Abstract: This paper argues that in the current data-rich environment, organizations need formal policies for privacy as a way to avoid “privacy disasters”. Privacy disasters can occur when a company uses consumer data in a way that is legal, but violates public norms for acceptable use. The paper uses a case study to illustrate the elements that often characterize privacy disasters, and describes the principles and processes that can serve as the basis of a privacy policy capable of helping organizations avoid these negative events. The paper also highlights the implications of big data for privacy policy. Collapse

Abstract: Computer self-efficacy is one of the more important constructs in information systems (IS) research. Over the years, IS researchers have debated about its multifaceted nature. Yet, despite, extensive debate, we contend that for information systems, the conceptualization of various self-efficacy dimensions is incomplete. The primary dimension currently focused on is the specificity of the technology. This has resulted in two types of self-efficacy being investigated: computer self-efficacy and specific computer self-efficacy. However, the task being performed with technology has received limited attention in information systems self-efficacy research and discussions. We argue that there are four distinct types of computer self-efficacy constructs that are derived from combining the dimensions of specificity of information technology (specific/general) and task type (simple/complex) into a 2x2 model. Using data gathered from a quasi-experimental study, we illustrate how these constructs are not only theoretically different but also have a distinct measurement item set. Implications for expanding self-efficacy research are discussed at the end. Collapse

Abstract: Digital music formats and the Internet as a distribution mechanism have fundamentally disrupted the music industry by altering the way music is packaged, distributed, and consumed. This disruptive innovation has come in two stages. First, it enabled music to be purchased as an individual song (digital single) or as an album (digital album) or to be enjoyed without paying for it (unlicensed digital music). More recently, music has become available as a streaming service (streaming music). Prior to these innovations, music was primarily distributed as an album using a physical medium such as the CD. Building on multi-generation diffusion models, we identify and quantify different types of concurrent demand migration in the music industry such as generational substitution, unbundling, and piracy effects in the first stage and streaming effects in the subsequent stage. Measuring the relative contributions of factors that drive each of these different migration types, we find that the introduction of licensed digital downloads (digital single and digital album) has weakened the piracy effect. Since the introduction of licensed digital downloads, the piracy effect on the demand for CDs has decreased about 15 percent every year. At the same time, unbundling, rather than piracy, has become the dominant factor in the decline of industry revenue. More recently, streaming music services such as Pandora have moved demand from digital albums to streaming music. However, demand has not yet migrated from digital singles to streaming music. The introduction of streaming music has further weakened the piracy effect by about 7 percent every year. Collapse

Abstract: Individuals choice decisions between hedonic and media technologies have not been considered so far, even if the adoption of one media technology usually does not rule out the adoption of another technology. The consideration of choice behavior in the context of media technologies is beneficial for IS research, because it provides further insight in personal usage behavior. Content producers are currently left with-out theoretical models to explain regular decisions between media technologies. We thus focus in our study on the choice between different media technologies by starting with a validated model and extending it with the habitual use, because habits account for almost the half of media consumption. To analyze the effect strength of habits in the decision between multiple media technologies, we adopt a multi study analysis across two different pairs of fully substitutable media technology pairs. Both studies do not show a measureable impact of habitual usage of one technology on the usage of another technology, despite the statistical significance of the relationship in both studies. The effect sizes of those relationships are 0 in both cases. We conclude that that other determinants play an important role in the situational choices between multiple media technologies. Collapse

Abstract: Recent research in IT adoption indicates that users do not always acknowledge the objective superiority of new technologies and stay with incumbent technologies for reasons like habits, inertia, overuse, or even addiction. The theoretical scope on the phenomena around hesitant switching behaviors or even resistance to switch, is often based on the explanatory approaches to the question of why individuals refuse to switch to apparently superior technologies and how switching can be assisted. The results of this research have succeeded in providing theoretical and empirical explanations to the question why individuals don’t take the step towards a new system, but they have not explained why individual users maybe intentionally and determinedly stay with incumbent technologies. With our study we turn the question and investigate what mechanism leads to the deliberate choice of an incumbent technology and overrules a cognitive evaluation of a technology. We turn to attachment theory and apply its theoretical foundation to our research objective. The findings of our data analysis suggest that technology attachment is a strong predictor of actual usage and provide the first evidence for the existence of technology attachment. Collapse

Abstract: Social media is a desirable Big Data source used to examine the relationship between crime and social behavior. Observation of this connection is enriched within a geographic information system (GIS) rooted in environmental criminology theory, and produces several different results to substantiate such a claim. This paper presents the construction and implementation of a GIS artifact producing visualization and statistical outcomes to develop evidence that supports predictive crime analysis. An information system research prototype guides inquiry and uses crime as the dependent variable and a social media tweet corpus, operationalized via natural language processing, as the independent variable. This inescapable realization of social media as a predictive crime variable is prudent; researchers and practitioners will better appreciate its capability. Inclusive visual and statistical results are novel, represent state-of-the-art predictive analysis, increase the baseline R2 value by 7.26%, and support future predictive crime-based research when frontrun with real-time social media. Abstract: Applying behavioral economic theories, we hypothesize that consumers have sticky reference prices for individual information goods, but their perceived value for customizable bundle offers can be significantly influenced by the framing of a multipart pricing scheme. The potential impacts of these framing effects are measurable changes in consumer behavior and sales outcomes. We conducted a series of behavioral experiments and a large-scale natural field experiment involving actual purchases of customized information good bundles to confirm and analyze the hypothesized effects. The results demonstrate a consumer's willingness to purchase a customized bundle of information goods, the size of the resulting bundling, and the consumer's perceptions of the transaction are each significantly influenced by the design of the multipart pricing scheme. These results hold even when the final price and size of a customized bundle are the same across differing schemes. We discuss the potential tradeoffs in economic outcomes that result from price framing (e.g., likelihood of sale versus size of purchased bundles) and the implications for information good retailers. Abstract: With the rapid development of information technology, the World Wide Web has been widely used in various applications, such as search engines, online learning and electronic commerce. These applications are used by a diverse population of users with heterogeneous backgrounds, in terms of their knowledge, skills, and needs. Therefore, human factors are key issues for the development of Web-based applications, leading research into human factors to grow significantly in the past decade. This paper identifies and reviews three important human factors that have been examined in existing empirical studies, including gender differences, prior knowledge, and cognitive styles. The main results from the analysis include that: (a) females have more disorientation problems than males; (b) flexible paths are more beneficial to experts while structured content is more useful to novices; and (c) Field Dependent and Field Independent users prefer to employ different search strategies. Abstract: Web-based corporate training is increasingly being used by virtue of the fact that companies need to train their personnel equitably by imparting large amounts of knowledge in an affordable manner. However, it is difficult to establish the precise nature of the key success factors in these endeavors. In other words, companies are not aware of what factors actually influence the final outcome of this kind of initiative. Therefore, this research seeks to investigate some critical success factors associated with a Web-based corporate training program deployed by one of the largest insurance groups in Brazil. As a result, one may conclude that constructivist pedagogical philosophy, authentic task orientation and integral metacognitive support, applied in conjunction, are critical factors for the success of these endeavors. Furthermore, one may also conclude that an intrinsic source of motivation as well as open structural flexibility, applied singly, have some influence on the success of Web-based corporate training.
