Abstract: The adoption of augmented reality (AR) has been one of the defining technological trends of the past decade. While AR has experienced significant growth in consumer electronics, its potential for professional use still needs to be explored. Despite the growing interest in AR, determining its feasibility and potential to satisfy business needs remains challenging. To address this gap, we used a mixedmethod research approach to create a guiding framework called the process augmentability canvas. Drawing on a comprehensive case study of a major European maintenance, repair, and overhaul service provider, as well as state-of-the literature, we present a canvas that allows scholars and practitioners to evaluate AR's applicability for a given process thoroughly. By providing a structured approach to analyzing AR solutions, the process augmentability canvas contributes to a better understanding of how AR can be used efficiently in organizational settings. Abstract: Research in the “theory of the firm” tradition has often characterized firms as subeconomies, in which economic exchange is shaped by a central authority. We propose an expanded view of firms as subsocieties, in which authority is also responsible for establishing principles that shape cooperation among members. We draw on insights from political theory, sociology, and, to a lesser degree, legal theory to discuss how employees become members of subsocieties by exchanging rights, such as formal control over their work, for the benefits of membership. With this rights exchange, subsociety members develop expectations that those in positions of authority will use their control to define and sustain principles of justice and common purpose consistent with members’ moral sentiments. This view suggests expanded roles for authority and firm boundaries from what are incorporated into standard theories of the firm. These expanded roles have implications both for internal governance and for the boundary itself: When considering boundary changes, leaders must weigh both the economic and the social consequences of their decision. Abstract: We advance understandings of knowledge transfer by showing the central role of symbolic action, taking the form of ritual, in contexts characterized by worldview differences. Using qualitative data from interactions between farming communities in rural Ghana and agriculture development specialists, we examine how rituals do relational work that enables informational work. We find that rituals (i.e., visits, value affirmations, gift-giving, prayer, performing, storytelling) do so by means of their functions–bracketing worldview differences, modeling collaboration between farmers and agriculture development specialists, and packaging new knowledge in displays of compatibility. Our work also expands scholarship on the role of rituals in organizations and on management practices in Africa. Overall, our paper offers a complex, comprehensive view of knowledge transfer as involving both relational and informational work and relying on both symbolic action and tangible elements. Collapse

Abstract: Strategy scholars have long studied the strategic implications of firm-specific human capital but have almost completely ignored their conceptual dual: firm-specific worker incentives. This paper proposes that firm-level incentives can also vary in firm specificity, and accordingly, firm-specific incentives may help to explain advantages independent of the firm specificity of human capital. Results from a proprietary data set, including data from 284 software development firms and matched employee-level compensation data for 8,208 software developers in 99 of those firms, suggest that firms with higher firm specificity in their incentive bundles may have lower dysfunctional employee turnover rates as well as lower wage–tenure slopes. In other words, these firms may lose fewer employees who they would prefer to keep and may be able to do so while still offering lower wage increases over time than their competitors in the labor market. Thus, firm-specific incentives may provide a viable alternative pathway to human capital–based competitive advantages. Collapse

Abstract: Information technology (IT) enables access to up-to-date information and provides a basis for collective self-organizing and problem solving which are critical for addressing crises. However, less is known how specific and vulnerable groups of populations, such as older people, use IT for addressing and solving crisis. This paper investigate how older people adopt IT to become active in solving a political crisis in Belarus in late 2020, where the country has experienced peaceful mass protests, widespread violation of human rights, and repressions. Our findings highlight key processes underlying IT adoption and engagement in crisis solving by older person and illustrate that IT adoption and engagement in crisis management are interrelated. Abstract: As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds, governments across the globe are enforcing various Information Systems (IS)-based systems of control that, we contend, augur a new organisation of our freedoms, raising concerns related to issues of surveillance and control. Presented as ways to curb the immediate progression of the pandemic, these systems have progressively appertained our lives, thus becoming the new “normal”. Drawing from the concept of “control societies” developed by Deleuze, we explore how, through a logic of “the end justifies the means”, these new systems are being normalised. Beyond Deleuzian studies that describe modern society as a control society, we contend that Deleuze provides useful insights to critically analyse the progressive “normalization” of new forms of digitally enabled control, as well as the implications of this normalisation process. The analysis of this normalisation process highlights the ways in which the current pandemic and its response (i.e., new forms of technological control) are “sociomaterially constructed” through a historic, discursive, and material process. Contributing to MIS research on privacy and surveillance, this reflection on the sociomaterial construction of the control society and of its digitally enabled control systems during the current COVID-19 crisis paves the way to possible forms of resistance and solutions. Abstract: An important question that online companies face today is whether their customers will use personalization services at all, given the concerns of the buyer while buying different categories of products. In this study, we argue that buying specific product categories involve embarrassment and that such products are characterized by certain emotional distress that would impact the buying behavior of consumers. We also argue that content relevant personalization may not have the same impact while buying embarrassing products as against normal products. We followed a controlled lab experiment and tested our hypotheses by analyzing click stream data such as time taken, number of clicks, and number of products added to the cart. We found that online buyers resort to reduced time to shop as a coping strategy to deal with the distress of buying embarrassing products. Our results provide evidence for customers' preference to complete the online buying process with minimum time and activities when high embarrassment products were involved, despite the provisioning of personalization. In other words, users were more concerned about their embarrassment for category of products irrespective of whether the website contents are personalized or not. These research findings would help e-commerce service providers to fine tune their web personalization and recommendation strategies. Collapse

Abstract: Most explanations of status dynamics rely on market actor behavior or affiliation to other actors as the primary drivers of change. Yet status is increasingly mediated by third-party intermediaries, which impart status through their ordering of actors. Prior literature suggests that these rankers can affect status orders via changes in the underlying ranking methodology but offers little insight as to whether such changes reflect existing field beliefs or are self-interested. We advance a theory of ranker self-interest, whereby rankers adopt specific behavior to maintain audience attention and increase their chance for survival. We hypothesize that, by threatening audience attention, temporal stability in rankings (an endogenous property of many status systems) induces rankers to self-generate changes in the ranking. We examine the role of stability of rankings in promoting structural changes by rankers using Institutional Investor magazine’s All-America Research Team (all-stars), a widely studied and eminently impactful ranking of equity analysts. Abstract: The importance of dealing with fake news on social media has increased both in political and social contexts. While existing studies focus mainly on how to detect and label fake news, approaches to assist users in making their own assessments are largely missing. This article presents a study on how Twitter-users’ assessments can be supported by an indicator-based white-box approach. First, we gathered potential indicators for fake news that have proven to be promising in previous studies and that fit our idea of a white-box approach. Based on those indicators we then designed and implemented the browser-plugin TrusyTweet, which assists users on Twitter in assessing tweets by showing politically neutral and intuitive warnings without creating reactance. Finally, we suggest the findings of our evaluations with a total of 27 participants which lead to further design implications for approaches to assist users in dealing with fake news. Collapse

Abstract: Research on an Artificial Pancreas has gained its momentum and focused on the processing of clinical data for continuous insulin administration. However, the overall research is rather sketchy, fragmented and not very well coordinated. In this paper, we propose an architectural model for creating software intensive environments, which address deficiencies of current solutions for insulin infusion. A new way of defining which data should be collected and which types of computations should be performed with the data is important if we wish to come close to the functioning of a natural pancreas. An excerpt of the proposed software architecture has been deployed using Watson Analytics and performed upon a selection of data collected from sensors, individual patient’s input and persistent patient records.
