Abstract: Even though digitization is a topic of high interest and promises remarkable benefits for the German manufacturing industry, it is still in its development phase. Thus, necessities arising from it are not predictable, yet. A great obstacle that will occur is the appropriate qualification of employees at all levels, sectors and firm sizes. The integration of new technologies will have radical impact on the role and job profile of all staff members as they alter the requirements across the whole value chain and lead to new processes. Latest studies showed that an insufficient qualification of employees is one of the greatest challenges for a successful digitization. Thus, to regain a globally leading position in the manufacturing industry German companies, especially small and medium sized enterprises (SME), need to qualify their employees appropriately. The LTA-FIT model is an approach that aims to face these challenges. Collapse

Abstract: Intrinsic to the transition towards, and necessary for the success of digital platforms as a service (at scale) is the notion of human computation. Going beyond ‘the wisdom of the crowd’, human computation is the engine that powers platforms and services that are now ubiquitous like Duolingo and Wikipedia. In spite of increasing research and population interest, several issues remain open and in debate on largescale human computation projects. Quality control is first among these discussions. We conducted an experiment with three different tasks of varying complexity and five different methods to distinguish and protect against constantly underperforming contributors. We illustrate that minimal quality control is enough to repel constantly underperforming contributors and that this is constant across tasks of varying complexity. Collapse

Abstract: In 2017, 65.6 million people were forcibly displaced from their homes according to UNHCR (2017). Member countries of the EU-28 received a record number of submitted asylum applications, reaching 1.20 million based on Eurostat (2016) database. Being the country with the highest number of asylum seekers in Europe (BAMF, 2015; BBC, 2016), Germany is the focus of our current. Due to the unprecedented dependency of refugees on ICT, we investigate in this research study to investigate how e-learning can be used to support refugees in the integration process and contributes to their social inclusion into the host country. We use qualitative research methods to gather deep insights into this issue. 28 face-face interviews were conducted with refugees in Germany, in the area of Berlin and Brandenburg. In this paper, we report on our findings, including; legal regulations, e-learning channels, learning formats, creativity using e-learning, challenges and obstacles. Collapse

Abstract: Industry 4.0 is still in its development phase and it promises to bring remarkable benefits to the manufacturing industry around the world when employing the Smart Factory application in large organizations and their supply chains. However, there is a risk of a miss-match when trying to introduce Industry 4.0 to Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) as the concept is mainly being developed around large manufacturing companies. The purpose of this research is to analyze the readiness level and feasibility of implementing Industry 4.0 technologies for SME’s in the federal state of Brandenburg (Germany). The work is based on the survey of 20 SME’s assessing their current problems emphasizing on automation, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), CAD/CAM, factory layout planning and logistics. Five SME’s from different domains out of the 20 surveyed are taken as case studies to evaluate the potential benefits, trade-offs and barriers from an implementation of these integrated technologies. The findings revealed that the companies are still coping with the issues relating to planning, logistics and automation. It was also found that all the concepts of i4.0 may not be necessary or even beneficial to an enterprise in the current scenario and new strategies need to be developed for its realization in SME’s. Abstract: Understanding how location-based services (LBS) can leverage sales in stores is important for retailers. LBS are a means to target users by making use of their location via GPS-enabled smartphones. Further, the ubiquitous nature of smartphones increases the importance of additional contextual factors such as time and weather. In particular, we analyze how context can be used to improve predicting responses to mobile promotions by applying unique GPS data. We examine the interplay between location, time, weather and co-location and users’ responses to mobile coupons. Our study reveals that context indeed improves predicting users’ responses to mobile promotions. First, distance is negatively correlated to users’ coupon choices. Second, users have different time-specific preferences. Third, temperature is negatively associated to users’ choices. Fourth, the number of co-located users is negatively related to their coupon response. Our results can be seen as input variables for retailers that aim to conduct mobile targeting. Collapse

Abstract: In academia, business process management (BPM) in general is a major topic in teaching and research for many universities worldwide with large research institutions and professorships centered on this topic. However, currently most educational programs on BPM only address actual process management capabilities and do not provide sufficient insight into different industrial sectors and their individual needs with regard to BPM. Banks for example have very specific requirements for BPM (e.g. compliance, risk management, industrialization etc.). As a result, we developed a specialization module combined with a project seminar on the topic of BPM in the financial sector for the Bachelor program in Information Systems at the University of Muenster, Germany. In this article, we argue for its necessity, present the intention behind it and its justification, as well as draft the actual course procedure, while also illuminating the results of our first evaluation of the 1-year Bachelor specialization module. With this paper, we aim at providing other lecturers with reasonable insights and our experiences in setting up a business sector oriented BPM specialization module. Collapse

Abstract: The work of this paper centres on a study of business organisations of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), whose continued existence after the reunification of Germany was accomplished by management buyout (MBO), rather than through acquisition by Western firms. The goal was to investigate the circumstances surrounding the sudden and total upgrade of information technology and systems enabled (and necessitated) by the end of Eastern Block isolation from the West. The paper reports on 1992 contacts and site visits with four MBO privatised firms and 1999 follow-up contacts and site visits with the two surviving firms of that group. Analyses are presented, which draw on literature devoted to IT transitions and IS implementation. The notion of technological switchback is introduced to characterise the unique circumstances embodied by the situation under study. It involves a necessary and sudden advance in information technological capabilities, which comes at the expense of a significant and undesirable regression in information system effectiveness. Parallels are drawn to the plights of firms in other transitional economies and firms facing emerging 'technological imperatives.' Conclusions are elucidated, regarding effective short- and long-term adjustment to such situations. Collapse
