate the model with respondents from India. Survey results again provide support for autistic tendency as an antecedent of IT interest and further show that there exists no significant gender difference in IT interest in India, regardless of whether autistic tendency is controlled for. This research offers a belated academic acknowledgment of the autism-IT linkage for the IS field and a comprehensive introduction of the E-S theory as a theoretical lens for multiple areas of IS research, including social inclusion, adoption, neuroIS, and evolutionary theory building. The finding of a nonsignificant difference in IT interest between men and women in the U.S. and India dispels a gender stereotype and demonstrates that collective-level gender labels may yield misleading results when individual-level factors, such as autistic tendency, masquerade as gender differences. Abstract: The proliferation of social networking sites (SNS) is increasing SNS habit and addiction. The increasing use of SNS has been known to augment cyberbullying perpetration. Even though habit has been argued to be a multidimensional trait comprising of awareness, control, and efficiency, literature in IS has mostly measured SNS, and IT use habits using a unidimensional scale. Our paper develops a novel second-order multidimensional scale to measure SNS habit and tests its validity by examining it in a nomological network of SNS addiction and cyberbullying perpetration along with network homophily and perceived value of liberal education. Our study shows that network homophily and perceived value of liberal education play a diagonally opposite moderating role, such that homophily intensifies, whereas liberal education lowers the impact of addiction on cyberbullying perpetration. Data were collected using MTurk workers and analyzed using SmartPLS. Theoretical, practical, and pedagogical implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: We investigated how people react emotionally to working with robots in three scenario-based role-playing survey experiments collected in 2019 and 2020 from the United States (Study 1: N = 1003; Study 2: N = 969, Study 3: N = 1059). Participants were randomly assigned to groups and asked to write a short post about a scenario in which we manipulated the number of robot teammates or the size of the social group (work team vs. organi­ zation). Emotional content of the corpora was measured using six sentiment analysis tools, and sociodemographic and other factors were assessed through survey questions and LIWC lexicons and further analyzed in Study 4. The results showed that people are less enthusiastic about working with robots than with humans. Our findings suggest these more negative reactions stem from feelings of oddity in an unusual situation and the lack of social interaction. Collapse

Abstract: In the contemporary business environment, the innovation and quality of the Information Technology (IT) industry’s products and services depend to a grea t extent on the knowledge, ability and talent applied by IT professionals. IT professionals’ skills and capacities to integrate, build, and reconfigure resources in the continuously evolving business environments is critical. In particular, inefficiencies usually come from the lack of sk ills or IT professionals’ inability to apply them in a way that allows a firm to adapt and evolve concurrently with business demands. With these challenges in mind, this paper presents a study conducted with 72 IT professionals to test the importance that data analytics, entrepreneurial, and business skills have in enhancing employees’ dynamic capabilities and ultimately their perceived work performance. This study confirms that there is an important association between the three types of sk ills and employees’ ability to effectuate action that hel p s a firm evolve. By fostering such a capacity which is critical in modern day firms, their perception about their work performance is ultimately affected. Collapse

Abstract: There is significant information asymmetry in the information technology (IT) outsourcing market. Clients are uncertain about vendors’ capabilities and vendors are uncertain about clients’ requirements. Prior literature has examined many devices to reduce such information asymmetry, e.g., vendor reputation, client-vendor prior relationship, vendors’ Capability Maturity Model (CMM) rating, vendor location, and technological diversity of the vendor. We examine the impact of (to our knowledge) a hitherto unconsidered device, i.e., the use of an advisor. In the context of global sourcing, third-party advisors, with their accumulated knowledge of client requirements and the vendor landscape, can mitigate the information asymmetry between clients and vendors. However, in an extensive data set of IT outsourcing contracts going back two decades we found use of advisors to be rare (less than 5% of contracts go through an advisor). This motivates us to rigorously analyze their impact on clients and vendors as an open empirical question. Using a data set of 753 large IT outsourcing contracts, and through a series of econometric specifications and robustness tests, we establish that the presence of an advisor is associated with higher revenue for vendors and more positive contract outcomes. This analysis presents what is to our knowledge the first concrete evidence that third-party advisors can mitigate the information asymmetry in the IT outsourcing market and lead to better matching that benefits clients as well as vendors. Abstract: The IT labor market's increased appetite for IT workers who hold no formal IT education has raised concerns regarding the value of formal IT education. On that account, this study draws on human capital theory and examines whether formal IT education commands a premium over non-IT education in early IT careers. Using data from the U.S. NLSY97 cohort, we examine the wage value of formal IT education by employing a hierarchical linear modeling technique. We find that early career IT professionals (i.e. IT majors) who hold formal IT education receive higher wages than early career IT professionals who hold non-IT education. In addition, we find that IT experience complements formal IT education in determining wages of early career IT professionals. We discuss the implications of our findings for research and practice. Abstract: Due to the growing importance of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, universities and corporate training programs have included such systems into their curricula using novel tools, such as ERP simulation games. To improve our understanding of individuals’ learning patterns, in this study we extend prior cognition based models by incorporating emotions. Moreover, we highlight the role of perceived radicalness, which mediates the relationship between emotions and individual willingness to learn. Our research model draws from the appraisal tendency framework and includes four distinct classes of emotions: challenge, achievement, loss, and deterrence emotions. We conducted a lab experiment to test the model in an ERP simulation game context. The preliminary results indicate that perceived radicalness is an important mechanism via which classes of emotions impact students' learning behaviors. We also found that, in general, negative emotions had more effect on radicalness perceptions compared to positive emotions. Collapse
