Abstract: Following the [2007][2008][2009] financial crisis, the proliferation of FinTech innovations has posed several challenges for regulators. To overcome the dual challenge of simultaneously tightening control and facilitating a conducive environment for innovations, regulators have recently started a series of regulatory initiatives. Our study focuses on one such initiative in the form of regulatory sandboxes, where we examine how regulatory sandboxes help regulators in regulating FinTech innovations. We collect and analyze archival records of several regulatory sandboxes across the globe based on an integration of the taxonomy building and case study approach. Preliminary findings demonstrate three broad categories of sandboxes-the ones designed as learning devices, the ones designed as controlling devices and the others designed as hybrid devicesserving very distinct objectives. Our study intends to contribute to the emergent literature on regulatory sandboxes, as well as the broader phenomenon of open regulation in general. Collapse

Abstract: Many studies have investigated why users engage in digital piracy. The theoretical explanations are particularistic, and the empirical findings are fragmented, sometimes divergent, and reveal unexplained variations of effects. Managers and academics have thus had little guidance on how to explain and combat digital piracy. To help fill this gap, the present meta-analysis synthesizes past research on digital piracy and accumulates 1,373 effect sizes from 174 studies collected in 36 countries. The meta-analysis identifies the key drivers of users’ engagement in digital piracy and tests a new, comprehensive model that integrates all prior theoretical perspectives—social influence and control, outcome evaluation, dilemma solving, and reinforcement. The model explains 42%–53% of the variance in digital piracy attitudes, intentions, and behaviors and identifies the reinforcement perspective as the strongest theory. A moderator analysis shows that the influence of key drivers varies with cultural dimensions linked to the theoretical perspectives—individualism moderates social influence and control variables, masculinity moderates dilemma-solving variables, and uncertainty avoidance moderates reinforcement variables. These findings provide guidance for future digital piracy research and also have managerial implications in terms of possible revisions to antipiracy measures. Collapse

Abstract: Situated in an emirate’s farming industry, this ethnographic study develops a framework to help bridge the existing knowledge gap about what and how local contexts interact with emerging technology, RFID in particular. Findings suggest that numerous local factors pertaining to the researched emirate’s unique environmental, project, cultural, and societal/political contexts shape and/or are reshaped by RFID implementation. For example, geographic landscape demands systems modification and device adaptation; religious custom increases project difficulty, and the systems, in turn, requires changes in certain religious practice; the notion of social sustainability establishes objectives for RFID project, while the latter helps reshape social welfare systems. As these local factors have rarely been empirically examined, my framework can help contribute to future RFID implementation in different local contexts. More specifically, insights gained urge stakeholders involved to carefully manage unique factors of the emirate or similar contexts for intended RFID projects. The findings also suggest that stakeholders should be aware of RFID’s reshaping effects on the local context particularly because those effects might be unexpected. Collapse

Abstract: This paper reviews key concepts from the resource-based theory (RBT) of the firm, including evidence of “empirical support” for RBT. However, the paper then turns the conventional logic of empirical testing of RBT on its head, and argues that all that empirical testing does is to show researchers’ success in identifying valuable, rare, inimitable, and non-substitutable (VRIN) resources. Examining the IS literature from this perspective, the paper identifies a number of resources that really do seem to have been sources of competitive advantage. It concludes with recommendations on how RBT should be used in future strategic IS research. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines the effect of five factors on the adoption of electronic commerce among small and medium enterprises in Brunei Darussalam. A review of the literature shows that owner characteristics such as lack of perceived relative advantage, lack of knowledge, and perceived lack of trust are significant inhibitors while environment characteristics such as competitive pressure and, government support are significant motivators of electronic commerce in Brunei Darussalam. A questionnaire survey was conducted in 360 small and medium enterprises. A total of 184 valid responses were obtained. Stratified random sampling was adopted over other techniques to enhance representativeness. Data analysis shows that significant relationship exists between each of the five variables and electronic commerce adoption among small and medium enterprises in Brunei Darussalam. This study concludes that the five factors explain more than fifty percent of the variation in small and medium enterprises adoption. Competitive pressure emerged as the most important factor in terms of relative importance. This factor is followed by IT knowledge, relative advantage, security and government support. Collapse

Abstract: Current information systems (IS) literature has paid considerable attention to measuring the computer attitudes of students and schoolteachers. Computer attitudes of non-computing academics working particularly in technical colleges have, however, received scant attention. Moreover, studies on computer attitudes among Asian academics are least reported. Keeping this in view, this study was undertaken by validating an instrument to measure computer attitudes of non-computing academics working among technical colleges in Brunei Darussalam. This study also identified factors that contributed to the formation of computer attitudes of academics. This was achieved by undertaking a survey of 192 non-computing academics from four technical colleges. Attributes related to demographics and education of academics appeared to have little impact on computer attitudes. In contrast, ownership of a personal computer (PC) and level of computer skill were found to be important. Collapse
